And they had a boat moored on the Ouse. I remember a few years ago they used to have a Viking boat race but seemed to of given up doing that now.

Excellent pics Donn  I sometimes think the festival was better in the past, in 2015 there didn't seem to be much to it, and the following year rotten weather seemed to put a lot of people off. The trading areas were reduced this year, the yurt in particular was pretty small. I usually pick up a few odd and ends, but there was virtually nothing I was interested in buying this year. The knives generally look like rubbish too. I'd like to go to the evening finale sometime, but there's always a shortage of accommodation in York.

I know what you mean Jack. In the past there seemed to be more effort made.
Both the Guildhall and the Merchant Adventurers Hall used to be full of traders. I know both buildings are medieval but you couldn't get a better ambience. Now it's just two tatty tents shoehorned into a non-descript part of the city centre.
They also used to do a Viking muster in Museum gardens and a daytime battle re-enactment at the Eye of York, both of which are no more :(

Yes, a bit poor Donn :( It could be that they have increased the prices for traders to stand because I noticed that there was an 'independent artisan market' inside Holy Trinity Church on Goodramgate. Nice to see inside the ancient church, but the half dozen small stalls certainly weren't of interest to me :(

The Coppergate 'encampment' was particularly poor this year I thought :(

Yes I was walking down Goodramgate and saw that advertised! I love Holy Trinity church; I was told once that that may be the site of the original wooden Anglo-Saxon Minster, no trace of which has ever been found.
I didn't go in though as I wasn't just there just for the Vikings. I was visiting mates (and associated babies) and I'd also been to the National Railway Museum to see the Soyuz capsule that Major Tim Peake returned to Earth in after his mission to the ISS. And I just love spaceships!

Theres been a great deal of comment about York Markets over the past few years; essentially focused on what traders have to pay to set up a stall. Both on the regular market and the specialist markets. From what I understand City of York Council and the company that runs the market; "Make It York", have ruined it (especially the monthly Farmers Market). The same old story of greed, greed and more greed :rolleyes:St' Nicholas Fayre (York's Christmas Market) is a shadow of it's former self, especially when you compare it to what Lincoln and Durham achieve.
Viking Festival is run by the Jorvik Centre I think, but if CYC has any sort of involvement in it then that would be the reason why it's not as good as it once was.

Mrknife I'm sure NYC has enough fantastic events going on to keep anyone busy :D:thumbsup: I was thinking of seeing NYC next year and my to-do list would take a year to get through
But your right a Happy Chinese New Year to any Chinese members on the forum or anyone of Chinese descent. I have Chinese relatives and they sometimes make their way to London Chinatown (centred around Wardour St') for the celebrations. The cities of Manchester and Liverpool have huge Chinese population (second only to San Francisco) and they always celebrate in style . If I hadn't been to York this weekend I'd of gone to this instead.

I have finally gotten everything done in my apartment that I'm going to do except for an antique China Hutch that belonged to my grandmother I'll move in this week. Still gave a bunch of stuff I have to do something with. I have a Mapex drum kit and a 100 ft Rapco 20 channel 4 return stage snake I have sold tomorrow. You sure take a loss on used musical stuff the drums with cymbals new about $1800 I sold for $400 and the snake about $350 new now $100. Oh well what you gonna do. Took a quick shot of my living room it's kind of like a mancave on display guitars, antique metal cars knives display and band pictures with no one to complain about it.:D:D

Looking good Randy

- the beach, north of Mombasa, where I went back to exactly two years ago and swum out to sea with the remains of my Mum's ashes..........and let them go in the current.

It was probably this beach, or one nearby, where my Mum and Dad 'made' me........ She'd have approved!

I know this may sound philosophical but I think we're drawn to the water because of evolutionary forces or because of our physical make up. Not only do I think your Mum would approve but as I get closer I wonder about my place.
Of course you can use my ramblings as your signature line. It will put a smile on my face when I see it.

- thank you!

I was born about 100yds form the Indian Ocean in Mombasa.........the sound of the sea does wonders to me....to most of us I think, yes.

Twenty two years later I went to live and work 1000miles due east of Mombasa, right here, right on the beach...
