"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Now that so many folks have the time on their smartphones, it's like we've gone back to the days of pulling out a pocket watch to check the time. It seems less rude to surreptitiously glance at a wristwatch. ;)

It IS less rude to glance at a watch than to pull out the phone. Plus, waking up your phone just to check the time needlessly drains precious battery power. Not to mention the more times you pull out your phone the more chances clumsy fingers have to send that stupidly expensive device flying towards the earth and an early death...lol.

I got so frustrated with my wretched phone a few weeks ago I bounced it off the wall a couple of times! :o Still haven't managed to kill the darn thing yet though :grumpy: ;)

Lol...I've actually grown quite fond of my new smartphone. I like the increased capability it offers. But I'm still not attached to it as many folks I see. I can't believe the number of folks that can't be bothered to put down their phone for a bit so that they can actually see where they are walking.

I just wish the infernal things weren't so big. There are some who prefer to carry peanuts because of their small size. My knife is not the problem here. Even my #73 is easy to carry, compared to my phone which almost requires a dedicated pocket!

Fancy!! MOTM? or FOIS?
HUH????

If you're referring to the Speedmaster, it's a pre-moon. 1967.

I use my phone now as I've gotten out of the habit of wearing a watch. The watch I do have is a Swatch It keeps time very well. I check it every few months and it's still on time. I must be a watch hermit.

My ex boss has an Omega megabuck. It requires periodic servicing which involves sending it away and more cost than most of the casio watches I have ever owned put together. That to me is a ripoff. You pay big money for something that is meant to be quality and reliable yet reqiures constant regular outlay to maintain. Long story short- this ancient rhyme attributed Meakodotus c 435BC
pretty much sums it up-
"When the sun shines high,Lunch is nigh.
If its starry and black,Hit the sack."

I'm with meako on this watch issue. I've worn a wristwatch every day for at least 40 years, and probably the last 36 of those years I've worn a series of 3 Casio digital watches that cost me a total of less than $36. They've kept time accurately enough for me to function in modern society, and I've never had to reset the time (except for the semiannual daylight savings switch that I must do manually). My time-telling needs are met more than satisfactorily for a buck per year! But I'm also a guy who likes "econobox" cars, clothes from Goodwill, store-brand foods, and Rough Riders. My wife is the one who has more refined tastes in our family! :D

Problem is that you can now get accurate time quite anywhere, even in the middle of Sahara. Watches, and knives as well, sometime, are not just a tool, but a jewel. Some do like towear big rings, huge neklace, other just carry a watch and a knife. A traditional watch and a traditional knife. Call it simply class! :D

Wise words!

Pocket-watches look nice, have a fascination and aura but I've never viewed them as anything else than quaint museum pieces, practical they're not, and they can get damaged or contaminated rather easily.

I dunno. For the last 20 years or so, I've used a manual wind Hamilton pocket watch my parents gave me in the early 70's. I carry it every day. Got it serviced once, about two years ago. Seems to hold up well enough.

I own about a dozen and a half pocket watches. My first was my great grandfather's full plate Elgin 18S from 1898.

Managed to get logged in again. I've had to read through quite a lot to get caught up, Im glad I wasn't the only one struggling to get into the forum.

Jack, sorry to see you were poorly, but glad to see you still posting :)

Thanks a lot Paul, hopefully I'm on the mend, for now at least. Hope you had a god visit with your family

It was lovely thanks, Jack. My grandmother is 95 now, it was lovely to see her and introduce her to her great grandson in the north. She is also a redhead like Claire and Rory. I once overheard a couple of old dears talking to each other in the lounge of her home; "see that Stella, that's her real hair y'know!"

That's a great pic Paul, and I'm glad that your grandmother is doing well :)
