"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

How awesome is that.
What a great photo of Stan- and check out a Stan Shaw Knife owned by our Jack- made for Jack by the man himself- I just can't get over that one- compare this to Charlie receiving a Bose from the man himself- both knife making legends.

Edit- now folks- check out Stans Hands- zoom in - we have discussed this before - and I absolutely love the black and white photo of this great mans hands- Stan is 90 - yet I am sure he could choke the life from a Silverback Gorilla with those iron Hands.

Stan was telling me today about how he still does all his sawing and filing at break-neck speed, because he was on piece-work for so long! His missus, Rosemary, sometimes asks him why he doesn't slow down, but he says that he's been doing it so long that's the only speed he knows! :D :)

Jack that is a spectacular looking knife - Congrats!
as to the PB filled pretzels, they are addictive.
I would gladly send you a tub, if you would like to try some.

Thank you :) That is a very kind offer my friend, but it is perhaps a good thing that peanut butter filled pretzels are not available here! :D I was built like a rake when I was a kid, but these days I only have tp look at a doughnut, and I put on 5lbs! :D

Thanks spell check it's supposed to be peanut butter filled pretzels.

both sound good with wine Randy, or beer!

Yes they do! :D

A new knife, a bottle of wine, a good film, and a packet of Snyders Pretzels...does life get any better than this?! :D ;)

I was surprised to see that Snyder's Pretzels are an international favorite. My wife has enjoyed the Snyder's Sourdough Nibblers for years. A couple of years ago, while on vacation, I discovered the charms of Snyder's Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips, but my ardor for them has cooled since the bag dropped from 16 oz. to 12 oz. but the price didn't change!

LOL! :D I only picked it up this afternoon Charlie, so haven't had a chance to take more than a couple of pics :o I'll try and get some soon my friend  In the meantime...;)

Awesome pic! A satisfied grin behind a beautiful knife!!

Does anyone else enjoy writing with a fountain pen? With the appreciation shown for pocket watches, safety razors, and other venerable instruments that have passed their peak favor with the masses, I thought I might find some kindred spirits here on the porch.

I first dabbled with them maybe fifteen years ago. About six or seven years ago I came back to them and they've been my preferred writing implement ever since. I find writing with them to be a more intentional process and that helps with both my handwriting and my focus. The irony is that I make my living working with computers, yet my best thinking and problem solving comes when I put pen to paper.

I mostly use inexpensive every-day models from Lamy and Pelikan and have developed a fondness for J. Herbin inks and Rhodia paper.

It's a rich world, though, and I'm sure there are new favorites waiting to be found.

So, porch friends, any one else frequently find themselves with ink stains on their finger tips?

Greg, I've always enjoyed writing by hand (which is somewhat ironic, as my handwriting is a near-illegible mix of cursive and print), and I actually have a Lamy fountain pen that I believe is the same model as your blue one there (Safari, I think it's called?), but I haven't had much luck with it. Judging by the bottles of ink in your photo, I'm assuming you use the adapter you can fill yourself rather than the cartridges? That's what I was doing -- bought the adapter and a couple bottles of Noodler's ink -- but I was never able to get ink to flow smoothly enough. Maybe it's the way I write, which is pretty quick and requires smooth, fast-flowing ink. It's almost impossible for me to write with a regular ballpoint Bic-type pen. My preference is liquid ink rollerball pens, like the Uni-ball Vision. I had thought a fountain pen would be perfect for me, but I just couldn't get it to work well enough.

Jack, those jalapeño pretzel pieces sound pretty good. As a snack this afternoon, I dug out every kind of mustard I had in my fridge, put a little of each on a plate and dipped pretzels into them. It was great. Of course, the best thing about pretzels is how well they go with beer. :D

Sarah (~P~) Does the most exquisite hand writing- - I am not too sure if this is by Fountain Pen or Caligraphy Pen? But to those who are lucky enough- can vouch for this.

I can vouch for that statement my kiwi friend, she sent me a knife a few years ago along with a letter and a coin. Very nice penmanship.
I tend to choose a pencil as my weapon of choice - I enjoy sharpening them. :)

They're not easy to get hold of here, so when I see them, I snap them up GT! :D

Sounds like a good afternoon :) I'll second that my friend :)
