"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I grew up in the Delta of Eastern Arkansas , My Grandpa Simons gave me my first Imperial Jack Knife when I was 5 and I never spend more than 3 days without one since.

I have a Submariner I received as a retirement gift from the company I worked for I never wear. As a matter of fact when I first got it I wore it all the time and the doggone thing would loose about a minute or so every few days so by the time I would think to check, it would be a few minutes behind and that drove me crazy. I keep it because of the sentimental value and also because my son has claimed it as soon as I'm gone. I wear an Invicta that looks almost exactly like it my wife bought for my birthday a few years back and it does the same thing. Now my go to time piece for accurate time is my cell phone cracked screen and all but It was free when I renewed my contract. :D

My son and GF steal my Rolex(s) all the time and they have claimed them as theirs. My biggest complaint is that Rolex watches keep time so poorly. Even the new improved movements are not much of an improvement. Luckily there's a master of their movements locally, so getting them adjusted is only $100 or so with pressure testing. FTR, all my 'expensive' keep poor time as well. I'm enjoying the reliability of winding watches lately. I prefer them now. Something about winding your watch that it creates a zen feeling.

Hi folks, hope everyone is well and having a good weekend. Many thanks for all the well wishes and advice, all greatly appreciated, I just didn't want anyone to be too worried about me :) I've had back problems 40 years, but this sciatica is a first, and dragging on longer than I'd anticipated. Painful to sit at my computer chair, so I may be away a few more days yet. Miss y'all :)

Jack

Feel better, Jack.

I'm leaving the 25th for Dublin. I'm starting to get anxious. I wanted to leave early, but my puppy is at full attention, and I couldn't be away from him for more than 2 weeks.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

HST, get yourself a Citizen Eco-Drive (solar charged battery) and never look back. They're only around $150, keep perfect time, and never need winding or battery replacement. I've got three and the wife has about 4 or 5, we love 'em. Here is my two-toned one I wear daily.

Jeff is right. The Citizen Eco-Drive is an excellent watch.

The watch I wear the most is a Seiko Kinetic

Sometimes I wear one of these two Seiko Solar watches, They work under the same principle as Jeff's watches.

I had a Rolex years ago but it didn't keep very good time.

I must say its a brave "hacker" who attacks a knife forum website. Or to put it another less diplomatic way "an annoying jerk".
Glad we're back on track.
Jack-have you tried those ergonomic kneeling chairs for the PC?
meant to be more beneficial.
Chiropractor ? get one who does soft tissue work before any cracking. Worked wonders for me a few years ago.
cheers

So just a quick update. Father had his check up with his doctor. His blood sugar is really high so they putting him on insulin and he has an appointment with the specialist in March 3rd.

So its wait and see I suppose.

so, i have to beg forgiveness from youz guys
its been too long since i logged back on and never gave a final update

my father had his surgery and it was a complete success. he is cleared for exercise and all that again. It was very stressful and i was a nervous wreck but the surgery was good, follow up was good. Small complication, have come up ...but nothing nearly so serious (apparently surgery and insulin and anti-biotics play havoc on ones internal plumbing, but he still doing follow ups with his specialist on that front.

But it occurred to me this morning as i was driving to work that i never came back and gave yall an update about how the situation played out.

So my sincerest thanks for all the prayers, well wishes and smoke yall sent my way.
Thanks again guys

Ryan

I will third the Citizen eco drive. I have one with a titanium band and case that I can barely tell is there. I have another my parents gave me in 2002 and is on the original battery. I just have to leave it in a window sill for an afternoon and it will start ticking again.

This is great news. I'm very happy to hear of your father's improved health. Cheers!

Ryan,
I'm glad to hear your father is fine. Yes we all have to suffer when we face troubles (and health is a serious thing), but it's all good once you get over it.
As for watches, Citizen EcoDrive are very good watches and are not expensive at all. Anyway, just like knives, it's a matter of use, taste, style, and so on...

Until the capacitor goes bad, which it will sooner or later.

If you never want to look back, get a mechanical (handwind or automatic). Many will last generations. The Seikos with the 7s26 automatic movement are practically bomb proof.

pretty much, in the collectors world seiko skx 007s and family have been known to go over 15 years without servicing!

Thanks once again for all the well wishes and advice, I really appreciate everyone's kindness :) I have less pain this afternoon than yesterday, so I'm hoping that it is beginning to ease :)

I was very impressed with the Eco-Drive, and bought them for all my family, figured they'd last forver. After about 7 years, mine stopped working, and so have the others since :( You can get the capacitor changed, but it's not far off the cost of a new watch. When I was looking for a replacement as a day to day watch, I had a look in the gadgets and gear subforum here, and then on various watch-geek forums. The Orient Mako automatic watches were very highly reccomended, and I've been very pleased with mine. Orient are owned by Seiko, but still make their own movements

I still have my grandad's old gold Smiths (like the one Hilary took up Everest), and it works flawlessly. My Cartier Tank on the other hand has stopped working for the second time (and the cost of getting that fixed will be the price of several Makos :()!

So keeping time like a Rolex is a bad thing? :D

I got a great deal on a Seiko Black Monster on closeout from a reputable watch company, but I have to send it in to get recalibrated. A guy that sells knives and repairs watches explained the process to me at a local knife show. My BS meter started tingling, but after stopping at the watch counter in the mall, they told me the same thing. The watch runs a little fast sometimes, a little slow others. I dropped it on the ground, just grass, but I guess the jolt knocked it around a bit.

Glad to hear you are starting to feel better Jack. Let's hope you are on the mend.

All this watch talk got me thinking. I like wristwatches (don't understand how people can just be satisfied with their phone as a timepiece) I've never spent a lot on watches though (would not be hard given the beautiful models out there) but no other marque has performed as well for me as a Seiko. I have a now unfashionable ultra thin quartz of theirs from 1979, it keeps wonderful time, has had loads of straps and batteries of course, maybe a new glass too but no 'servicing' just a fantastic piece of quality. I also have a kinetic from 2001 that has required nothing, no capacitor, that too is bang on accurate (bit heavy on the wrist with those magnets though..) Japanese quality at its very best, like their cars (the ones made in Japan mind, not the Euro or US variants...:D ) I bought a Tissot a few years back that cost more than Seikos but although looking very nice it loses time and that is poor. My late father's Swiss Roamer mechanical is 45 years old and keeps decent time - if you remember to wind it :D- and that too has had no attention or cleaning, I actually suspect the less a watch is tampered with - sorry, serviced - the better it is for it;)

That's just like saying the less you change the oil in an automobile, the better it is for it. The lube in a mechanical watch movement gets junked up too thus mechanical watches need to be serviced (cleaned and lubed) too. Every 5 to 7 years is best.
