"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I am sorry to hear that Jack. A lot of great and brave men and women have sacrificed all for our freedom. God Bless America and our allies!!

thanks, Randy. he actually passed due to a freak bicycle accident a few years ago. He got his first severe brain trauma during training, and this second one settled him. His brothers still kid about how I ran into the ICU and grabbed the chart from the ventilator, until the nurse stopped me. I had actually forgotten I wasn't in school or in scrubs, and was back on the other side of the fence as friends/family of the victim. still remember when his family decided to pull the plug, fastest time i finished a bottle of jack.

edit: on a happier note, how do you like your 494?

One hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Jutland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Jutland) this weekend, in which nearly 10,000 British and German sailors lost their lives :(

Here it's a three-day weekend, known officially today as Spring Bank Holiday, but formerly as Whitsuntide. When I was a kid, it the time you were given new clothes. Have a good weekend everyone

For my UK friends --- look what I found today. Ought to be worth about 20 US cents.

I'll see your Half Crown and raise you a Shilling of the same year of course. :D
Jack Black goodies. And a cool bit of trivia that I didn't know until recently; the Shilling was also referred to as a "bob". How fitting. :D:thumbup:

Today I found coins in a glass jar I've been totin' around from move to move since I was a kid.

UK, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Korea, France, Germany, Yugoslavia, Israel, Kuwait, UAE, Afghanistan, Portugal, Spain, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Probably some others I can't recall.

Sounds like quite a collection Leghog

Okay, Bob... I'll see your '48 Bob and raise you a '48 two Shillings.

Nice '48 and Two-Bob :)

When I was a kid, the Boy Scouts used to have an annual fund-raising Bob-A-Job week, where Scouts offered to perform chores (washing cars, carrying shopping, gardening, etc) in return for a shilling.

Next weekend my wife and I have our first camping trip of the year. But, tonight, my Opinel No. 10 and I are pretending we are already there.

Anyone care for some potatoes and onions cooked in foil with a generous dose of butter, salt, and pepper? :)

Sounds good to me! I've always enjoyed cooking in foil packs ever since Cub Scouts as a kid and an Opinel works well as a food prep knife. I'm not sure what it is about campfire cooking that makes a meal so satisfyingly good, even though they are often simple recipes.

I'll take mine with some carrots, bell peppers, and venison burgers added to it.;)

Hope you and the Mrs. have a good time next weekend.

Don, your version looks great! I'd completely forgotten, but my mom made these foil packs with potatoes and hamburgers a few times when I was a kid. I was always in charge of getting the charcoal going. I should try it again. :)

I completely agree about camp cookery. Simple ingredients are elevated after a good day outdoors!

And, yup, Tyler, that's exactly how I was cooking these tonight along with chicken and okra directly over the flame.

Looks delicious guys, campfire food just can't be beat

In which meako does a good deed.
Today I drove my almost blind but very with it neighbour to ALDI in Wollongong.
She is 91 this year. She needed to get some groceries as she will be cooking dinner for Janette me and the boys on Wednesday. There will be soup ,meatloaf and strudel.
Long story short have a look at ,'the rats of Tobruk' ww2.
Her husband Wal RIP was among them.
An amazing lady.
We did not have a 2dollar coin to get the shopping trolley. So I went in and purchased a re usable token.
Shopping done I went to retreive my token. It wouldnt dislodge. An old guy told me I needed a sharp instrument if I want to get it out. He had a smug knowing look on his old face. Thanks mate I said as I ferreted around in my bum bag and produced my #15 scout. And even smuglier popped that little sucker out and snapped shut.
There was a moment of almost dismay which was eclipsed when he said 'niiiice!'.

I like the anecdote Meako, but you meant to type pocket didn't you? :D ;)

Slow cooking boneless chicken breasts in a crock with a sesame ginger sauce and onion. Later I'll add carrots, bell pepper and peas to the crock then cook some rice, and we'll have a supper easy yet very tasty meal by the time my wife gets off her shift as RN this evening. This afternoon I'll make an easy drop peach cobbler for dessert.

I suspect he was talking about a waist pack - here in the states they used to call them fanny packs, but "fanny" means a different body part south of the equator than it does here.

All.this campfire cooking made me hungry so I called the local Cracker Barrel and ordered lunch. I had the campfire beef plate. I know that's cheating but it sure was good. :D
