"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

In the UK it must be non-locking and have a sub 3 inch blade. I think you'll be ok with that in Europe too as long as you're not in Belgium where they won't tolerate anything unless it's for a specific justifiable reason. Some European countries can be funny about one hand opening blades too.

Best I can do I'm afraid...

Paul

You must have a reason for a knife.

"To cut things."

Problem solved.

:)

That is a huge step forward and thank you, for your response. We will not be in Belgium at all and considering recent events - I'm OK with that. I can only imagine how strict Belgium is right now.

JIC, anyone doesn't see my earlier post, my route is: Dublin, Edinburg, London, Europa-Park, Prague, Budapest, and ending in Bucharest. Any advice about a carrying a sub 3 inch pocket knife ("traditional") on that route in my pocket at all times is greatly appreciated.

I'm down to picking a #15S115, #252115, or an #180116.

Since you won't be travelling to southern Europe (bad choice by the way :p), I can't addmuch to what Paul said. Yet...
Unless you really get out of the way using your knife or acting irresponsably, the likeliness of being searched by the local police (unless in airports and such) is lower than finding a 100 euro (or pound) bill on the sidewalk.
A SAK or GEC #25 will not scare anyone nor trigger negative reactions.
Bring a knife that is UK legal and enjoy your trip :)

I will soon be doing a car rally that is "across the pond" and I'd like to take a pocket knife. The route is Dublin, Edinburg, London, Europa-Park, Prague, Budapest, and ending in Bucharest. Does anyone have a clue as to what I should take or not legally? I have an #18, #25, and several other GEC patterns that are sub 3 inches. I'm not opposed to carrying a SAK Pioneer or model above.

I will - most likely - be stopped by the police and possibly handcuffed a few times until they get their euros. I may go to the PD once or twice.

It's hard for me to imagine to not have a pocket knife on me anymore. I need some help. JIC, I want to carry whatever pocket knife in my pocket for the whole rally.

Thanks for your input members.

Regards ~Todd

Todd, the rally sounds great. What a terrific set of memories you'll be creating this summer. Congratulations on the trip and have a fantastic time.

If it were me I'd take a Victorinox. They're well recognized and regarded throughout Europe, it's an excuse to get a new knife, and the Alox versions are elegant. The Pioneer X is a new SAK model for 2016. It has already been released in Europe and will be released here on May 15. It's 93 mm of pure Alox goodness with the addition of a pair of scissors. The first scissors to be put on that size frame! When you think about it, nothing says "rally" like a good pair of scissors! Plus, if you buy it there, you'd have a useful tool as well as a memento of the rally

Sounds like a great trip Todd. If you fancy breaking your trip between Edinburgh and London, and spending a day in Sheffield, let me know, I'd be happy to show you around over there

I live in a pretty rural area, between two urban centers. A half hour to the north of me, York Pennsylvania. Forty five minutes to the south of me, Baltimore. Drugs have always been in the area, but meth and heroin are sticking their claws in. When I was a kid, adults told us not to trespass on others property, not only because we just shouldn't do that, but there were marijuana growers in the area (right across the street from my parents house, heck, his new neighbor is former special forces and DEA still flies over his house every year, those owners are gone since the early 80s). I haven't heard of any meth labs in the area, but who knows.

Last night, five minutes from my house, there was a shooting in the local Walmart. A guy came in with a shotgun and robbed the pharmacy, shot at a state trooper on the way out and was shot in the chest. I used to work at this Walmart, and the hardest working woman I know, or one of them anyway, works at this pharmacy. Lot of good people up there.

I know that this stuff is out there, just not good when it hits close to home or those you know.

Honestly I think you'd be fine with any of those but pick the 25. Just because.

:)

I'm taking it, per your advice and thank you, for your time, once again.

Thank you, sir, for your time. I'm taking one of each. :)

Exactly! I need some cool stories to go with my knives. It's a golden opportunity to make some. Thank you for your time as well. :)

I was thinking the same thing, but to just make it on time to each place is a task. Moreover, I truly enjoy getting the "first parking place" and placating their egos. That isn't to mean, mine won't be put in its place. Hahaa. :D It's all good fun until the drinks start pouring and then the "tales" take over. We'll be in London for the Banker's Holiday. Thank you, Jack.

Thanks for the time members. I feel much better about it now. I am going to take what's advised. A #253115 and a new SAK Pioneer. Maybe I can get a Pioneer X when I arrive in Dublin.

Everyone have a great weekend. Thanks so much for your time.

Todd to me that sounds like the trip of a lifetime.:cool: Be safe and have a fantastic time. Like others I believe I'd would purchase a new SAK and Opinel when I got there but don't you just hate to have to buy new knives. :D

It should be one heck of a rally. This will be my 11th Gumball.

The horror of having to procure a knife rather than being one. I hope I can manage. ;^)

I am a modern day cannonballer.

A quick deviation from the prep for HST's advice for his pretty cool rally (pics PLEASE).

I was at an antiques store this week on my birthday, as I was told that the owner, who is interested in knives, would be there. He was not, as he is fighting cancer, but that didn't stop me from enjoying an hour long conversation with the vendor working the store.
The store is made up of several vendors with their own offerings who run the store different days, but all of their items are for sale and in the store together.

We first talked about antique stores vs ebay, as her son is a wiz who makes incredible returns on investment by selling things on the bay. What we came to agree on is that ebay is convenient but lacks all the fun and character of a brick and mortar store, there is no hunt or digging through musty boxes, only punching keys. You place your trust in a seller or buyer based on a calculated percentage of feedback that's pretty easy for them to manipulate, instead of a handshake and seeing how they carry themselves. You don't make friends on ebay, you don't see new things you weren't looking for, you just look at the same item until you find a condition and price you like.

The ebay seller, such as her son, doesn't have fun in learning about things and knowing the reason they are sought after. An ebay ace only sees what prices things go for on ebay, and memorizes them in case they spot a profitable purchase. The antique seller knows the history and application of what they enjoy buying, collecting, and selling. They don't memorize prices; they learn about what constitutes a quality piece, who the more skilled craftsmen and artisians are, what techniques were used in the time period to spot counterfeits.
Antique stores provide a place to put your passion and heart into and put on display, and welcome others to enjoy it.

This is the first half of my story, however I would like to take a break and let this post simmer for a while before I write up the other, directly knife related post.

What is Europa-Park???

Sitting around the fire pit tonight, drinking beer and relaxing. My kind of Saturday night :D (and the kind of Saturday night I need after the week I had at work). The first three days of next week don't look too promising either, but on Thursday the wife and I are flying home to Arkansas so the family can throw her a baby shower. Definitely looking forward to that! (The time home, that is, not the baby shower. I'll be far away from that, shooting sporting clays, most likely.)

That's right customers.
Is there anything more annoying?
That high pitched whining noise that gets on everyones nerves.
It does your head in -I know it does mine.
Well lately I have been moaning and groaning ad nauseum about missing out on my precious(snakewood 47 Viper).
There was also a second wave of negativity about not being able to get what I want when I want it (Texas Camp Knife #98)
Something akin to Veruca Salt out of Willy Wonka.
This outpouring of righteous indignation left me feeling a bit tired and grumpy.
I might add slightly ashamed but I won't because I'm way too arrogant and egotistical to admit my faults.
So there I was sinking further and further into the doldrums -muttering to myself at the shops and in the car about why cant I have a nice knife shop to visit ?/stupid internet/stupid GEC . And generally carrying on like a spoilt zit faced teenager whose Mum just made him take the rubbish out (the only thing wrong with that is that I'm 51yo).
Now go forward to the porch and imagine a squeaking, creaking floorboard that groans everytime someone moves or the wind causes the the old house to shift slightly. It's warped,it's sticking up and stubbing toes.
How long before someone on the porch nails that sucker down ,sands it smooth and gives it a coat of exterior urethane to protect ,preserve and beautify?
Not long (cue quiz show host entrance fanfare)
BECAUSE- Its A New Deallll.
So I'm trading a TC barlow for the precious with one of our members-to be honest I'm wary but let that not reflect on anything other than my own cynicism and paranoia.I have a good feeling.
Then came the clincher ,the icing on the cake if you will that seemed fortuitous.
Our good mate Waynorth contacted me with a generous offer that he will secure for me a #98 TCK at the show he is attending this week.Once again above and beyond the call of duty and glowing with porchlight.
The TC barlow is going but the hand of Charlie is on the incoming Texas 98 and the precious is incoming despite me resigning it to the garden of broken dreams.
I tell ya -If I was a moth I'd fly straight up to the Porch bug zapper and get frizzled, drop to the floor and find a knothole in that old floorboard to rest in until the dude with the Gerni gets on there and hoses me away.
Cheers.

Sounds like things are working out for you, meako! Congrats on the deals to get the snakewood Viper and the steroidal camp knife!!:D

(It also sounds as if we may be long lost brothers!

I seldom bring this attitude to the knife corner of my existence, but I sure get grumpily indignant about other aspects of life, and "arrogant" and "egotistical" are my wife's pet names for me! :o)

ooo i once got an infraction for complaining that someone beat to the 2014 bladeforums knife like 2-4 times in a row, within a few weeks. same person! i was complaining to myself cause i missed the tc clip red soup bone barlow the other day, seller posted it at midnight and I have bed time for work :(. these things come and go! missed a 48 big clip a while ago too. but the 2014 blade forums knife was one I openly griped about. Glad it all worked out for ya!

I'm right there with you, meako. I have found myself getting grumpy and indignant on a couple of occasions. Once in a while I have to step away for a while, not buy any new knives, and turn my attention on appreciating the beauties that I already own. It's really easy to get caught up in the next thing and forget about how blessed we all are to already posses some fantastic pieces. It also helps to remember that this is a long term hobby. There's no urgency to pick up a specific knife right now, and there's nothing coming out right now that won't come up again some time down the line.

Kudos to you for turning it around. You're passionate about knives, which is something most here can probably empathize with. As with any passion, it can get on top of you and get you into trouble if you aren't careful. We all take our lumps. As Henry Hill said "Everybody takes a beating sometime." I really respect you coming on and admitting your faults. That's what differentiates a man from a spoilt zit faced teenager.
