"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My laptop passed away today and this Kindle is just not cutting it. Any of you tech guy's recommend something $300 or less. 99% of the time it will be used for BF, Ebay, knife dealers and pictures. Would like a dvd/cd player burner but not a deal breaker.

Thanks

Randy, the thing about computers is that they all become obsolete within a few years and even sooner when you buy the cheap ones. Look for at least an I5 processor. You don't need 1Tb of storage and you can always get an external burner. I would look an an Asus and have never found Lenovo worth with the deals.

Im an Apple fan though :D

sorry to hear about that Randy. luckily a stop by best buy will show that most laptop nowadays are around $350-$500 unless you want it to be able to something special

Thanks guys
I've been bouncing between BF and computer sites this evening. I usually buy computer stuff from tigerdirect but everything I'm interested in is out of stock. You're right Jack i might have to up how much I spend on this thing. I can use the desktop during the day but my wife stays on it in the evenings and since she can take me in a fair fight it's me the Kindle and this stupid stylus.

RIP Bob - and condolences to the family.

Randy - try MicroCenter. similar pricing to TD and pretty decent service.
also - look at reman machines. they usually come with a similar warranty as new machines but have been thoroughly tested so 99/100 will actually work out of the box rather than the 9/10 you get with new machines.

Bob Andrews, from Old Hundred Collectibles passed away yesterday! After fighting cancer for quite a while, it overtook him.
I am sad to see him go! He was a friendly and honest man, and one of my SFO dealers. He missed the Rendezvous at GEC this year - for the first time I can remember!
A stalwart of this knife community, we are going to miss him!
Rest in Peace, Bob!

P.S. it might take Bob's wife a while to sort out Bob's online store - be as patient as you can.

I am sorry to hear this.
My condolences to friends and family.

A sad day for the traditional knife community. Bob and I had several conversations in the past and he was the best! We had a common background in construction and then GEC sales. He always gave me sound advice and willingly shared any information he could.

Rest in peace Bob.

I'm not in a Union but I do hope they can get this over turned. :(

Brett I'm not sure what this means-you get the same salary but with a 60% cut for the first month and 25% cut each month for 10 months??!!! sounds a bit like a rip off to me.
But hey I'm no financier or accountant-certainly not of the same calibre the one your employer is using and probably paying a lot more than they pay you to shortchange you.

Do you guys not have a teachers union? If not I suggest starting one.
I think if you want the unions to get this type of thing done you really should join. Most of the working conditions we enjoy today(sick leave, holidays, safety equipment, standardised working hours, overtime to name but a few) anywhere in any job were brought about by Unionism. The working conditions that "management " seem to be doing their best to remove.

Brett there is something fundamentally wrong with a scheme that puts teachers and their families under financial strain like this. I wonder if those who instigated these changes get the same paycut ...or.... do they get a bonus payment for slashing the budget:rolleyes:

divide and conquer ,obfuscate, prevaricate, change the goal line, renege on the agreements, do one thing say the opposite-standard management practices.

My friend it is an extremely complicated system, but yes we do have teacher unions. Im still researching them before giving my money and endorsement. In short, most of them support things with their funding that I wont go into here that I disagree with

I redid my math several times since my post. I calculated wrong, but not by much. The first month is still correct but the following months it is 14.5% of my check. The two months where I will have three checks is where I will make up the rest of my salary.

A local bank here that endorses the district has kindly offered small loans with no background check to help the teachers adjust, with interest added on of course. I will not be taking their offer on that.

Edit: Maybe I shouldn't put that info out there

Anyways, each election this changes. Time to get out and vote America.

On a better note, I have been accepted to attend an all expense paid Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia conference in New Port, VA. in a couple of weeks.

Ive never had the chance to speak to other families or kids who are impacted by GT. St. Jude is amazing but they do not have a specialist so it will be great to speak to the docs who specialize in GT as well.

Not sure how much free time I will have but I do hope to get out and see the city a bit.

Appreciate that Kris. Loved the photos of you and Paige. She is a cutie :)

The best to you and yours buddy

That's great news, Brett. Hopefully you'll pick up some information that'll be helpful to your family. Sorry to hear about your work troubles. We've gone through similar pay adjustments, and it's never fun. Going the other way can wreak havoc as well, you budget your family one way and when that goes away it's tough to make the adjustment.

Kris, I agree with Brett. Your pictures with Paige made my day. Enjoy it. They are so precious at that age.

That's Great Brett! I hope you the trip is beneficial for you and your family. I hate to here about the change in your finances and insurance. But keep fighting the good fight Brother.

My 18 year old granddaughter that lives with us has type 1 diabetes and Monday morning she developed ketoacidosis and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. Just got her out and back home this morning and it sure is great to have her home. Even though they have grown up you still love and worry about them as much as you did when they were little.

Hope she has a speedy recovery. I was diagnosed with Type 2 last year, so the "D" word is one that I'm familiar with.

You are right about the worrying. "Comes with the territory."
Glad she is OK.
