"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I took my kids and my nieces on a little nature walk this morning. We saw three deer and three hares (didn't get pics of those) and a little triplet of caterpillars munching on some grass, but the highlight was when my youngest son (4 yrs. old) turned over a little rock that was only about four inches in diameter to find. . .a rattlesnake! It was a baby diamondback, and when I nudged it with a stick to see how big it was, I could only spot two rattles. It surprised me to be under such a small rock, and I'm glad he didn't strike at my son, whom I snatched away immediately. What a cool walk, though. The nieces and my daughter did NOT like the snake, but my boys thought it was cool, of course.

Wow! The kids will certainly remember that adventure Joshua! What a great day :) Glad your Lambsfoot was able to tag along ;)

Without a point of reference that rattlesnake looks plenty big to me! Sounds like a great outing all around.

Yeah, I got as close a picture as I could with the zoom on my phone camera. He was pretty long (maybe 2.5 - 3 ft.), but only about an inch or so thick, from what I could tell. Two of the boys wanted to go back, but the girls were ready to go home :D:D:D

I got to reading the post I missed here and adding my 2 cents I forgot to post what I wanted to post here this morning.

I woke up at about 7:00 this morning everything went as usual I got up, started the coffee, jumped in the shower went back into the bedroom to put on my clothes. Now the floors in my apt are tile and my feet were a bit wet from the shower so I started into the bedroom my feet slid in opposite directions and almost instantly I was laying in the floor starring at the ceiling. Didn't realize I could still do a split but I can. Bruised my hip and my right knee and thigh are swollen almost 3 times their normal size and I feel like I've been in a fight with a gang of Ninjas. Yep the old man busted his A#$ good this morning and I sure hope this isn't just a taste of what's in store for me this week.:eek::eek:

Sorry to hear about your fall, Randy! Hope you’re feeling better!

I hate how you can be on the ground before you know you're slipping.

Ain’t that the truth. I slipped on some ice in a parking lot earlier this year and was on my back before I knew what was happening. Got my bell rung pretty good, too. Kinda scary when you think about what could happen in that sort of situation (I know J.B. Hunt, founder of the Arkansas-based trucking company, died from injuries sustained after slipping on ice and hitting his head.)

I haven’t been here around as much as I’d like over the last couple weeks, mainly because we closed on a house here in MN at the end of last month, and I’ve spent most of my free time since then working on some projects and slowly getting our stuff moved in. In addition to some painting a few walls and a lot of wood trim, my father-in-law and I replaced a two windows, two toilets, several light fixtures and all the shelving in the closets; we also epoxy-coated the garage floor and buried some corrugated pipe to displace the water from the downspouts away from the house. Now that we’re done with all that, we’ve been slowly moving stuff into the house, and we’re just about finished there, as well. Last night I moved the final big item up the the new house (thought I'd save the largest for last). :D

We’re excited to finally feel settled here in Minnesota; the rental house we had worked out great, but was smaller than what we really needed.

I’m also looking forward to diving back into things around here and catching up on some of my favorite threads. I owe Jack Black Jack Black a few photos of this year’s Guardians knives in the Lambsfoot thread, and have a couple new GEC #15’s that I’ve hardly had a chance to CE and CF. :D

Good to see you on The Porch again, Barrett! :) Congrats on getting moved into your new house!:cool::thumbsup:
The Checker looks right at home; did you convert it to some kind of hybrid electric vehicle?? Looks like you have it plugged into a wall outlet! :D:D

Good to see you back Barrett, you have been missed, and not for the first time, I found myself thinking of you earlier. I'm glad to hear things are going well there, and you're just about finished (cool pic ) :) Hope you'll be very happy in your new home my friend

Looking forward to seeing those Lambsfoot pics too! ;)

If it's plugged in it could be an engine warmer (likely needed in Minnesota)

All cars here have engine/coolant warmers, many have an internal heater as well which makes life bearable in the Arctic. The real drag is having to have two sets of tyres, winter/summer.

I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the Checker Marathon around town.

... or a battery tender....

Thanks, guys! Fodderwing Fodderwing is right, the Checker is plugged into a battery tender (although I have considered a full-electric conversion). :D

Jeez, it’s been years since I plugged a car in at night so it would start in the morning. Oil pan heaters, tank heaters, even a trouble light, anything to warm it up under there. Fuel injection and 5W-30 oil have pretty much put an end to the need for that around here.

I can see the battery tender if the car is not going to be driven every day, and you are going to want to keep that car off the streets during salt season, or it won’t last long around here.

That's interesting Henry. Oddly enough, not a lot of people here have a heated garage as many people live in blocks in towns and cars are outside most of the time. If I visit somewhere without a heated garage I always plug in using a 2 hr timer, hate scraping snow&frost off windows. I use 0-20 or 0-30 oil in my current car and yes it will start in -30c without pre heating but it doesn't like it. Plus, warming the car not only clears windows it uses a lot less fuel, cuts pollution and engine wear.
Worst thing is when a car's been in the warm, the temp drops to -10c or worse and then the rubber seals round the doors freeze hard and you can rip them up trying to get in!

Hurrah for summer! It's light 20 hours a day here now

Hey Will old trick for the sticky weather stripping. Take pure Glycerin & mix in Talcum powder, paint the weather stripping with the mixture.
I t will still get hard & brittle but won't stick to the metal door frame:thumbsup:

Good to know. This time of year, I'm more worried about the tires melting into the asphalt. :D:p

A silicone lubricant will help with the sticky doors. So will a knife (I know, it’s knife abuse). I have a nice, stout Hultafors that I don’t mind using, except that is is usually inside the vehicle. The screwdriver blade on my SAK will usually do the trick, unless we have had a freezing rain, in which case I may have to resort to something stouter.
