Dropped in an antique shop earlier this week during the lunch hour. I went in looking for the usual sharp stuff, but didn't see anything good. I found this in the back corner of the store though.
It's a cast iron skillet, specifically a Griswold No. 8. I have a couple of contemporary Lodge pieces, but this is my first antique. I've long wanted to try out an older skillet, but have never been able to find any locally until now. I paid more than I hoped to, but nothing unreasonable. The condition seems very good. The bottom is nice and flat, and there were only a few spots of rust. The shop owner and his loafer buddies shared the opinion that this skillet was never used. As I'm not old enough to remember Griswolds being sold in stores, I couldn't argue. The metal has a dull gray appearance unlike the black seen on a new Lodge. And there doesn't seem to be any old gunk to remove. I'm still going to pop it into the oven for a self-cleaning cycle. I'll follow that up with a good oiling and then back into the oven for a few hours of seasoning. Can't wait to start using it tomorrow to fry up a few rashers of bacon.
