"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Jack I just read the "Consultation on new legislation on offensive and dangerous weapons" that you posted a link. to and it made me a little sick to my stomach. I sure hope this does not pass.

One of my favorite parts of our area is the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a section of it called the Linn Cove Viaduct about 90 miles from where I live. I came across these pictures of it today and thought I would share them. This 1243-ft. concrete segmental bridge snakes around the slopes of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. It was completed in 1987 and was the last section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be finished.

That's impressive Randy, it looks like something from a James Bond or Steve McQueen film :) There are quite a few Victorian railway viaducts near where I live, and I always find them impressive. Here's a friend of ours with one ;)

That was the feeling I got too Randy. Sadly, the proposals are likely to pass through Parliament unopposed :(

A while back the subject of Sleep Apnea was discussed here. Well I am grateful to you guys, you've proven a heck of a lot more use than the lazy bum that calls himself my doctor. Based on what folks here said, after doing a little research, I realised I had virtually ALL the symptoms, and after insisting my doctor referred me to a specialist, it turns out I have the condition and can hopefully get some treatment.

For decades, I have also suffered with terrible pains, mainly in my legs, which keep me awake at night. My doctor has never shown a bit of interest in the problem, but thanks to my visit to the hospital, it turns out I have fibromyalgia. Again, I had ALL the symptoms, but the Quack missed it. I should have asked you guys

Oh man, I can't count the times we rode the motorcycles on the parkway. Leave Maryland and shoot down I81 and turn off to Gatlinburg. Spend the night in the park and pick up the parkway at Cherokee N.C. and start north. I think the Smokies are the most beautiful part of the U.S. and was my first pick to retire to.

But both of Karen's sisters were in Georgetown Texas, so Yee ha!:(

In the words of the late, great comedian George Carlin. " Somewhere out there is the worlds worst doctor. The scariest part is someone has an appointment with him tomorrow.":eek::D:D

I have put a lot of miles on motorcycles on the Parkway and have fished every inch of the trout waters in Cherokee. In fact my grandmother was born and raised in the Big Cove section of the Cherokee reservation. Many years ago there was a motel on Big Cove road where the entrance to the Job Corps is now. My grandfather who was the son of Irish immigrants was working as a logger there and that is where the company was housing the workers. My grandmother worked for the motel as a maid and they met there. My grandfather always said she was "the prettiest Indian girl on the reservation". They fell in love and were married she was 15 and he was 20 and they were together 64 years until my grandfathers death and she died 2 years latter. I remember going to family reunions when I was a kid and was scared to death at all the native people because my complexion and appearance is very much Caucasian and I just knew I would be scalped. I guess I had watched way to many westerns. :D:D

Fantastic story Randy. And don't fear, most scalps were made by "white" people... not by natives.
Fenimore Cooper's " Last of the Mohicans " is just the exact contrary of what happened in history...

I only made one attempt to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was in 1979. Hurricane David spoiled the view and the riding, with rain, wind and fog. We had a miserable ride from Gatlinburg to Asheville before giving up and riding in the rain most of the way back to Minnesota. Since then, I have confined my moto touring to west of the Mississippi.

Thanks for the eloquent and supportive post Carl

After all they have had to go through over recent decades, the last thing the few remaining Sheffield cutlery firms need is to be effectively barred from the internet. With all the brick and mortar cutlery shops virtually gone, online trading is obviously important to them, and the businesses they supply, as it is to most traders these days. This might be the final nail in the coffin :(
They might have to move to Thiers.

Thank you. I think Dad brought it in the early 60s, back from Inezgane. I was not allowed to touch it of course!

Chui-888 drew my attention to this document yesterday - Proposals for changes in the UK knife laws - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa...nsive_and_Dangerous_Weapons-Consultation-.pdf

Not the place for political commentary, but I'm posting this for the information of our other UK members, and those visiting the UK - Your Svord Peasant could be set to be reclassified as an illegal 'flick knife', you may no longer be able to purchase knives online, and knives in your private collection are in danger of being seized. Read it and weep! :(
The real question here, is:
What the heck is a "zombie knife"???
