"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I just pack them in my checked bags. Never had a problem.

That is usually what I do. I keep a specific knife in the collection just for travel. With the ridiculous fees the airlines are charging I would consider not checking a bag if I could.

Dan what did wrong was send the knives east. Now you have no excuse to go pawn shopping/knife shopping in PA.:p You could have used the postage fees to send some new ones west.

I am spending the next two weeks in PA with my folks. Gonna be fishing and shooting pool and all kinds of good stuff. I sent a knife to their house. Two knives. My fishing knife and a Buck 303 Cadet. Is this insanity?

Of course it is! You mailed it to the wrong address! PM me and I'll give you my address, err, I mean the correct address. :D

A knife is a must for fishing. What if your anchor gets stuck, need to cut some line or cut some bait or any other number of tasks? Not sure what you would need one for shooting pool but still sounds like a sane thing to do.

Nothing wrong with that... although you could have went shopping in PA for a new knife (Case, Queen, and GEC all have factories in PA if I recall) for both yourself and your dad.

What's wrong with you!? Just kidding! Like said, you could have got new knives when you got there, or given it to your father to use.

There are several knife shops in PA, lots of old hardware and sporting goods stores in rural towns. Take a couple in your checked luggage, ones that you would not miss too terribly bad if they are lifted, and set some money aside to pick up a few while on vacation. I've gotten some great knives while just out on day trips up in the mountains.

What part of PA are you going to?

Is this insanity? Has anyone else done this. My Dad is not a knife guy, so I can't borrow. And I can't be naked for two weeks!

I was surprised I chose the Buck as the primary.

I'm not surprised. The 303 is one very exellent pocket knife for a wide range of roles. Good from opening mail to field dressing a deer, and a lot in between. In fact, I watched my old friend and co-worker do exactly that. THe Buck 303 was his edc, and he was one of those non knife people who carry a knife because that was his generations thing. He picked the 303, and for many years that was his edc pocket knife, fishing knife, and hunting knife. Andy was a legendary one knife man. The 303 is a great knife, and you could probably go the rest of your life with it as your only edc and get by very well. But since you are afflicted with 'our' disease, that's not going to happen, is it?

Carl.

Exactly!. :D

Not too many years ago I used to budget my trips to PA for just such a knife purchase or two. It gave me something to look forward to while in a place where all the grand US slipjoint knife factories were. I always managed to pick up a real great pattern or two and handle a bunch in the process. However, I would always have to post them back home prior to my departure.. But, whatever the case, mailing your knives ahead was a good idea if'n you were not going to go knife shopping while you were there.

Best,
Anthony

About to head to the airport. Try to address all.

Carlisle is where I'm headed, but then to the woods.

Damn, should have thought of knife shopping...might still do some.

Check a bag? Perish the thought. :)

LKJW (Dan),

Shipping ahead is the safest way, or when you do have checked bags, leave a few users at your most often visited hotel or relative at your more frequent destinations.

If you visit Chicago, it is very difficult to buy a knife within the City Limits. Legal blade length is 2"

I have not yet checked to see if the felony carries a mandatory sentence of one year like the NJ Gun Law.

It has been a while since I could buy SAKs at the local ACE Hardware in Chicago. There are no Cutlery Stores in the Chicago phone books.

PA sounds like paradise.

PA sounds like paradise.
And Chicago sounds like the opposite.

Ok well time for a funny story involving your one and only Ash. :D

Two night ago my roommate and I decide to go to subway in ohio for dinner (about 15 mins from home) so we eat and then I decide I would like a nice cold beer. I purchase my 24oz can of budlight (subway is inside gas station) and I want to drink it on the way home so I tell my rommy to drive. I don't believe in drinking and driving. Well I go to get in passenger seat and notice a couple brown paper bags and a few other things that need trashed so I trash them in the outside can. Now lets fast forward to tonight. I'm feeling up my medicine box and remember the meds I had picked up 4 days ago I left in car. Well I go out to car and can't find them in that brown paper back that the pharmacy gave me. I'm looking around my car wondering where in the heck they went, when the light bulb in my head goes off. Oh heck no I threw them away 2 days ago at subway when I cleaned my car. I look up the # to the subway and call to see if dumbster has been emptied. I explain that I think I threw my meds away and they tell me no it hasn't been but there is about 20 or so bags of trash in it ,but I'm free to go threw it. So off I go at 10pm on Monday night to be dumpster lady. 8 bags later then is my meds all still within that paper baggie. If that wasn't my sleeping meds I'd have left them and waited the 30 days for a refill but I didn't like the idea of going 30 days with no sleep. I'm just happy I found them. My roomys says it all happened because I got that beer. She might be right because if I wouldn't have went to passenger side I wouldn't have cleaned my car out 9 outta 10 times. :)

Funny story, Ash. Glad you found your meds. I hope you had another beer after digging around in that dumpster all that time.:p

Welcome back, Chinpo!! Very happy to hear this great news!!

Lots of great spots around Carlisle. Bass Pro Shops in Harrisburg, Cabelas in Hamburg. Down the road is Hanover, stop in the Snyders or Utz factory stores. Great butcher shop across the street called Sensenigs, can stop in there on Saturday for pit beef. Gettysburg to the southwest. Only knife shops in the area are Edgeworks in Frederick, a good hike, and Country Knives outside Lancaster, a good hike too. Literally thousands of antique and junk shops in York, Adams, Lancaster counties. Have fun!

Any car shows this weekend? I have the truck show in August on my calendar, hope my vehicle woes are resolved by then.
