"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I know there's question of whether the Olympics are still relevant in the current time, but I really enjoy them. Happy 23rd Winter Olympiad everyone!
Same here, I really enjoy watching the Olympics.
Watching the Olympics is OK, but I find watching my wife and daughter watching the Olympics far more interesting and entertaining! :p:D

Randy, reading your post put a big smile on my face. So glad you are in a safe, comfortable place. It sounds (optimistically) that things are starting to look up for you somewhat, so for that I am so glad.

And you, always the generous one, want to host a giveaway? That is so thoughtful of you to think of others. I'm sure I couldn't talk you out of it, but personally I'd just have you hang on to the money or the knife, and make sure you are taking care of yourself. You've been through so much in the past recent months, and just having you back posting on the forum is enough of a "giveaway" gift. You've been so generous and thoughtful of others, and all that everyone did for you was just returning the kindness and generosity. That's what we do on "The Porch".
Very well-put, Glenn!:thumbsup: Randy, you know Glenn knows what he's doing when it comes to knives, so consider his advice! ;)

I dug my camera out and thought I'd post some pictures. The first 3 are the remains of my knife collection the rest are of my new home.

Thanks for the photos, Randy; your new place is looking very livable!!:cool::thumbsup::thumbsup: I'm glad to see you could hang onto some of your guitars.:thumbsup::) Looking forward to your participation here on The Porch again; a porch kind of sags when one of its pillars is missing!

Ha! I know what you mean. I never cared for daytime soap operas, but I loved watching my grandmother watch them. She'd shake her head and "tsk-tsk" in disapproval at the scandalous behavior, then tune in the next day for more.

Divorce Court and Wrestling back in the 60's for my grandmother, she got mad at me when I told her they were fake.

.......not real, of course the wrestling was real..! ;)

I recall the days of Mick McManus (above), Big Daddy, Haystack, Pallo etc..........brilliant entertainment on a Saturday afternoon :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Sorry my friend, it was a typo!

Yes fantastic! :D  Have you ever read Simon Garfield's excellent book on the phenomena?

Oh! I loved wrestling (catch in French). There was the White Angel (the Good) and the Béthune's Executionerl (the Bad) and Chéri-Bibi (the Ugly)! Great moments of fun with a period commentary.

Excellent JP, what a treat :)

Blimey Jack Black Jack Black is that kendo Nagasaki on the cover of that book? In the village i grew up in, there was a small row of old peoples bungalows. On Saturday afternoon in the summer when the doors were open, the language from those old folks shouting at the wrestling on the telly was shocking!!

It is indeed! :D I read the book when it first came out, and the first edition had Peter Blake's portrait of him on the front cover : https://www.theguardian.com/observer/osm/story/0,6903,562562,00.html
I think old folks were the biggest 'grapple fans', some old ladies who lived near me as a kid went every week, and apparently wrestlers were always being injured by them, some even used their hat-pins!

Ive checked the rule book JB.
Pretty sure headbutts to the midriff whilst pinning the ref to the turnbuckle are illegal.

That was a typo Christian! :D

It was huge in Australia when I was a kid.
There was always the good guys and the bad guys.
These blokes didnt stuff around with fancy diets or abs or any of that either. They didnt need to.
They were barging ,burly, buffaloes of men.
They smoked and drank and ate meat pies .

LOL! Apparently, in wrestling speak (here at least), they were called the 'Blueye' and the 'Heel'! They got changed in the toilets, and paid a fiver a bout too! :D

Lol...

I admit to watching the WWF when I was younger. Big fan too, until it started to take on a soap opera feel. Stopped following it around the time I discovered girls, but I found that like many here, I enjoy watching others (nephews mostly) watch it.

The British wrestling of the 1960's and 70's was very different to the WWF of today, but there were lots of funny characters, and of course they all had a gimmick. There was even a Mohawk (his son still lives here, and has a broad Yorkshire accent)

I miss The Crusher and Mad Dog Vachon.

Great stuff! :D

My father was always very dismissive of the TV wrestling when I was a kid. It was shown on Saturday afternoons here, and he would turn the TV over to the other TV channel, where they were showing that days football results live - by teleprinter! It was not exactly riveting stuff! o_O

for the squeamish, look away!
