"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Very good day today. This was my first outing on the Norton for a year, that is since I crashed. I had two good folks in mind, Bob and Barrett.
Bob, I hope you're doing well and this outing was dedicated to you!
Barrett, I was more than surrpised and happy when I found a yellow enveloppe from Arizona! I just can thank you. The knife and the little goodies beside are FAN-TAS-TIC! The chestnut bone is very similar to harvest orange bone and I do love it (curiously the picture has a reddish rendition!)!
Sunday I hit the road for good!

Jolipapa, I'm amazed that the package made it to you so quickly! I put it in the mail last Thursday and was wondering how long it would take. I'd say a week from Phoenix to Paris is pretty good time (especially via regular First Class Mail). Glad it made it there safely, and I'm glad you like it! :D

Good looking bike, by the way! I love that style.

btb01 I was nicely surprised too, i did not expect it so quickly! Maybe USPS received new planes and la Poste some new trucks! :D
This will be my first cv Case ever. I already found that the mini is much more handy than the regular trapper. Next week I will field test it beside her mini wharnie cousin (stainless).
I must add that both came through generosity of the porch members! :) This is really a special place!

Bob I hope you soon will be able to ride on your hog!

lol Great pic jolipapa!

Bob - you Dark horse you.... now that Bike is awesome! I have painted MANY - a Harley Tanks!!!

I was just looking through some photo's, heres the last Harley Twin Tank Paint Job I did...

I stripped the two Tanks down to Metal, did the usual treatment of the metal, Etch Primed and Primed etc..
Based the Tanks with a Xirallic Blue Pearl in a Deep Black - so when the light hits it, the Curve of the tanks highlight in a awesome coarse Blue sparkle pearl - but only the Highlight of the curve! You can just see it start to catch the light at the bottom of the tanks in this photo below....
The Tanks painted Black with Xirallic Blue Pearl...

I then flatted that down with 800, and masked out the Flames ( you can see my rough plans with China-graph pencil - I then make my mind up as I mask with 3mm what the final curves will shape up to be like........, I then Sprayed the Flames with a Cleaner Metallic Blue - also Highlighted the inside Curves of the Flames with a ghosting of White - Then three coats of a violet candy sprayed over the flames then Cleared.... This made the white inside Curves pop - and in the proper light just blew people away........

I then Re-sanded the Clear with 800 and then pin-stripped the Flames, Shadowed where the Flames sat over each other and then Re- Cleared, Whew, I can tell you by the rtime thats all over I dont want to see another Tank for a year or so lol
The more I flow-coat the Tanks with sanding in between, The more lines I loose and the tanks become like Glass.

Haha why thank you Jack kind Sir, I find Tanks very cool to do, but man they take a LOT of hours, I always am excited to start them , and glad to see them go once done lol.

I imagine they take a great deal of sustained concentration Duncan. Well done my friend :)

My friend if I was closer I would gladly do that for you !
Is that Brazing to fix a crack in the seam? ( Bottom Left )

I too wish you were closer Duncan. I'd love to bring new life to my bike. Very nice work my friend.
I'll have to try to find some old pics, but back in my much younger (very younger ;)) days, I used to ice race motorcycles as well. Crazy sport. :D

I wish you were closer too Duncan - no bike, but we could go to the pub! :D

Seems we have quite the craftsmen here, from pocket knives to Harley tanks to Rolls Royce hood ornaments.
This budding craftsman is working on rehandling an Estwing hatchet today. I'm making the handle out of an old hammer handle. WIP post will be later.

Also my toolbox is coming along, its the design and layout I'm nitpicking over so it's taking time.

Oh I forgot the second half of my story about the antique store!
I believe it was on my birthday that I went and chatted for about 45 minutes with the person running the shop that day.
She asked what interested me, I said knives. I began to describe why I love traditional knives, and what they mean to me. She was listening quite closely, and when I pulled out my own pocket knives she smiled deep and welled up.
"You pulling out your pocket knife reminds me of my dad so much. He always had a knife with him, even when he couldn't open it himself he would pull it out and hand it to someone to use for whatever needing cutting or trimming."
This made me quite happy, and I asked if she would care to tell me more about her father. She gladly obliged, and we went into talking about why people carry knives and other tools. She used to carry a knife around in her purse, but would forget about it and the TSA or security kept taking them.
After talking she said she would certainly pick out one of her dad's knives and start carrying it again, both for practicality and in honor of his memory.

Typing this up has brightened my day a bit. Hope you enjoyed.

You see it well,s this is a brazing to fix a leakage. It happened a saturday morning when I was leaving my job, just in front of the Cardin shop. happily I did not have the full 24l!

Jack there are a lot of pubs and bistros en route! :D

ConBon  this is a nice story...

Great bike pics! I had a Triumph 650 back in the late '60s. That was the last time I rode. My brother has a big Harley and loves it.

Duncan, you are a very talented dude!

Here's a backyard visitor a few minutes ago. I asked him politely to head back to the woods.

Life is good. It is Friday. I owe everyone and their brother money, but tomorrow morning I set out for the mountains, or hills as some of you in the Rockies would call them, of western Maryland for a knife show. I am teaching a class at work, and while they are looking out the window too, even on a dreary day like today, they are doing well with the examples we're going over. My dogs are doing well, although my old man is feeling his age in this nasty foggy drizzly weather (as am I, my back is horrible). I've gotten my truck back this week, paid over $2000 to get the front end fixed and new tires. I'm not done yet fixing it up. Nope, it's not a show truck, it's my daily driver, a 2003 Silverado. But it's good to have my truck back.

Listening to the comedian Joey Diaz's podcast, the Church of What's Happening Now (definitely rated R, maybe worse, for any interested), he said the following:

"I've got one foot in the grave and one foot on a banana peel."

I've got so much on my plate, as do many others, and my burden is nowhere near as bad as others burdens, but I am happy today. Thankful to be employed, thankful to have two great pups and thankful to be able to go to a knife show (window shopping for knives might be torture to some, not me).

Have a good one fellers and ladies.
