"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Duncan, thanks for posting that. Yes, it's good to be home and back here among friends. I do still have a long tough road ahead, but just being home helps a lot. Until my white blood cell count comes up, I'm very susceptible to viruses of all sorts. I have to wear a mask all the time and limit visits from people. It's a very crucial time for my recovery and have to check in at the hospital a couple times per week.
I just wanted to thank everyone for the kind thoughts and support. I received many emails, texts, and calls. You're all so great. :D
Brett, glad I could help in a small way. I didn't see the GAW, but that's a great cause.

Bob, it's so encouraging to see you posting here again!!:thumbup: Seems stupid, but when I saw your post, quotes from Carl the greenskeeper in Caddyshack sprang to mind: "It's a Cinderella story!" "Tears in my eyes, I guess."

With the precautions you have to take right now regarding infections, are new knives off-limits for awhile, too?:(

Continued prayers and best wishes as you continue down that "long tough road"; lots of folks here pulling hard for you, Bob!!:thumbup:

Thank you guys. Gary, I'm not really sure about new knives. I didn't exactly let on about our "problem". ;) There's no money for new knives anyways so I guess that's not much concern. But everything needs to be cleaned constantly.

Your new friends are purell and lysol eh Bob?

Good to hear from you, Bob!

I believe within a heartbeat that the time now is rather tough for you and your family.

But I hope and pray for a speedy recovery of you.

However - I hope you and your family will have a good Christmas time this year.

Thank you Andi. I'm not sure what Christmas will be like this year. It will depend on my progress. I may still be somewhat quarantined at that time.

Hi Bob! It's good to see you doing well. Stay clean and dream of the knives that'll be coming your way when you can handle those germy things again.

You're right Bob, money should be of no concern when it comes to knives when you've got me. PM me your name and United States Postal Service (USPS) address and I guarantee you'll have knives for Christmas.

And Bob, Please take care!!!!!

Well guys (& gals) - I made a decision.

I will leave this place.

I don´t know for how long, maybe I will return in a few weeks or months or whatsoever.

The reason is simple: This is not the place it has been some time ago. The more I read in the threads, the more I miss the discussion. It is all just "where to get ... where to buy ..." Where are the threads about handle materials and the pros and cons on steel alloys that went over pages, with knife makers included?! I know I wrote this several months ago, so I don´t want to bore you. But I just want you guys to think about ... we have threads about patterns for discussion - at least we had in the past. Why not reactivating them?

The other reason is the treatment in here. It was once a very polite place for great gentlemen and a generous place, indeed. It has lost its spirit. Everything has gone urgent in here and everyone is in a hurry. Not my place any longer. The rest were the negative comments on the Earls thread. It should have been a fun thread and nothing else. I have no need for excuses on having a family and a full time job and not the time any longer on doing knife pics every single day. I was really angry yesterday and I gave myself a night and day to think about and these are the consequences.

Maybe in some times I will be back again here. No offense on any person specially. I hope you can understand this.

I wish you guys, your families and friends all the best for the future. I hope we´ll see again here in some time. Maybe I will replie here on some comments. I will see.

You're right Andi. The discussion of covers, steel, liners, pins, frame styles, etc. is long gone and has been for some time. A group of Grabbers came in and turned the forum into just what you describe. Many of the old guys are gone and don't post here anymore.

I'm afraid I'm guilty of some of the things you describe. Sorry to see you go Andi. As far as I'm concerned, you're welcome back any time. Let me know where you'll be hanging out via PM or e-mail and I'll join you from time to time.

I certainly hope none of my post help bring about your decision Andi. I have only been here a few months but consider so many of you to be friends. I wish you and yours the very best and hope to see you back soon.

Andi, Take care! We, or least I, will miss you, but I understand. I hope the season will find you peace at home and a happy family. There is still a few of use that care more about those things. Again, take care and I hope you will at least drop by the Lounge once in a while. Oh, and have fun shooting with those who share those passions as well! Steven

Very sad Andi, hope you'll be back here one day. I put you something in the post a few days ago, so look out for it, and have a good Christmas.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over that Andi. I'm sure that Earl was happy to take a rest from the site seeing and endless posing for photos! I sent you a PM. Hope we'll see you around. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Perhaps it would be better to discuss comments in the Earl thread in the Earl thread itself, then, any posts of concern can be quoted there?

Andi, I hope you'll be back, and I hope you'll be still contactable, in case I have updates for you on my jagdnicker search.

Years ago, I knew a man who had a great interest in the Spanish Civil War. When he was young, he was lucky enough to be in a position to meet one of his heroes, a man called Miguel Garcia, who had spent 20 years in prison under Franco. Unfortunately, but somewhat typically, he got so drunk at the conference where Garcia was speaking that he behaved disgracefully and had to be carried out unconscious. As he was being carried out, Garcia, who was speaking at the time, dismissively remarked that he too had been like that when he was a young man. Having sobered up, the drunkard learned of the remark, and spent the rest of his life telling people that his hero, the great Miguel Garcia, had once likened him to himself. He took the comment to be a compliment! :D

Thanks Mark, but honestly, I'm really not doing all that well. I'm where I'm at now because my Dr gave me an estimate of 6-12 months. I'm not giving up that easy though.

Thanks for the offers fellas. I've been selling much of my collection because of money issues and just too much. With my health deteriorating I was trying to get down to a handful of knives. So I really wouldn't feel right accepting your generous offers. It's very heartwarming just knowing I have good friends here on the porch.

Sorry to hear that prognosis, Bob, but I'm not surprised to hear you're still fighting! I've always enjoyed your current avatar, but your sig quote often gives me food for thought too, especially now. I think of you as the gentleman in the quote, polite, good-natured, generous, kind, but armed and ready to fight if need be. I guess I'm only equipped to be a "prayer warrior", but that's my vow - every day, I will pray!
