Carothers and Guns

When we get older we return to yourself. We can discuss about effectivity , and many other things, but now, I’m thinking about level of engineering and gunsmith experience which made it.
Nice acquisition, congrats and enjoy!

Not a great pic but I'm pretty pleased with this acquisition.

Now to decide on a holster, order some new sights and get some speed loaders for this beast. I'm a happy camper.

That combo is sexy AF. Well done, Dylan.

I like that one Hammer67 Hammer67 ! Their smooth cylinder models are cool looking.

Thanks. I've held out for years hoping S&W would finally ditch that infernal lock and swore I'd never buy one, but this one made me crumble. And aside from the lock (which is going to get a plug/delete kit installed) I have to say that it is a very well built revolver. It feels and handles great.

New toy Tuesday! Actually got the Staccato last week but new toy Tuesday sounded better. Plus daughters car broke down and wife wants to get her a new one. Probably selling some Busse knives and trying to hold onto all my CPK’s. Glad it didn’t break down before I got the Staccato P:)

All kidding aside, the safety advances in the newer vehicles are pretty astounding. Sacrificing a few Busse’s to have your daughter in a safe/reliable vehicle is not even a question. Now the CPK’s….. 🤣

The shooters calling that locks Klinton hole. Lol.
I’m changed the cylinder on my 627-5 for unfluted one. I’m calmed that I can’t clean the carbon spots the 627pc blasted finish. S&W replace it , install plus aligned it for like a $100 or something like that . It was 7 years ago. Much more better for clean and looks beautiful-)
Ps. Found the original picture

Shot the new 686 today. Very smooth trigger and the double action wasn't a big deal at all. Sights were already dialed in. Shooting .38 target ammo with it was a pleasure. But those Underwood .357 Magnum 158gr XTPs were 🔥!!

Nice!

I think I may need to trade my 460XVR for a 686+ 4 inch barrel or maybe a 629/m29 w/6 inch barrel. I think I'd get more use out of 357mag or 44 mag rather than the 460mag/454 casull/45lc.

Anyone have any experience with S&W L frame 44 mags? Seems like the lighter gun would be punishing. Not sure I like only having 5 rounds either.

Yup - those are from 5-Star. I already had them for my GP100 and they work perfectly for the 686 Plus as well.
BTW, anyone else remember scenes from old Westerns, where one guy goes, "You're empty. You didn't count your shots, but you fired 6".

The 7 and 8 shot revolvers nowadays, always bring a smile when I think of those old scenes.

Come to think of it, I don't remember what it was anymore, but there was a (black and white?) show/movie where the protagonist beats the bad guy at the end, because he had a special 7-shot revolver that no one knew about. The bad guy pulls that "You're empty/out" line, as the protagonist calmly listens to him, then goes BANG 😅

I do not have experience with the L frame .44 but have shot many rounds through light .44’s. I mostly carry a snub 629 when doing property chores and it lets you know when it goes off for sure. I used to carry and shoot a 329PD and it is a joy to carry but not so much to shoot. After shooting it some, I switched to Buffalo Bore .44 mag hard cast ‘low recoil’ which still have respectable ballistics/penetration but WAY more comfortable to shoot.
My S&W AirLite scandium 2” .357 has serious muzzle snap.

Depending on your plans for the gun, I think you will have more opportunity to carry and use a .357 or .44- they are simply great rounds for many circumstances but full disclosure I am biased! 🤣

Good luck with your search.

I shot a Scandium .44 Mag once. I could barely get through one cylinder and couldn't wait to hand it back to the owner. That was the nastiest revolver I've ever shot.

While I like the fancy grips that came on this 686, I'm likely going to replace them with Hogue Tamers, like I do for all my magnum carry guns. They may not be pretty but they work really well.

Ugly but usable! Yes sir.

You brought one of the most iconic scenes of that type to mind…western location at least. ;)

I gots to know!
