"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hope you had a great time Paul. You should find a parcel waiting for you ;)

Thanks Jack, one of our kindly neighbours has been taking in our post so I won't collect it until tomoorow. It was lovely. I was very impressed with our wee Rory, he held up bravely. :)

Today's adventure. Early morning hike on the High Bridge Trail across the Appomattox River. A 31 mile Rails-to-Trails project.

It was early enough (see the shadow) that I had the place to myself. The aerial photo is from Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation. The rest are from this morning.

I wasn't sure when you were back Paul, but thought you would have made arrangments :) Good old Rory, all that sunshine must have come as quite a shock to him :)

Christian and Phil you both have beautiful children. My baby girl will be 33 this year and my oldest 42 time sure does fly.

Just like to let y'all know that I got my promotion and to celebrate after a couple drinks I got a tc ancient Barlow Sheepfoot off the exchange

I didn't want to start another thread but wanted to share a quick notion;

While we were away on our holibags I didn't take any of my favourite knives with me for fear of having them nabbed by either baggage handlers or light fingered peeps in general so all I took was an SAK that I have carried with me on travels for a number of years. It has a good selection of tools and works well. I believe its called a voyager but have never bothered to look it up as I rarely carry it.

The clock long since ceased to function but everything else is just grand. However, being on a very hot beach type holiday - I've not been on the like since I was a wain - I fount that carrying a big hefty three layered Victorinox didn't really work when one is wearing just boardies. It's uncomfortable and you wind up very lop-sided and risk flashing the poor beach goers a bum cheek so I went in search of something that can be found and bought easily all across Europe.

In this case - because I wanted a small one I went for a no5. They are superb.

It has been a while since I carried an opinel and I had forgotten how light and simple they are. They are sharp from the word go and they stay sharp for a long time too. The blade was roughly the same size as my vic too. Winner.

cheers,

Paul

:)

Tyler,
congratulations! :)

Paul,
I found myself in a very similar situation two months ago (trip to hot weather, need to carry a lightweight knife with shorts and such...) but I ended up with something different. Just like you, I brought a three layer SAK with me (a Climber) but almost never carried it. Instead, an alox Bantam allowed me to carry a blade (and the always useful combo tool) with very little weight and bulk, even in shorts and such.

Congrats Tyler!

I have applied for a job at the big orange box to supplement the lack of income from the golf course with this winter weather, and should I get it, I'll be buying myself a new Mora "electricians" knife. The HighQ Robust series. I'm also gonna buy some leather and misc. supplies to make some prizes for my past 1000 post giveaway. Maybe I'll make some neat tools, or make some wallet sized sharpening solutions.
Have a week everyone, make it what you want it to be!

Connor

That look's like a very good start to one's day. I need to do that more often myself.

That minds me that last week I was working with a young engineer who normally works in Prestwick, but was in San Diego to work a project for a couple of weeks. Last Friday I asked his plans for the weekend and he said he planned to lie out by the hotel pool all weekend. I mentioned sunscreen and he said he always used what he liked to term "Scottish strength" sun screen (spf 50).

I said all that to say, I trust you and yours used plenty of "Scottish Strength" sun screen.

Yes we did thanks Frank, Claire and Rory especially. They're both proper Celts - pale skin and ginger hair, so they have to paint the stuff on!

Merle Haggard passed away today. His son has been posting a lot of pictures of him in hospice, with a guitar. I think he had the flu? Anyway, RIP.

A real shame :(

I got to see him live in concert 2 years ago, front row center seats for the wife and I, one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

I will soon be doing a car rally that is "across the pond" and I'd like to take a pocket knife. The route is Dublin, Edinburg, London, Europa-Park, Prague, Budapest, and ending in Bucharest. Does anyone have a clue as to what I should take or not legally? I have an #18, #25, and several other GEC patterns that are sub 3 inches. I'm not opposed to carrying a SAK Pioneer or model above.

I will - most likely - be stopped by the police and possibly handcuffed a few times until they get their euros. I may go to the PD once or twice.

It's hard for me to imagine to not have a pocket knife on me anymore. I need some help. JIC, I want to carry whatever pocket knife in my pocket for the whole rally.

Thanks for your input members.

Regards ~Todd

In the UK it must be non-locking and have a sub 3 inch blade. I think you'll be ok with that in Europe too as long as you're not in Belgium where they won't tolerate anything unless it's for a specific justifiable reason. Some European countries can be funny about one hand opening blades too.

Best I can do I'm afraid...

Paul
