Carothers and Guns

Apologies in advance since I'm gonna talk outta mein arsch (nothing unusual): I love lever-action rifles because I grew up watching lotsa cowboy movies idolizing John Wayne and Clint Eastwood when he was primarily doing the spaghetti westerns (another reason why I took to West World very quickly). When I was looking at bolt action rifles last month, I was salivating over lever-actions and in my mind was debating its merits for me since I probably won't end up in any dense brushy-bushy sorta terrain but then again, who wouldn't want one in their collection?!

The local guy has a Winchester Model 94 30-30 in stock. These are getting harder and harder to come by even at those big online stores so to find and see one at a local So. Cal shop to touch and feel was very exciting! The fit and finish on the Win-M94 was fantastic especially after I looked at some Henrys! I didn't look at any Marlins but from what I have been reading, FWIW, the Winchester is like the Mercedes-Benz of the wood furnitured lever-guns. The caveat for me was the huge price tag of just under $1000 ON SALE! Alright, I know that one can look for a used one for perhaps 30%-40% less but I'm Leary about used guns, specially a Winchester which will be like a family heirloom piece as things have been going on those!

The problem with the 30-30, at least for me, was the potential lack of the ultimate oomph just because I like more oomph :D What's interesting about the one Andy posted is that even if issues with fit and finish to a PITA purist type of person (me), it is stocked and finished in polymer so function rules over form in such format. Another thing is that I get a bit unsettled when I see a scopes on a traditional woodsy "cowboy rifle" because to me, its like putting a saddle on my dog :D :D :D but the above set up feels a lot for belonging when the rifle has 'em bad-arse contemporary looks ;)

I wouldn't worry about the lack of jam; I shot a large 4pt Muley with this and it dropped on the spot (pulled over 85lbs of processed and butchered meat which is a large-ish deer*).
The rifle is actually just painted wood not poly so there is that. I would have preferred poly furniture due do weather considerations but that being said I have a 1959 Model 94' in really really nice condition that shoots extremely well so for going old school I am covered. I like to call that my "Trad Rifle" hunting!

We're just shooting the breeze here Andy ;) Not poo-poo'ing the stopping power of the 30-30 caliber at all, just chit-chatting about such unimportant 1st-world issues :) Thanks for the info on the pained wood as I hadn't read the specs, just had wrongly presumed! I really can't easily get that woodsy Win-M94 outta my mind but it's a $1K + fees luxury item, to me anyway.

No worries man. I honestly will probably end up selling this one in order to pick up the stainless 1895SBL in 45-70 for my bush gun but had wanted to try out the shorty in 30-30! It is fun to shoot and honestly the fit and finish, and mainly the quality of the cycling was amazing for a stock Marlin (compared to others I have played with at stores or friends*). That being said, the Winchester 94 and especially the newer Miroku's are supposed to be nothing short of perfection from what I hear

You're very fortunate to be able to sell off the guns/rifles which do not meet your needs or expectations. Here in Cali, if one makes a mistake in buying a gun/rifle, the selling in the second hand market will not be as easy as it is in the other U.S. states with much less restrictive gun laws. This is just a set if facts that those of us Californians who happen to love and want to live in CA, will have to come to accept. Case in point, a gun purchase mistake by and large means that you will have to consign to a gun-shop and I'd say fooque that. I don't like to give my possessions on the arm (pun) to anyone to assist me to sell. Of course there are sites like GunBroker and that kind but meh to that too. The PITA factor and hence lots and lots of Qs and dithering by yours truly is as to why ;)

That Marlin 1895SBL 45-70 seems to be a very sought after rifle. For me, I think that if I wanted a lever-action which would make sense in terms of what I said the the previous paragraph in addition to an iconic reputation, that will be the Winchester Model 94 30-30 now made in Japan by Miroku. Of course there are more potent calibers models in the same Winchester model 94 pattern other than the 30-30 before I go all the way to a Gvt. 45-70.

I’d like this photo twice if I could.
I’ve been using a Silencerco Octane 45 for a few years, they make great stuff.
I’m still a hold out for calibers that start with a 4 but the siren song of the 9mm has been getting louder lately. I ended up buying the mullet Glock 19X and it has taken up a lot of time on my hip lately.
Looking at the maxim again makes me want to fill out a form 4.
