"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I worked retail while in college and vowed to never participate in Black Friday shenanigans. It is absolutely miserable to be an employee of a big box retail store during Black Friday, and that's coming from someone who worked at one of the least visited BF stores. I couldn't imagine working at a Wal-Mart or Best Buy or shopping mall. I have an aunt that camps out and does the whole bit. I don't get it.

My kids went Black Friday shopping. As for me, unless the Exchange here starts having sales, I'm good without Black Friday. I find better deals throughout the year, anyway.

Better deals in January from most places, at least the big retailers.

Black Friday. Left house at 0545 for my annual trek to Tractor Supply. back home by 0630 with two synthetic shirts for winter.

I worked at Wal-Mart for two Black Fridays in the lay-a-way department... so horrible. Got there at like 6AM and worked until 10PM that night both times. I never touched a register, I spent the entire time boxing stuff and storing it on the shelves in the back or the extra storage trailers that were brought in, and I consider myself lucky (though I still had to deal with a lot of customers yelling and cussing and fighting). A large chunk of that stuff never got purchased and was put back on the shelves a few months later. After my second time through Wal-Mart employment (once in high school, once in college) I vowed to never step foot in another Wal-Mart (not just because of Black Friday, but definitely didn't help) and to never participate in Black Fridays.

Gatlinburg, TN partially burned last night and the fire was headed to Dolly World. Many homes around that area have also burned. The most perplexing thing about this is that many of the fires burning throughout the SE have been set purposely - arson.

We have quite a few members here at BF that are most likely affected by these fires. A thought for them and the people in the burn areas world be appropriate.

Yup, arsonists caused the several wildfires in GA, SC, NC, TN, and KY. Oughta hang 'em.

Jack, sorry to hear about your computer woes. I use Mac at home, but have had to deal with Windows 10 on computers at work, and I did not enjoy it. Good luck. :(

Thanks Barrett, hope you don't get any problems following the compulsory 'anniversary update'

I can commiserate, Jack! I've had my share of down time, and
I am stubbornly running XP (2002), and hope to take it to the grave:rolleyes: (in 30 years or so!!:o)
When will that looney bin called microsoft write a straightforward operating system, keeping all the buttons in one (and the same) place, and make it REALLY ergonomic, instead of some pile of dung created by a bunch of defectively-brained, drug-addled baboons that has to be kept locked up for its own safety??

Bill Gates! Yeah you!! A thousand monkeys on a thousand keyboards CANNOT write an operating system!!!:grumpy:

Thanks Charlie, oh for the heady days of XP when my computer belonged to me rather than Microsoft. Hopefully I can ditch it soon

I follow these things daily and have never seen a reference to a common problem of users being locked out of their user accounts and the computer being taken over because of some problem with the operating system as opposed to operator error, virus or something similar nor have I seen any reports in the general or computer media of such a problem. Do you have a link to any reports of this “common” issue?

No wish whatsoever to have a discussion about it, but if you have a genuine interest, here are a few links, and a simple Google search will get you pages more on the same subject:

Glad you responded Jack that post didn't set well with me either but I didn't respond because I didn't want to get in trouble nor did I want to turn the lounge into Whine and Cheese.

You're a gentleman Randy

Based on your links it appears you had a corrupt profile issue. This can happen as a result of hardware issues, RAM problems, disk issues, bad software, power issues on shutdown or startup or other similar things but it is generally not a common problem relating to the operating system itself. I would have been pleased to have sent you links on how to repair or recover from a corrupt profile but your original post did not mention that as the specific issue. In any event, I hope you get it sorted out.

Thank you for your offer of assistance. I understand the reason for the problem.

Go Charlie! why don't tell us what you really think? ho ho ho aher ...oh oh I just looked and discovered that I too am using Windups 10(home) yipes.
Its a pretty simple fix- when it starts to go slower than a wet week I threaten to punch it in the guts and sling it out of the real window onto to the concrete driveway below. Seems to work most of the time.
failing that I whisper to it that I am going to switch it off and move to the other PC in SWMBOs sewing room. It soon falls back into line. That and ringing the computer guy who remotes in and fixes it -this seems to work best because he sends his invoice via email.:D.

Not sure how this "yearly sale" bs works anymore.
We have a chain of outdoor stores called mountain designs- they have redefined the word "sale" to mean anything being sold at any given time is "on sale" its basically endless.
Their stock is on sale one week and never returned to full price by the commencement of next weeks sale...They aren't reducing the price incrementally with the start of each new sale which would logically lead to everything being free at some point. Therefore the word "sale" in relation to reduced pricing no longer has any meaning. Its a shop and it sells stuff- that's it.

Meakuicious say -"its not a bargain if you don't need it".

I was deeply saddened reading the eyewitness accounts and seeing pictures last night. My wife and I spent a week in Wears Valley for our honeymoon in April 2015, and the beautiful of the Smoky Mountains made a lasting impression. They are in my thoughts, and I hope that we can make it back as soon as they get back on their feet.

We live an hour away from Gatlinburg and have been going there often for years. We were last there in September and although it is definitely a tourist town we have a lot of memories of wonderful times with both our children and grandchildren. We bought a timeshare there back in the early 80's and it's been paid off for years so we have been staying there for 30 some years. We just found out it was destroyed. Three people have been confirmed dead and others are unaccounted for. Who ever started this fire should be charged with murder as well as arson.

Randy - that's really really awful news. I'm sorry for those poor people and also sorry you have lost your holiday spot my friend.
