"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

best of luck Andi and we'll still be here when you check back in.
hope you and the family have a happy and healthy holiday season and the best of luck in the upcoming year.

Andi, thanks for your open and honest comments. They are understandable. Please consider how valuable you are, appreciated and even necessary to this little corner of the inter-net. It needs people like you guiding it to remain (become or return to) a decent, enjoyable and informative location for others to visit. Your presence will be missed. Here's to hoping it won't be for long. Have a blessed holiday.

Decided to go Gold today. :D

I've really enjoyed my time here on the porch so far. So many of you have been very welcoming and incredibly helpful. Thank you all for that!

Sorry to hear that prognosis, Bob, but I'm not surprised to hear you're still fighting! I've always enjoyed your current avatar, but your sig quote often gives me food for thought too, especially now. I think of you as the gentleman in the quote, polite, good-natured, generous, kind, but armed and ready to fight if need be. I guess I'm only equipped to be a "prayer warrior", but that's my vow - every day, I will pray!

Thank you for the kind words Gary.

Andi, no matter what you decide or for how long that decision stands, my good wishes go with you.

Bob, Keep up the good fight. We're with you.

You're right Andi. The discussion of covers, steel, liners, pins, frame styles, etc. is long gone and has been for some time. A group of Grabbers came in and turned the forum into just what you describe. Many of the old guys are gone and don't post here anymore.

I'm afraid I'm guilty of some of the things you describe. Sorry to see you go Andi. As far as I'm concerned, you're welcome back any time. Let me know where you'll be hanging out via PM or e-mail and I'll join you from time to time.

Andi my friend, have your break and c'mon back here buddy, I think you are just a fantastic guy - always have and consider you a friend I just havent met yet.

Ted, I always like reading your posts, but this one I am a bit peeved about, the forums isnt the place you have just limelighted it as with the Bold highlighted quote.

In stating that - you have pretty much generalized all the good people in the Forums who are such fantastic people in with a probably just a few people who will always be takers - like anywhere else.

The fantastically generous people in " the place that it is now" do lots of work to raise money, do any other person favours at a drop of a hat , and are exceedingly generous with giveaways etc -

You may have seen people come and go - I too miss quite a few people who used to hang out here - but I still think its THE best place here on the porch..

Andi- Nothing wrong with taking a step back to spend more time with the family, this forum is voluntary, after all. I"m just sorry you feel you've had a negative experience. I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season.

Ed- Personally, I'm a bit confused, as I see a lot of discussions of covers, steel, liners, pins, frame styles, and history. I suppose a hobby that involves collecting and collectors can lean toward the acquisitive, but I skip over threads that don't interest me.

And Bob. I don't know what to say. Keep up the good fight.

Well guys (& gals) - I made a decision.

I will leave this place.

I don´t know for how long, maybe I will return in a few weeks or months or whatsoever.

The reason is simple: This is not the place it has been some time ago. The more I read in the threads, the more I miss the discussion. It is all just "where to get ... where to buy ..." Where are the threads about handle materials and the pros and cons on steel alloys that went over pages, with knife makers included?! I know I wrote this several months ago, so I don´t want to bore you. But I just want you guys to think about ... we have threads about patterns for discussion - at least we had in the past. Why not reactivating them?

The other reason is the treatment in here. It was once a very polite place for great gentlemen and a generous place, indeed. It has lost its spirit. Everything has gone urgent in here and everyone is in a hurry. Not my place any longer. The rest were the negative comments on the Earls thread. It should have been a fun thread and nothing else. I have no need for excuses on having a family and a full time job and not the time any longer on doing knife pics every single day. I was really angry yesterday and I gave myself a night and day to think about and these are the consequences.

Maybe in some times I will be back again here. No offense on any person specially. I hope you can understand this.

I wish you guys, your families and friends all the best for the future. I hope we´ll see again here in some time. Maybe I will replie here on some comments. I will see.

Good luck to you, Andi. I completely understand how you feel and I began traveling down that path myself quite some time ago as you can see from my lack of activity.

(There was a time I could never have foreseen it.)

If I can be of service or assistance drop me an email or PM.

Andi, I hope that you are not gone for long. I know I blather on, a problem I've had for years. I hope I didn't encourage your decision to unplug for a while. You're a valuable member of this community, and will be missed. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year sir.

Andi, I checked in today and saw your post. I have had similar feelings, hence my lack of participating much for quite some time now. I think of you often, my friend, and wish you the very best wherever you may be. Wishing you and Sandra and little Max a very Happy Holiday season!

Sorry to see you go Andi, but I understand completely. Family life is busy life.
I never have made myself too familiar here with people due my "wandering" nature but you always have stood out as gent like many people here at the traditional section.
Best to you!

good to see you around -- hope life is treating you and yours well.

Been contemplating the post here from the last couple of days and it has made me reevaluate why I participate in this sub forum we like to call the porch. I have been lurking here for about two years and have been a member for seven months so I guess you could consider me somewhat of a newbie. As I read where sadly we are losing one of our old and faithful members and the reasoning behind the decision I began to think about not only the reason I am here but also how I participate in this little section of the internet. I am retired and disabled therefore I spend a lot of my time alone and this forum has given me a place to go and interact with others that have some of the same interest as myself. For me it is a happy place that I can pull up a chair and not only talk to folks but make new friends as well. So far I've met some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to get acquainted with and also gained some most valuable knowledge of knives I've ever been exposed to. I do realize that in my excitement I've have posted some pretty lame stuff and by doing so probably caused a few eyes to roll and for that I apologize. I have also tried to be a good citizen of this community by purchasing a gold membership so to support this site financially. I have also hosted a few GAWs and gifted a few knives for no other reason than to put a smile on the faces of some of the members here. I have also tried to encourage members newer than myself and to support and and respect those that have been here longer and have much more knowledge than myself. I have found that this is a common behavior of those members that hang out here on the porch and I am learning from all of you not only more about knives but my behavior here from the great compassion and etiquette found here. To sum up I am so glad to have found this site and would just like to thank all of you for your welcome attitude toward newer members such as myself.

Randy, you have certainly been a welcome addition here and I for one have enjoyed your contributions. Andi is a fine fellow and has always been a joy to chat with and to read his fascinating posts. I am sorry to be losing that but I understand his reasons for it and wish him well.

Geeez Andi.
what did EARL do to you?:D
No worries mein Freund -I still think the photo of EARL in max s little hand is the best of the whole lot. That includes the picture of EARL being attacked by the giant stinging ant taken by me.
All the Best and see what the new year brings hoping it will be good for all.
