"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My father-in-law, David Gould was one of my best friends. Most people called him Dave, but to family he was just Pa. Pa was an avid traditional knife collector, war veteran, and lived to see his grandchildren. We spent countless hours together comparing slipjoints, sharpening them, horse trading, and haggling over new arrivals in the mail. He particularly loved stag and bone covers.

I lost Pa this morning. He died as peacefully as a person possibly can, quietly asleep in his home, sitting in his favorite chair at the age of 86. There was no pain, and no fear of being in a hospital or nursing home.

He was a good friend and wonderful man. I will miss him dearly.

Pa left his knife collection to me. I'll sort through them in the coming week, and maybe post up some pictures.

Sorry for your pain, you show a great picture of what life should always be. Serenity and confidence in the futur.

We have a crazy cat named Tigger that has to explore everything. She loves boxes, cabinets, closets and anything she can get in and peer out. She really thinks no one can see her when she's in a box or whatever. Tonight as my granddaughter was putting a case of water in the fridge as soon as she got half way through putting them up Tiger jumped in the container and refused to move.

My kitten also loved to invade bags and cardboard boxes. Miss her really!

Sunday 9/11/16 we were on our way back from a wedding in PA and stopped in the Case Museum in Bradford, PA. It was well worth the visit. This was my first time there and I don't think it'll be my last. Nice folks, a great facility and the Museum store has all manner of goodies.
Thank you for the pictures, very interesting indeed.

My condolences for your loss, Buzzbait. You were blessed to have such a wonderful relationship with him.

Your kitten is the spitting image of mine.
They do like to make themselves comfortable, don't they?

Well if I go missing here for a while have the police investigate my wife because today was our anniversary and I forgot. :D Tomorrow will be a trip to the jewelry store, flower store, clothing store, shoe store, car dealership, travel agent and on and on. :)

Oh, man, Randy!!:eek::eek: That's WAY less than ideal! Hopefully you've saved up enough "marriage capital" in the past to be able to post the bail necessary to get out of the doghouse! Serious situation, but I couldn't help but laugh about the way you wrote about it.:D

Randy, dont forget the chocolate store, happy anniversary to you and the missus

Another maritime saga ... then it dawned on us -there was no way out of the pit of death. The sides collapsing into the water as they frantically tried to scramble up. ...Fortunately both could swim....but not indefinitely and certainly not until Monday when the Water Board workers were due to return. ...Luckily and its pure luck there was enough rope (nylon tie down stuff) to throw them a life line and haul them out .

meako, sounds like a nightmare! What your mates called chicken we know is actually common sense, something not so common these days. Good thing you had enough of it or those two may not have survived. Good old common sense surfaced a second time that day, when you went home to watch Dr. Who. :) Hope your mates were able to reach adulthood.:)

@Randy : Happy Anniversary! (arguing about leap year is not a good excuse!)

Buzz, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I can never think of anything to say when I hear sad news like this - I'll raise a dram at the weekend for him.

Randy, I'm sorry to hear of your memory loss! This could prove costly indeed, time to think on your feet so you can sweep her of hers and salvage the situation! [emoji33]

Fine pix lately! Everybody, rightly, thinks their Beau or Cat or Dog is the most beautiful on earth :thumbup::thumbup:

I won't hear of criticisms of my Tabby, nor of the various women in my life either....:D

Can't post any pix of the Cat as the Macbook died on me and how do I retrieve the lost i-photo archive?? grhh!:(

Maybe can you use the drive in a box as an external and retrieve your documents :(

About ten years ago, I made the mistake of letting some idiot use my computer, and he not only managed to format the hard-drive, but also destroyed my back-up on the (very expensive at the time) removeable hard-drive, and subsequently to physically break the drive trying to retrieve the data!!  There are plenty of companies who specialise in data-retrieval, but it's very expensive. Using two pieces of free software, I eventually managed to recover over 90% of my stuff from the computer hard-drive, but it was a very long and laborious process. Still gives me nightmares!

The last years before I retire, I was part time teacher for an evening class organized by the Paris council. One evening while learning the very basic ofcomputing (that time it was creating a new file) a student somehow managed to wreck a Jeep-sturdy IBM micro. I saw him, all he needed was just one single click. How? I still wonder!

Let's hope things did not go that far for Will.
After the class was finished I was really wondering what could have happened. I was riding home along the Seine banks, lost in thoughts, and did not see 1) the police car just behind me, 2) the red light hanging in front over me. I must have been looking so absent minded when the couple of police (wo)men stopped me that they just checked my license and did not fine me when I explained them why I was riding at 35/40 kmh and did not notice anything around. This was probably my best advocate! :) Usually such things happen only in movies!

Buzz I am very sorry for you and your family's loss of Pa . He sounds like a man that I would have liked very much to have known . I will be carrying Stag and Bone tomorrow . Very interested in seeing pictures of his collection also.

I've been tempted by the $30 Laguiole kits. Where else are you going to get a Laguiole for $30? They shouldn't be that hard to do.
