"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

So last night I was sitting at my computer and suddenly the thought jumped into my head - it's been more than 20 years since I've had a full size SAK. After a bit of searching around online, I ordered myself a Deluxe Tinker. It's funny, but I actually had two swiss champs at one time. I had bought them when I was posted in Germany. One for my dad, and one for me. Sadly, they were left behind in a box, with all his other traditional knives and pipes, when I was divorced many years ago. It makes me sad thinking about the one that was my dad's. He passed away some time ago and I wish I still had his. Ah, the musings of time. Just felt like sharing.

Cheers to Gus and Elliot. I, for one, am truly enjoying this forum. It really does feel like I'm sitting around with a group of old friends. Even though I am new to this forum, this is how I feel. Thank you!

Yep, agree with every bit of what you said, John.

Thanks donn, for the wonderful Sheffield pictures.
Nice pics, donn. Looks like a great display of knives.
Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Your welcome guys. I should of taken a photo of the display case in the museum shop which contained some really nice A.Wright knives.

Which day were you there Donn? I was there on the Thursday before the beer festival began, visiting Stan Shaw. That display has been there a while now, 'Sheffield Collectable Knives' is something the Eggington Group are doing, they have a separate web site for it. Hope you had a good visit

I was also there on the Thursday and had a very good time thank you, which continued in the Kelham Island Tavern after as well :)

It should be here tomorrow. I know it's only a $40 knife, but I'm still kind of excited. :)

No reason why you shouldn't be. :)

I have a few knives that are more expensive, but the ones I carry the most often, get the most enjoyment from, and, frankly, would be the most reluctant to part with were all in that ballpark or less.

I hope the delivery is on schedule and you enjoy your new Swiss marvel. :)

Thought I'd share an interesting anecdote that requires this quote;

~snip~

I like the Case teardrops, pew's suggestion. They come in different scales and Case recently released the 6.5 stag bone and readily available.

~snip~

I expect this is either a typo or an auto-correction function that has inadvertently changed my username from 'pmew' to 'pew'. This tickles me a little because my username is my initials; PMEW, but it nearly wasn't.

My father (now retired) is a minister, and when I was born my mother gave me her father's name as my Christian name, my father gave me his father's name for a middle name and the family surname came last of course. However after a few days my grandfather who had donated me his own name pointed out to my parents that the son of a minister whose initials spelled PEW, was perhaps ill advised and so he saved me several years of bullying with the inclusion of a second middle name. My grandfather was the kindest, wisest and most gentle man I have ever known. :)

Phew! :D
Swmbo went from JAR to JAM when she married me.
Whats the latest with Wee One Paul ?I was thinking ablut you the other day.Fingers still crossed.

I get a smile when I see folks initials that are a bit funny as my wife's maiden name's initials were D.A.M. I'm sure her parents didn't think of what that spelled when they named her.:D

Looks ok thanks Jon :)

We met one of the midwifes again today and she thought everything was OK - a week of enforced relaxation seems to have helped

Those Wright knives must be selling well, there was only two left when I was at the museum yesterday :) What a shame to have missed you Donn, I was in the Fat Cat across the road!

Good story Paul, it's incredible how many parents don't think of these things! :D

Hope it's plain sailing from here on in Paul

I had a nice visit with Stan Shaw yesterday, and took a few snaps in his workshop, which I'll post in due course. While going through them just now, I was struck by this selection of archaic tools - A burnisher, two-parser bits, and a thread.

Paul I just dont get it .Relaxation is a religion to me personally.
So glad to hear.
Jack suddenly Im reminded of a Two Ronnies shopkeeper sketch -I think it might be the parser bits :D.

I'm sure there were some fork handles somewhere in the museum :D

All this talk of SAKs has made me want to primp my feathers and show off what is possibly my greatest knife deal ever.
It bears the hallmarks of what we Aussies love the most.
*semi illegal
*bargain price from a dude who had no idea of its true value
*its big ( a quick internet search of "big things in australia" will surely lead you to the big pineapple ,the big banana, the big prawn ,etc tourist landmarks which grow ever more obscure the further away from civilisation one travels)
*its a man cave treasure.
I picked it up for $30AUD- full of dead moths and not working.
BEHOLD..!

My mate Dozy fixed it. The man is a genius.

Love it! I saw one of those displays at a garage sale once. The seller was asking $200. It was cool, but not $200 cool.

I picked it up down the south coast in an old huntin, fishin, knives n toy shop that has been there for many years in a little old town called Milton.
The display was shoved up on top of a cupboard out of reach of all but moths and spiders. The display box was on the counter and had ...huuulllp, bleeerrck, hulp hulp Bratz Dolls in it . IN a SAK display!!
sacrilege or what?
When the guy said 30bux in answer to my question I literally shoved my CC into his machine before he could draw breath. If he'd said 50 I would have ummed and aahed ,if he'd said 100 I would said no thanks.
I'm scampering back to the car and my mates who were waiting for me with my my preciousss clutched firmly to my breast. Look what I got. Their eyes rolling -meako you idiot whaddya need that for?.
I did a quick ebay search and discovered that one traded in 2009 for 250USD -which makes it a pretty good deal for around 21USD today.
It was a bit knackered inside -belts rods and cams bit too mechanical for me to fix. I searched for them and got in touch with a Swiss VIC dealer who told me it has to be sent back because they remain the property of Victorinox and it should not have been sold to a member of the general public.yeah right-that might be what you the Swiss do and who am I to criticise? but its not the Australian way.
I can't write what my response to that was but I had to laugh. I should out of interest get an estimate of how much it would cost me to send it to Switzerland-tipping a bit more than 30AUD.
So in much the same way that milk crates and wooden pallets remain the property bla bla bla- it is now mine miiine I tell you.
There was also a slightly newer looking one on the bay in Victoria asking 699AUD.

John you should have pounced at the garage sale mate.
cheers.

Perhaps. It was pretty beat up, though. Instead, at the same garage sale, I bought a 150 year old silver bar mold. The guy was using it as a doorstop. I paid $10 for it. Have I mentioned I'm a sucker for antiques?
