hematite?

Those look like "Apache Tears" to me.

Small pebbles of volcanic glass - obsidian.

When I was a kid, we would find pieces of obsidian lying around in Vancouver BC, which I suppose came from a long extinct volcano now called "Little Mountain."

I'm beginning to think I'm going to be a jackknife fan. After a decade of stockmen superiority I've come to find myself not needing and being irritated by the third blade.
I don't have any good jacks currently, but am working on a Camillus made Frontier that should be quite a nice blade orientation for me.

Has anyone else gone from 3 to 2? I know the cult of the peanut has, but I've yet to find a peanut with a good wharnie main so I am not making that switch at the moment.

Check out the Texas Jack:

The lack of wharncliffe or sheepsfoot main keeps me from buying one. I have the frontier that is about 3.5" long that, when refurbished, will fit the bill and let me try out the style.

I'll look into Case, Queen, and some other cheaper than GEC makers.

Thank you for your help these past two days Rachel (I believe that is your name, but I may be mistaken), you've been quite helpful!

Yup, but in this case Pele's tears from Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii.

If you are looking for a 2-blade jack with a Wharncliffe then Case has several offerings in their mini-trapper pattern with a Wharncliffe instead of the Spey along with the clip. Decent knives and a good easy to carry size. 6207w, 6.5207w are current models.

Leghog when I first saw this picture I thought they looked like Brach's Bridge Mix candies my grandmother always had when I was a kid but I couldn't remember what they were called so I didn't post. Just goes to show you where a fat boys mind is. :D

I do what I can. :o
I look forward to some pictures of how your Frontier works out after your refurbishment.

Oh- I just had a thought: have you looked at the Case Swayback Jack? It's 3.5 inches with a wharncliffe main, though hard to find these days.

Perfect ideas ladies and gentlemen! The swayback jack would be quite nice, I had forgotten about them.

Take a look at the RR Improved Muskrat. Long sheepfoot main and a Turkish clip. It is about 4" closed, but still quite slim and unobtrusive in the pocket. I love this knife and carry it almost every day. Best $11.47 I ever spent.

Schatt & Morgan Horticultural Knife: Redbone, 3.5" Clip Master, Sheepfoot secondary. Might be of interest too.

Things are starting to green up here. The Rose-breasted Grosbeaks came back to our feeders on April 25 this year. They winter in Central-Southern Mexico to Central America. A long way from Central New York. This male seems to think this window feeder, that looks out over our property, is his.

I went for a walk today, and saw this wood duck. In the middle of the city in the middle of Texas. :) A creek passes under the street, and I took a bad phone pic looking down from the sidewalk. (His wife was camera shy). I wish I'd had a real camera with me.

That is a beautiful wood duck Rachel. The wood duck Drake is as beautiful as ducks get in my opinion. With the harlequin Drake a close second.
