"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, or necro post.
At an old Sinclair gas station turned antique gallery in town, I found a pretty cool Primble case. One knife inside, nothing of interest to me. But the case was neat, and the store wasnt a run of the mill antique selection.

Also, I'm looking to create a small, pocket sized guide for all the flea market and secondhand shop trawlers among us. I figured a 3" x 5" set of cards with various manufacturers tang stamps, their dates, brand names that a manufacturer made (so you know who made what for various hardware companies, allowing you to buy a good knife cheaper), and maybe some other stuff. Any ideas or additions would be welcome! I'm looking to make a few sets and to upload the files here so others can print off and laminate their own set.

Goins' Encyclopedia is 311 pages and even it is incomplete. If you have a narrow focus of a few brands, flash cards might be helpful. My advice is to study lots of good examples of old knives so you know what they look like and to buy/read lots of books. Goins' Encyclopedia and Levine's Guide would be a good start for a library. Folks used to walk around with copies of the books at knife shows. Now days people seem to be allergic to books. I don't know if there are digital copies available yet but that might be worth looking into. You could keep a digital copy on your phone. There's lots of misinformation on the web and there are lots of fakes and reworked knives. So studying lots of good examples is also important.

That is true. I was hoping just covering the major brands would be enough. I can't carry a book comfortably while riding my bike around on my laid back Sunday explorations, but a cell phone PDF would be quite good. I'll look into that. Thanks Jake!

Your idea reminds me, I've been meaning to move some tang stamp images from my computer to my phone. If you Google "tang stamp chart" Images there are a lot of useful results. Of course, tang stamps alone don't tell you everything, but they are a good start.

My older brother passed away on 3-23-2016 from blood clots in the lung.
He was 56 years old, I'm sure going to miss him a lot.

He loved working with horses, he could work with horses that were very wild, and other fairer's said needed to be put down.

When we were young kids, we did everything together, if you seen one of us, the other was close by.
I've lost two brothers and two sisters now. My mom is 90 years old and is having cope with the lose of another child.
There are seven of us kids still living, 3 boys and 4 girls.

Life is short folks, enjoy everyone around you while you can.
