"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks guy's. The porch is full of some of the nicest and most compassionate people I've ever encountered. It's really more like an extended family staying in touch with each other with a common interest than just a knife forum. I thank you all for the making this such a great place that I feel honored to be a part of.

Eighteen is still a kid to us, Randy, so my heart goes out to her and the whole family. That's too young to be having major problems.

Cory and GMan1 - I appreciate the kindness guys.

Randy - prayers my friend for her, you, and your soul mate brother.

Bob Andrews, from Old Hundred Collectibles passed away yesterday! After fighting cancer for quite a while, it overtook him.
I am sad to see him go! He was a friendly and honest man, and one of my SFO dealers. He missed the Rendezvous at GEC this year - for the first time I can remember!
A stalwart of this knife community, we are going to miss him!
Rest in Peace, Bob!

P.S. it might take Bob's wife a while to sort out Bob's online store - be as patient as you can.
That is sad. A genuinely nice man every time I dealt with him on the phone. Wish I could be more like that.

A couple months ago, I acquired a few thin, cross cut pieces of a log that I had started using for most of my knife photos, like this one:

They had originally been used as part of the table decorations at my sister-in-law's wedding last fall, and my in-laws brought them out when they came to visit the baby. Today, as I was moving one of them to take a couple of photos, I noticed a lot of sawdust under where it had been sitting. Upon closer inspection, I saw that it wasn't just sawdust; it was also termite droppings, or frass, I guess it's called; whatever the tiny little pellets are that they leave behind.

This is what the inside of the bark looked like when I started breaking pieces off.

The pieces had been sitting out on my (wood) back patio table, so I'm hoping I don't find termites in it next, and I'm definitely hoping they don't get into the house. :(

Now my nice pieces of wood for knife photos have become pieces of firewood. :D

Yum. Roasted termites. I hear they are a delicacy in some places.

Fingers crossed for the table and house!

I expect smaller channels from what I believe to be termites, if I'm reading the photos correctly.
But I wouldn't want boring moth caterpillars in the house either.

Barrett, I like how you approach life's little annoyances. Got pest-infested wood? No worries, lets have a campfire! :D I hope that's the end of the story.

I did not see any actual termites (or anything else, for that matter), so my diagnosis is certainly not 100%. This is some of what I had originally seen when I was moving the pieces around, which made me think termites:

I'm thinking that whatever ate that fire wood is not a termite but a caterpillar-and it eats live wood and won't be interested in your house timbers.:)
I'd do a bit of internetting and see what type of termites ,wood gobbling ants and caterpillars exist in your region.
Before you call any "pest guy"
Be sure to have a visual check underneath the house with a torch- if you are able -look on the top surface of the bearers for more frass.
If you find any give 'em the bad news with some bug spray.
Look for a surface spray that will stay effective by killing any bug that walks on the surface.

I had a pest guy come and check my place a few years ago- he actually put his ear to the wall and told me he'd be able to hear them.
They also have sniffer dogs that can detect termite activity.

I can hear carpenter ants from a few feet away, or I could a few years ago. They make a tiny chiming sound.
I wonder what happened with that guy in Europe who had sacred woodpeckers attacking his house a while back.

chiming? thats ominous  like the approach of the cenobites

White oak borer beetle or one of the many other longhorn beetle species that seem to abound the Arkansas region.

Thanks, Meako! I appreciate your research. Although I live in Arizona now, the wood did come from back in Arkansas, so you could be right on. I Googled the type of beetle you mentioned and saw some photos of damage that looked similar to the inside of that bark I broke off. Either way, hopefully whatever it was, if it was still in the wood, got burned up in my little campfire the other day. :D
