"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks gents. I know we probably have a lot of Steelers fans, so good luck to youz guys as well. It's a good rivalry. And as an aside, I was talking to Paul Hilborn about last week's "controversy" surrounding Mike Tomlin's comments. I thought it was really ridiculous for the media to make such a big deal about that. It's all part of the game and nothing more than a good coach doing his job of firing up his team. But there will be some good matchups between team members. Looking forward to it.

Bob the media is what's wrong with a lot in the world today. It's not about news it's about ratings and those yayhoos get a hold of anything they sensationalize it and run it in the ground.

I have no problem with Tomlin's comments. Antonio Brown, however, is a product of his generation. What a _______. Doesn't anyone believe in keeping things private anymore?

I do wish Tomlin had stuck to his guns. As Bob said, it's all part of the game. Apologizing about it is insincere.

Dropped in an antique shop earlier this week during the lunch hour. I went in looking for the usual sharp stuff, but didn't see anything good. I found this in the back corner of the store though.

It's a cast iron skillet, specifically a Griswold No. 8. I have a couple of contemporary Lodge pieces, but this is my first antique. I've long wanted to try out an older skillet, but have never been able to find any locally until now. I paid more than I hoped to, but nothing unreasonable. The condition seems very good. The bottom is nice and flat, and there were only a few spots of rust. The shop owner and his loafer buddies shared the opinion that this skillet was never used. As I'm not old enough to remember Griswolds being sold in stores, I couldn't argue. The metal has a dull gray appearance unlike the black seen on a new Lodge. And there doesn't seem to be any old gunk to remove. I'm still going to pop it into the oven for a self-cleaning cycle. I'll follow that up with a good oiling and then back into the oven for a few hours of seasoning. Can't wait to start using it tomorrow to fry up a few rashers of bacon.

Those older cast iron pieces are the best! They used to use solid molds for the castings, whereas the new ones are cast in sand. That means the older ones will have a smoother surface, which, once seasoned, will be even more non-stick than a brand new pan. Great find!

I've been working on a new Lodge 10.5" in the oven lately, trying to build up a decent layer of seasoning. Looking forward to that first egg sliding off.

I agree with Bob, Good Luck to the Steelers fans today as well as Packers and Falcons fans:thumbup:

Both Bob and I agree that Mike Tomlin is a Class Act:thumbup:

I know all about diplomacy as Nanc is a LONG TIME Steelers fan.

Go Patriots;):thumbup::D

True true. The first thing I do when I get a newly cast one is bust out my grinder and flapper wheel to get it smooth. Then re-season it. Takes some time to get right but sure does get righter than not getting the casting smooth.

I had bacon from mine this morning,I have aother that we bake cornbread in,usually 4 days a week.i could not eat if I did not have my cast iron.

Not how I imagined my Sunday going... Packing the car to head to my brother's around 1:30 when we heard a crash. Thankfully, the tree didn't fall on the neighbor's house or our house and no one was out in the back yards. Haven't heard from the neighbor about his plans for clean up/fence repair, but I've got some knives and an old chainsaw that might get a workout on my side of the fence.

Actually the old Griswold and Wagner cast iron was also made in sand molds but with a finer sand and thinner molds. The pans were then milled and polished which is not done with modern cast iron. The mill marks are visible in the pan in vintage pieces.

Ah, good to know!

Bob, I'm very happy to hear that you are home.

Shawn, yikes! Glad no one was in its way.

And, all this cast iron talk is great! I have a few sizes of inexpensive newer ones that I use often. Someday I'll have to look for a vintage milled one. I'd really like to acquire a cast iron dutch oven and learn to cook with it in nestled in a bed of coals and topped off with coals on the lid. I've helped with that a couple of times and it was great fun.

Geez, Shawn. Lucky nobody hurt!

A couple of weeks ago someone sent me a PM and I asked for their shipping info but I have cleaned out my in and sent boxes resulting in losing this communication. I can't remember who it was or what it was about. I'm afraid I left the impression I would send them a knife and now don't know who it was. If it was you please PM me again. Thanks

Here's a thought Randy. Do you get an email when someone responds to a thread or PM's you on BF? I do. If so, you could search your email trash (maybe) and find the PM notice. At least that would tell you the username of the person who sent it.

Otherwise, if it's important I guess they will get back to you.

Randy, for future reference, you can download your PMs before deleting them

I have a new Lodge 6 quart camp Dutch oven, with all the accessories for it, sitting here in the house waiting for me to get my act together and season it and learn how to cook in it. My wife and I love to go camping, and we have a fire ring out back, so we really want to give it a try. I'll get to it soon.
