Carothers and Guns

Been playing a bit with the XTEN, ordered a Sigmtech tungsten guide rod for it that uses 1911 recoil springs, 24lb definitely helps with Underwood hard cast recoil, and brass only throws 7ft instead of 15. Have a 22lb and a 26lb to mess with when it warms up

Hovering around 0 degrees with wind chill, couple mag dumps the heat from the silencer was feeling pretty nice

How are you liking the XTEN? My only 10mm is a Glock 20 and I'm not impressed at all. I've been eyeing the XTEN since they released it. Would you recommend it?

I've shot it and it's pretty impressive. I've heard it can be a little picky with bear loads so just make sure you test whatever you plan to use.

If I were buying a 10mm right now, the x-ten is definitely what I'd be getting. I like it better than my XD-M competition 5.25. Recoil is more manageable with the X-ten.

I think it’s the most comfortable 10mm on the market least for my hands, just learned I have to shoot it like hammer fired Sigs and keep my thumbs down.

Factory recoil springs are light so with stout loads it was a handful until I messed with the aftermarket guide rod

The XTEN is not on the "Roster" here. Hopefully the restrictions will be lifted in California soon. 🤞🤞🤞
They are available, but the higher cost people are asking/getting just doesn't make it attractive.
I put in a Tungston guide rod and heavier spring in my Glock. It helped, but it needs to be "dialed in" more. Range days, I find myself not wanting to mess with it and leave it at home.

Very, very cool things came together today !!! 🔥🔥🔥 I’ll post more pics and impressions once the pew pew is all dialed in. Much appreciation to the “anonymous hero” that helped me track down the superb optics and light/laser combo that are going on the new Sig P229 Legion. Much more than “honorable mention” to our man D dericdesmond and CPK for the beautiful and robust A2 OG Shiv ! 🙏🏼

What’s your impression of the 8.6?
So far so good, but a lot of experimenting left to try. So far, only factory 285 and 300 grain subsonic loads at 50 and 100 meters. Accuracy with the 300s was excellent, and the 285s was good enough. Obviously, it is stupidly quiet. Hunting distance around here is limited, so it will be very nice for a lightweight hunting rifle.

Now that I have some velocity data and a good zero, I’ll take it out to 200, 300, 400 and 500 meters and see how it does with subs. I’m calculating 25 mils of drop at 500, so it is definitely dropping quick. I’ll likely shoot some supersonics too, but my intention is really to stick with subs for this one.

I’m not a hunter just a plinker but 8.6 still interests me, doing an 8” build now and just waiting on the receiver set (maybe this weekend). Have brass prepped and did as much looking for data as I think I could and going to tinker with some 272gr fmj loads

Really want to have some more aggressive loads ready but options for 1:3 and expanding aren’t great at the moment and not ready to drop $400+ in a Mos Tek 1:5 or 1:6.5 twist

That Fix though…..hmmm

It is definitely going to be a fun one to work up some loads for, with some interesting bullet options. Very high BC options all the way down to crazy expanding 2” long 340gr bullets.

I agree with you on the 1:3 too, not sure how any expanding bullets will handle it at higher velocity. It didn’t bother me for my use case for this round/rifle because I prioritized lightweight and quiet. Plenty of other options out there to shoot flat and fast when needed.
