"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

couple of police (wo)men stopped me that they just checked my license and did not fine me when I explained them why I was riding at 35/40 kmh and did not notice anything around. This was probably my best advocate! :) Usually such things happen only in movies!

I guess you've still got it!

Great pics, Gary! I like that wharncliffe Teardrop Jack you picked up, beautiful knife!

Thanks, Barrett! I felt like a kid in a candy store!

Gary-great tour of Case factory. I would love to visit there-can't see it happening anytime soon tho- I read with interest how you managed to score a new knife AND brownie points from SWMBO. Masterful stroke Sir .

Thanks, Meako. I'm glad we made the stop. We usually travel to Pittsburgh when going into Pennsylvania, which takes us a different route.

Very sorry for your loss Buzzbait.

Thanks for going to the trouble of posting all those great photos Gary, it looks like a fantastic visit  So nice of everyone to give you such a welcome! :D

Oops! Boy, is that going to cost you Randy! :D A belated Happy Anniversary to you and the missus my friend

Incredible Paul :)

Did you put the blue light on?! :D

I couldn't help myself, Jack. Glad you enjoyed the pics.

Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes.

Gary I really enjoyed the picture tour of Case and that Teardrop you went home with looks great.

I have enjoyed the pet pictures thanks for posting.

SP good idea build your own Laguolie and save money. I have been going deeper and more aggressive in maintenance on my knives for a while with sanding, profile and change the shape of blades blades my goal to start changing out covers, blades and basically rebuilding slipjoints. I just thought a few of these kits would give me a good feel for putting a completely disassembled knife together. I've bought a few tools and some old junk knives to experiment and learn from but would still like a few more tools.

Do we have a dogs and pocket knives thread? I don't particularly care for open blades with pups, mainly because my labs must have retractable pogo sticks in their paws, and I wouldn't think of putting an open blade under their paws like I see on FB :o.

But closed blades and pups? No worries, as long as no young pups try to ingest any knives.

Pardon me today, I has the dumb...

I don't have a Photobucket style account, and do most of my picture posting on Facebook knife groups. I have a ton of photos from the Bill Moran museum. Can I send these pics to someone here that can post them? Tools content but a ton of knife content.

OK, I know there's a thread about knives and movies. But in this instance it is not a movie, just a 5' daily tv show on the French 2nd channel after the News. The name is Parents, Instructions of Use , showing a middle class standard French family.
Today, one sketch was the Grand'Pa and the Pa offering a SAK to the family elder (there's also a 14y girl an a younger boy). Just to explain, that boy only lives to catch birds - sorry Ladies, that may not be politically correct, but you know how we are  - and the two grown-ups (?) just tell him that THERE NOTHING BETTER THAN A SAK TO CATCH BIRDS (sorry again Ladies, I'm def not politicallly correct - Oh, how do I like it! :D).
Here is the pix I could catch showing the boy in front of the OT and the father with the (seamingly modified) knife. The boy clearly sees his futur with a new eye!

I thought I'd share with y'all a new exercise routine I developed last night.

My wife and I were attending a concert at a winery. I realized after we left the car that I had my 34OT in my pocket, but didn't really expect that they'd be checking us on entry. Sure enough, they had metal detectors and the person monitoring the station deemed my Middleman to be a weapon when I put it in the basket with my keys, wallet, and phone. So, I left my wife there and ran back to the car. Upon arriving, I realized that my wife had the car keys. So, I ran back to the entry and got the keys her, then back to the car, and then took a brisk walk the final return trip to cool down a bit.

The kicker is that the second time through the check station they just wanded me while I had my pocket contents still in my hands. It would have been so much quicker if I'd been sent to that person in the first place. ;)

At any rate, I got some exercise, we enjoyed the concert and the venue, and I feel as though I've completed a rite of passage.

Hardcore exercise routine Greg guaranteed to lose the weight of the knife. :D All joking aside our society has become so paranoid that at times you have to wonder if the motivation is safety or control. I know in an age of terrorism, gang violence and crazy people that for what ever reason have a desire to randomly massacre people you have to have a watchful eye. However IMO a man with a stockman that has a 2.5 inch main blade does not constitute a threat. I could better understand if you were carrying a folding pocket sword with a 5 inch blade that's very appearance screams 'I am a weapon to take very seriously" could and should be reason for alarm but a little Schrade Stockman causing a security breach is going a little far. Okay I'll get off my soap box now and glad you didn't have your knife confiscated my friend.

Who just landed that Robeson Jack for $31?!?

My session expired and I couldn't get my offer in... I am rather disappointed right now...

Greg, I'm familiar with (and thoroughly dislike) the first part of that routine you described. I hate going to sporting events, concerts, etc. and having to wonder, "Will they have metal detectors? Do I need to leave my pocket knife in the car?" I bet a pocket slip could come in handy in that instance; drop it in the tray with your keys and all that, I doubt anyone would know what it was or think twice about it.

32 years ago today, I married my best friend and lover. I remind myself I could still screw this up. I LOVE MY WIFE! Always have. Always will.

Anyone from this forum going to Kansas City next week for the I.C.C.E show. There will be some fine traditional knives on display. Here is a stunner that I am looking forward to picking up.

Sounds like a great show, Kris. Maybe someday.
That's one gorgeous hunk of knife there. Whose the maker?

Would love to see you there, Gary, hopefully the folks in the ABS and Guild can keep this great show going. That beauty is by Ben Seward, tight ladder pattern, darkened zirconium guard, and mortised bark mammoth ivory. Ben's dad, David, is going to make me another extraordinary sheath for it, can't wait to see it all together. We will try to get it professionally photographed.
