"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Had a June Bug land on my shoulder out on my back porch, he rested a bit then promptly flew off; only to circle back and smack my head. They'll be an annoyance in a week but I was happy to see them back tonight or should I say last night.

I'm up early because of all the echoes in my increasingly empty apartment. We won't be moving in to our new/first house till the first week of June but my wife and I have been boxing up everything unessential and moving it into storage. It's amazing how fast stuff accumulates. Three yrs of living in a 645 sqft apt and we are now the proud owners of 635 sqft of possessions. As the days count down till June and the need to find someone to take over my lease becomes more real, boxes march out so that potential tenants can march in.

Enjoy the Grosbeaks, Peregrin. The males showed up at my feeder about a week ago, now all I see is the occassional female. I think the males must be staking out their territory, high in the tree tops. Soon the leaves will hide them all.

Has anyone else gone from 3 to 2?

I realized a little while ago that I've been making the transition from always wanting 2 blades to preferring single blades. It started with my 21 Bull Buster, which is a single blade but with the fat handles of a sodbuster is almost as thick as a two bladed knife. Then I got the S&M 69 straight jack, which in my mind was an exception to the rule. Then MT Damascus sent me the Lanny's Clip from his contest. Then I traded into a canoe and GEC Workhorse, which are both double ended jacks. One day I looked at what I've been carrying for the last month or so and realized that they're all single blades, or at least single springs. Who knew?

Im with you Cory, I was most always a double blade carrier. The #38, 2014's? (Whatever yr the single blade stag #77 was) forum knife, single blade #77 barlow, #79 workhorse all started to dominate my carry:thumbup:

Count me in on the mix of single blade transition too. Single blade or a thin/single spring two blade. There's still a couple two blade, two spring knives in my collection, but they are the exception because they're relatively thin.

I went the other way, used to carry a lot of single blade lockbacks and linerlocks (traditional), and now carry mostly stockmen, SAKs and two-blade jacks, or even two of the above. Variety is GOOD!

One of the reasons I moved back from moderns was the desire to have multiple blade shapes on a knife. If I were going to carry a single blade knife, it would likely be a modern knife with modern blade steel having better edge retention. So, while I occasionally carry a single blade, it is not my primary style.

I do one blade most of the time, but I do carry two blades sometimes times. :)

i tend to be a one blade guy, lots of the collection are one bladers, i even have two blades modified usually. dont get me wrong, im sure there are good uses for multiple blades, but i do just fine with one

I guess a two blade would fit me fine day in and day out, except for food prep. Now I'm not a picky fellow, I eat food off the ground more than I care to admit, but I like having one blade reserved for cutting up fruits and meats, peeling oranges (I juice my eye using my thumb to start the peel a lot, so knife is used), and other food tasks. It's nice to know it wasn't in contact with some of the dirtier things I come across. If I have a sheepsfoot/wharncliffe, a clip, and anything else I should be fine. I will say the spey blade is becoming very nice for food, but only in a long length. My Case sowbelly is proving quite nice for that, and has freed up the clip for regular cutting duties. Normally I use the main clip on stockmen for food only, and it has its drawbacks being on the sidelines for everything else.
On top of all this, I am busy (lazy) so sharpening frequently is more taxing than having a few blades to use.

Loving this discussion, it's quite interesting.

Also, space is never really an issue for me. I don't notice the difference between a trapper and stockman of the same length in pocket. If I'm dressed up, I keep my knife in my suit coat or back pocket to avoid it bulging or swinging around when I walk.

I like my single blade knives but I've been experiencing a change of tastes and I really like the extra width and utility of a big main/small secondary two spring knife. Of course if you're going to pick up a two spring knife, why not get the most out of it and carry a Congress? At least that's what I'm telling myself as I eye up a new purchase.

I hope none minds, I read this in the daily carry thread but thought I'd reply here. Sounds like a truly hard week. God bless.

A little over a week and I'm 15+ pages behind.

This wasn't the greatest week for knife knuttery. I took photos for Stag Saturday last week, then from Sunday until the end of the week pretty much everything went pear-shaped. My cat passed at the beginning of the week which caught me off-guard because her vet was so cheerfully optimistic about her prospects when I first brought her in, so I spent most of the week dealing with that. I had some more nutsoid deadlines and a project I had proposed at work was nixed for reasons I consider silly but was not given an opportunity to argue. My wonky knee has been flaring up in a massive way, making getting around fairly difficult. Even my hockey team seems to be tanking all of a sudden. It's been a rough one, all told.

Stag Saturday from a week ago, a pair of Queens with some amorous avians:

The handful of knives I thoughtlessly grabbed Sunday turned into a week-long carry -- with one change midway through. My head wasn't anywhere near choosing knives to carry each day, so I just kept toting the same ones. At one point I swapped the stag gunstock for the Barlow (since carrying two larger knives was proving a bit inconvenient) but I figured the lot deserved some sort of commemoration, so towards the end of the week I took a quick snapshot of the group that got me through my rough patch.

Yesterday's Stag Saturday totes (old photos, including one of the last I took of my poor cat):

A couple Cases comprise Synthetic Sunday's selections:

With any luck, this week will be better than the last.

Yes indeed. TsarBomba, I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat. Plus the piling on of work stress, health stress, sports team stress. (I confess I don't quite get the last one. :) ) Be sure to take care of yourself.

Please pray for my uncle, it looks like hospice is the next step for him. I can't say the things I'd like to say about cancer, here. Our hopes are up for him, but his body is rejecting treatment. Your prayers are appreciated, I haven't given up. Most importantly, neither has he.

I'm very sorry to hear this. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
