"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

We had one heck of a storm roll through where I live last night. Over 150,000 people without power (including me), they are saying it will take over a week to get everything restored. Neighbor's tree fell into my back yard - took down the power lines to our block as well as the line to my house. No phones, no Internet, no power. (posting this from work).

Just thought I'd share. Good news - no damage to the house or its occupants.

I made it, so Huzzah! to me.
I've never worried before about living till a certain time of day, but there's something extra solemn about the sixtieth birthday.
Now I need to come up with another mid-life crisis, to carry me to 120 years.

This is me, almost exactly 60 years ago:

I still sleep a lot.

Happy 60th Birthday Jer, and many happy returns my friend

Glad to hear you're all OK John, that sounds like one heck of a storm  Hope you can get everything fixed soon

Happy 60th jer, it just gets better after 60:(

jc57 jc57 sorry to hear of the complete outage. At least nobody injured. That used to happen at our house, until I installed a whole house generator. The power hasn't gone out since:(
;)

Yeah, a generator is one of those things you need for about 3-4 days, once every 10 years. The utility company says this is the 3rd worst city-wide damage in the history of the city. I remember the other 2 that were worse.

If it was just us and the one tree, they'd have it back on by Tuesday. But with 150,000 customers affected all over the city, they re estimating more than a week.

John Im glad to hear all is well. I slept through most of it so it must not have been that bad here.

Happy Birthday, Jer!

JC, I'm glad everyone is OK at your house.
(And I hope there wasn't too much food in the freezer.)

...
I do wish there was a 'dislike' button just as there is a 'like'.
...
I think that, for me, the "like" button is too impersonal (and probably lazy ), so I don't use it. And so far, I haven't paid attention to "likes" on my posts. On the other hand, I don't think my fragile psyche could handle the existence of a "dislike" button!

...
They took the last of the staples out of my hand yesterday and it sure make's typing much easier. If all goes well I am scheduled tone released June 6. The first two things I want to get when I get home is a home cooked meal and a #47 Viper. (Hee Hee)
Great news, Randy!!:thumbsup: I hope you continue to make rapid progress, Pilgrim! ;)

Big weekend here. My youngest son defended his dissertation this past week. We'll be at his PhD Hooding Ceremony today at Cornell U. It's my grandson's first birthday, my oldest son's 34th, and we have friends from Portland, Maine visiting. There will be a few parties....

Have a great weekend folks!
Congrats on all the milestones and the general "social whirl", Gary!

Some of the things I miss are the old search function (once you'd worked out how to use it, it was really good), the ability to download PMs, and the 'Groups' function. I don't like the new smarticons, most of them don't seem to work for me. Nor do I like the way posts are now quoted. And I preferred 'Friends' to 'Followed/Followers' ...
FWIW, I'm OK with the new BF software. When I first happened upon BF over 3 years ago, I spent my first 7 months or so just lurking as a guest, and had to learn a lot about using the software. Then there was even more to learn after I became a member! So, I sort of think of learning how to use software features as part of the BF experience! ;) I was certainly no expert with the old search function, and have been as successful with the new search as I ever was with the old. I DO miss the ability to download PMs/Conversations. Since I often use multi-quotes, perhaps to excess, I don't object too much to the compressed form used for quoted posts; it addresses complaints that individuals sometimes addressed toward me about having to scroll through all sorts of photos that they'd seen before. (And "friend requests" used to have to be "approved"; is the "following" relationship unilateral, in that I can decide to follow/stalk someone without their permission?)

So . . .check it out folks!
Our good friend Lyle is getting, or got (not sure of the time), MARRIED today!!:)
...
Congrats to Lyle and his new bride!

Happy 60th, Jer!!:cool: Cool photo! Is the hair situation pretty much the same now as then?

Glad your people and property are undamaged, John. I hope services get restored ASAP!

Been in Califironia for almost 2 months going to the VA in Palo Alto. Be staying at Defenders Lodge there for about two more months. Doing some whittling , miss this forum.
Best reguards, Tom

Our best wishes for a speedy healing, Tom.

Mend soon, Skyhorse.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, guys.

5KQS, I too am glad there's no quick and easy "dislike" button. I'm trying to remember to use the "like" button: it's a good option for when all you have to say is, "I like that".

As for my hair, I try to keep it fluffy because it's so thin. On the plus side, if I get in a fight on a sunny day, I can blind my assailants with the dazzling reflectivity of my tonsure zone.
I should practice that more.

Jer, this made me laugh out loud in the kitchen, drawing "there-he-goes-again" looks from my wife and her 3 dogs! :D
I just noticed that congrats are also in order for your hitting the 4K posts milestone! Did you orchestrate the simultaneous occurrence of 4000 posts and 60 years?? ;)

Happy 60TH SP! I'm about 6 months behind you, and been thinking about it some. If the big 60 is getting too you, look on the bright side: 60 has come and gone and you've started you're 61st year on this rock of ours.;)

Gaaah.
Ive been trying to be positive about the new format but the rampant cynic in me is pounding on the door.
I just "liked" the fact that jc57 got hit by a massive storm.
Did we pick up the facebook virus or something?

We needed to completely clean out the fridge anyway.

Plus now I get to see what it is like trying to use a phone for everything.
