"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That's terrible Randy, very sorry my friend, for you and everyone affected :(

Hope you feel better soon John

That's a shame Randy. Doesn't Blues live in that general area - meaning maybe a 75-mile radius.

Those fires are always terrible. We had a big one called the Lake Fire that started in Lake County Oregon a couple of years ago that burned from Oregon, over the CA border and burned south 37-miles to about 4-miles from our house before it was brought under control.

What PO's me is that many of these fires are purposely set.

We live an hour away from Gatlinburg and have been going there often for years. We were last there in September and although it is definitely a tourist town we have a lot of memories of wonderful times with both our children and grandchildren. We bought a timeshare there back in the early 80's and it's been paid off for years so we have been staying there for 30 some years. We just found out it was destroyed. Three people have been confirmed dead and others are unaccounted for. Who ever started this fire should be charged with murder as well as arson.

That's horrible news, Randy. So sorry for your lost property, but at least you're safe.

we all have season passes for dolly wood,my daughter and her husband had plans to go there with friends this weekend, sorry for your loss randy, but you and your family are lucky you all were not up there.

Randy, I'm sorry to hear about your loss of property. My prayers too all who have been affected by the fires. If it was arson I hope they catch and prosecute the arsonists to the full extent of the law.

I am very sorry to hear the news Randy, thats very sad! We lost our business to fire and i know what it feels like.

All the best to you

Paul

Thanks guy's but really it was only a timeshare if memory serves me correctly we only paid around $10,000 for it and got over 30 years of use out of it. I will however miss being able to rent a really nice 2 bedroom condo with great amenities for $50 a night when it wasn't one of our weeks.
I just hate to see those that lost everything and so sorry for those that lost their lives and their families. I just read where the death toll is up to 7.

Terrible news, Randy!
Deliberately set fires - - that's terrorism!!

Hate to hear that Randy. I am over in West TN and my wife and I were just visiting there two weeks ago. I'm afraid the cabin we stayed in was probably lost from the fire as well from what I've read of the surrounding area. It's terrible and it will change the look of the most visited national park in the US for many years.

There is a little mountain town about 65 miles west of where I live called Bryson City. It's claim to fame is the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad that operates out of that little town. They feature sight seeing excursions through the mountains on a steam powered train that is absolutely top notch.
My wife and I have been on several of their trips including Autumn "leaf looking" trips and also great evening dinning trips. For the last few years they have featured a "Polar Express" trip during the holiday season with a final stop in the North Pole featuring of course Santa Claus.
My daughter and son-in-law took their girls 6 and 9 years old. THE girls have called their grandmommy and I 5 times this morning telling us of their adventure aboard the Polar Express. Here's a link to them if you would like to check it out.

MOST. are deliberate and MANY are accidental/started by idiots. That pretty much accounts for all but a minor percentage that start naturally.

I'm sorry, Randy. Poor people who lost their lives in the fire, that's just terrible.

Slovenia is home to the original Karst area, or Kras as we call it. It's a beautiful plateau with numerous caves and other natural phenomenons that occur due to the limestone. In many places there's lots of woods and the area is often difficult to access. For the past few years some genious had the briliant idea of setting fires in the woods during the summer. Because of the limestone water drains underground very quickly, which makes the ground very dry and fires spread rapidly. Our firefighters had great trouble of getting thoe bushfires under control, great damage for the environment as well.

Creating a thread today, I thought of something. I never "sign" my posts, unless I create a new thread and because my name (Žan) is probably a small enigma for many people here, I use the French version of it - Jean. But in English Jean is a female name, oposed to mine, which is just a variation of the English name John. I don't sign here as John since there's already a lot of members with that name. But I've been wondering if anyone thought I was a woman, judging by the name ... :D

I had an astonishing phone call from a UK outdoor clothing manufacturer earlier. For several years, they used a quote from me in their advertising, relating to the supposed 'no quibble' lifetime guarantee they offered to fix any manufacturing defects free of charge and indefinitely. After contacting them first, I recently returned one of their garments which had a manufacturing defect. The cheeky so-and-so's tried to charge me (and charge me quite a lot I think) for the repair!! :grumpy:
