It's been a year since I lost my German Shepherd "Scout" and retired as a dog trainer. Donna and I have moved into a 70 year old house recently that we've been fixing up, but she's been saying I need to get another dog to complete our home. The past few nights after work I've been looking at Australian Shepherds, but I just kept finding reasons not to call on them.

Then I stumbled on to an add in the paper for English Shepherd puppies. I can't explain it, but it just kept pulling at me. I knew nothing about them, they were in a community I've had bad experiences in, and I just wasn't ready. However, it just kept pulling out me. Donna thinks it's Scout telling me it's time to get another dog.

So this morning I drove two hours north on a cold rainy Sunday to look at puppies. I should have known better since every dog I've acquired, I've acquired on a Sunday.

So here's what I found. A four week old male English Shepherd. Calm, curious, attentive, and very cuddly with Donna. He'll stay with his mom and dad four more weeks to strengthen his development in how to be a dog, then come home to us.

We've named him "Barlow".

How could you take one look at that mug & not be in love! hope you have many years together

HEY hey hey hey hey Heeeey!:D
Aussies are people y'know.
Please refer to the dog breed as "kelpies" which is what we call them. I've never actually heard anyone say Australian shepherd till now.
But there y'go.
Then again I've never even heard of English Shepherds unless its an Olde Englishe Sheepe Dogge- the super furry ones.
Now I see -great looking dogs.
I worked at a house last week with a Blue Cattle Dog- she was the best. No one was game to even pat her because she lay there eyeing us. Didn't move all the while we were walking in and out . Then at lunch time became our bestest besty like evvah. I had a bag of chips (fries) and she walked up and tried to nudge them out of my grasp several times.I shoved her off but she kept coming back. We gave her a couple of chips and and some pats and said yer not getting any more- bugger off -which she did. Pretty cool dog.

Australian Shepherds are a totally different breed than the Kelpie dog.
they are actually strongly related to the English shepherd and border collie and were first bred in the USA in the 1800's
.......my Avatar is our current pup. (he's almost 5)

Right .Ta.
I kind of understand. Its an English breed originating in America and in typical form Australian dog breeders have laid claim to it.
About as Aussie as Russel Crowe and Crowded House.
We also have an Australian Bulldog - it's the British Bulldog with slightly longer legs.
Lets face it all dogs in this country originated elsewhere.
Cheers.:)

Please dont let that detract from the cuteness of noble young Barlow. I vote for Barlow as porch mascot. The pooch of the porch if you will.

The story I had is that the breed was developed by Australian and Basque sheep herders in Nevada and Idaho. Other than that, there is nothing Australian about them. Looks to me like an English shepherd is just an Aussie that has been allowed to keep its tail.:D

I remain astonished that such a small physical being...

... can take up so much psychic space(!).

Yes.
I've always been more of a cat person. I like dogs, and for some reason they love me, but I have no desire to have one of my own. It's my understanding that dogs thrive on routine, and if I wanted to have to be home at the same time every day, I'd get married. :D So I look forward to seeing pictures of Barlow as he grows up, and you can always give him a scratch behind the ears for me.

Sarah, I love the "Hero Pose." Like a tiny RinTinTin. :)

That's a very cute dog. I guess I'll need to have a few doggy treats in my pocket when I'm sitting on the porch.
