"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Good job Mr Paul & wife :D

Especially after that anxious time not long back :) I've always got the bottle out..;) Before dinner it was Hayman's Old Tom Gin and during the meal a nice Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa.

She's nicely swaddled for the Wild Isles

Regards, Will

I want to write a bit about gifting knives and the great satisfaction you get from doing it.

First I must say I have saw this practiced more here on the porch than anywhere I've ever been associated with. The generosity, kindness and friendship found here is truly the stuff we often call legendary.

We read of a lot of the gifts given here but there are many many more that are never published. A good example was I was unable to attend the rendezvous this year but shortly afterwards I received a package from Jack (Mrknife) with 3 GEC knife slips, 2 H20 fixed blades a bunch of various GEC buttons. This type thing goes on here all all the time.

Speaking of Jack he has been a real friend to me. I think Jack will really enjoy his Christmas present which may not be a knife and may be a bit after Christmas before he receives it. :D

After the first of the year I want to host another GAW after that I will have to stop gifting knives for awhile. I have given close to 50 knives away in the last 2 or 3 months and am going to have to slow down and start building back up a bit. But I can promise you that I will be back to sending knives out to unsuspecting members as soon as I can.

You folks here on the porch have taught me how wonderful it feels to reach out to someone with a gift of friendship with no strings attached. And what a blessing (no other word for it) to receive a gift from someone just because they were thinking about you and cared enough to send it.

Enough of the ramblings of an old man, keep caring for each other, keep giving to each other and may you all have a Merry Christmas.

Nice post Randy :) As you say, there are lots of acts of kindness quietly going on here all the time :) Great to read of your friendship with Jack, we have some of the very best people here :)

Ain't she Sweet!!??!!
Congratulations to you and the Missus, Paul. I'm so glad everyone is fine and good!

As a victim of your generosity, Randy, may I return your Merry Christmas!!
I hope we all can enjoy this great place for many years to come!

No, I'm Spartacus! No wait, I'm not Spartacus, I'm daddy again.

Here's wee Molly. Brand new this afternoon. Mum and Baby are both fine - I'm so proud.

Congratulations! Very happy for you!

It's been a year since I lost my German Shepherd "Scout" and retired as a dog trainer. Donna and I have moved into a 70 year old house recently that we've been fixing up, but she's been saying I need to get another dog to complete our home. The past few nights after work I've been looking at Australian Shepherds, but I just kept finding reasons not to call on them.

Then I stumbled on to an add in the paper for English Shepherd puppies. I can't explain it, but it just kept pulling at me. I knew nothing about them, they were in a community I've had bad experiences in, and I just wasn't ready. However, it just kept pulling out me. Donna thinks it's Scout telling me it's time to get another dog.

So this morning I drove two hours north on a cold rainy Sunday to look at puppies. I should have known better since every dog I've acquired, I've acquired on a Sunday.

So here's what I found. A four week old male English Shepherd. Calm, curious, attentive, and very cuddly with Donna. He'll stay with his mom and dad four more weeks to strengthen his development in how to be a dog, then come home to us.

We've named him "Barlow".

Try saying, "Puppy" five times real fast in succession without breaking into a grin.

It can't be done, I tell ya.

Congrats on the pup. Barlow looks like a winner.

Between Molly and Barlow, the cuteness is high today. :D Congratulations, Gents.

I'm a dog person through and through. That is a great looking pup. Congratulations! Dogs bring so much to our lives. I can't imagine being without a dog in our family.

I've been trying to talk Ann into a new pup ever since we lost Odie 6 years ago. Maybe someday I know pictures of pups like Barlow sure make me want one. Barlow looks like a best buddy in the making. I do know if once again we take on a pup it will be one lucky little guy.

I've heard English shepherds are good dogs - congrats on the new family member.
I am curious to know what your experience with Aussies is that would put you off the breed, though, or was it just that the ones you were looking at didn't look "right enough"?

After a "simple" job of changing a few burnt out Christmas lights turned into four trips up on the roof and two trips to the hardware store, I was feeling a bit grumpy. But then I came back here and looked at that cute pup and am smiling again.

Congrats on the new family member. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of Barlow as he grows up.

Molly is a lovely name, but it's not too late to change it Paul! :D ;)

Hope you're getting some sleep mate :)
