Carothers and Guns

Picked up my "tricked out" CZ 75 P-01 from the gunsmith today. This CGW kit and the old style trigger, made a tremendous difference from that heavy DA/SA pull. In fact, it's so hair trigger scary that I will be sorta scared to use it as a carry gun! I may have to get another CZ for my wear & tear gun just to keep it close to stock! I'm thinking the PCR with the shorter dust cover (no light rail). Anyway, I spent way too much on the P-01 already but if it shoots as good as it looks and feels, I'll be like a pig rolling in shyte :D

The tritium Tru-Dot Meprolite sights also are a big improvement over the factory sights. I am not left handed but I had to shoot the camera with my right hand :D

I like it, go out and become one with it.

Sadly here in the great state of CA, we will have to go a bit farther away than most to become best shooting buddies ;)

There was a time when the local sheriffs in the unincorporated areas were a lot more relaxed about shooting in certain areas of the public land but the increases in the wild fires have made those options more and more limited and restrictive :( The fish and game place in Escondido CA is currently the best place for those who like me, eschew indoor ranges.

Escondido R&G is a members only club, but pot shoots and 5 stand on Tue and Wed nights used to be open to the public. I have a friend on their committee and offered to sponsor me but it takes a lot of time investment I just don't have right now.

Check out Rainbow R&G, Pala and of course BLM is open right now too for NCSD. I abhor indoor shooting I went to Poway W&G for a buddy's son Bday party and forgot how loud it is indoors. I hunt without earpro usually and only use ear plugs outside so I had to double up inside, it was miserable.

If you ever want to shoot at Southbay R&G or hit some clays at Lemon grove R&G or P2K hit me up. Nice P01 I wish I had spent the money and Cajunized my SP01 but i sold it instead.

I use to take a class through the community College system in SD that met at the Sheriffs range every Tuesday? And it was open to the public during the week & Saturdays to the public. That was back in 1996 so things may have changed there? ;-)

The local Sdpd range is open to the public off hours, basically when the pd aren't shooting.... it's right outside of golden hill.

We have a 750 acre private outdoor gun club here. I'd be happy to give you a tour so you could shoot till you're happy.

I've always had this fascination with NM truth be told. I prefer the northern parts of the state (way north of Albuquerque, the closer to CO the better) as opposed to the southern parts, but then again what do I know?! I don't mind bone chilling cold as long as it friggin doesn't get all soggy & wet! I like the high desert and big open skies, specially at night times when I can just sky & star gaze :) Who knows, maybe one of these days I'll pack the truck and head on over to see how far my pennies would stretch for a piece of homestead type property. I've gotta be near a post office though, that is a MUST. CPK's Momma NinJo doesn't have delivery drones yet ;)

If I go to Escondido, I'll have to go with the owner of the gunshot who is a member there as his trainee for lessons and things. I also went to that new snazzy one in Poway and that once was enough. It was sort of cliquish and in addition to being loud which I also hate, they prefer to sell memberships and things which is fine as their business model, but not for me. I'll have to check out the Pala place but as you know, the options on public lands are getting just less and less for us :(

P.S. Thank you V much for your kind offer of hospitality :)

The polymer based Sig SP2022 which I had mentioned seems like a really good handgun for a lot less than the full metal ones

The Sig 2022 is probably one of my favorite polymer pistols. Easy to shoot, very accurate, sturdy and a comfortable grip. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for concealed carry because of the size and bulk. But it is a great pistol to go out and have fun with.

Perhaps it was SDPD? Could of swore it was Sheriffs Range?. .......................with the round river rock supports & right by the highway... it’s been a few years.. I do remember seeing SDPD trainees there.. They would chuckle at civi shooters. We had a few young ladies that could outshoot 99% of them. I’m in LA County now. We have the Angeles Range & a few private ones. I prefer out of doors.indoors, like LAX by world famous “Randy’s Donuts!” to loud! practice for any length of time indoors

Love NM! Maybe when we retire?

Head down to Chula Vista after sunset.
You’re allowed to shoot the shit out of everything there.
Oceanside isn’t much different.

OK for my 3rd and the last (for quite a while anyway) handgun, I finally settled on a CZ RAMI (2075 model with the safety because the decocker version is not on our CA-DOJ approved roster) as I passed up on the CZ 75 PCR which I could've had for a bit less than the RAMI. I'll just have to wait out 10 more days to be able to do paperwork because of CA's 30 days prohibition on purchasing a subsequent handgun. Deposit was placed and the RAMI set aside for me, so here's why I went with the RAMI:

I've already spent a shyteload of extra $ accessorizing my P-01 so I didn't want to go through the process with the PCR which is basically the same, well a notch lower than the P-01: same stiff DA/SA right outta box and same cheesy feeling rubber grips with the palm swell which 'no me gusto'!. I didn't want to spend another dime aftermarket and wanted to keep completely stock including the grips, i.e, totally wear & tear gun, suitable for CCW if and when I should decide to go that route. CA has mag capacity limit so no advantage lost by going sub-compact. The RAMI is very close to my Beretta 84 B Cheetah in terms of size/weight but with more oomph (9mm vs .380). That 84B is in such mint shape that after reading what Chad had opined, I may very well keep it in the safe :)

So now I suppose that I'm officially a CZ & S&W revolver fanboy. What Glocks? Ah, yuk! What Ruger? ugh, barf! LOL guys, J/K... J/K and thanks for putting up with me and my silly juvenile whims :D

Casino,
Not a gun guy but all that talk about how difficult it is to find a place to shoot is depressing.
Around here 15 minute drive up in the hills and your good. Public range about 15 minutes.
Unfortunately some people don't respect the outdoors or others.
Shotgun shells, brass, and target trash litter the ground everywhere that's relatively close.
Also shooters doing there thing around outside exercisers.
Of course those are the bad eggs and most are very conscious and courteous of their actions.
Cheers

Sure is fun figuring it out though, isn't it Mat? I was looking through the gun counter the other day and I realized one revolver that I really wish I had acquired is the Ruger Bisley .22 in stainless with maybe a 6.5" barrel (not really sure what all the options are but I think I remember seeing that one when I was younger). Ideally I'd love to have that gun in a convertible like the single-six (22LR/22WMR) but I'm not sure if they ever made that one.

Window shopping, mind shopping, YouTube shopping or whatever is most of the fun. The actual paying part, not so much ;)

I know there are some suppressor folks on here and I am about ready to move forward on a dedicated .22 can for teaching my daughter to shoot. I'll be running it mostly on a VQ tuned Ruger 22/45 Lite.

My criteria are:
- Supression level
- Weight
- Maintenance
- Attainability

There are some pretty slick 22 cans out there but finding one I can get in stock locally is a challenge despite being in a very well serviced area. I think I've settled on the Freedom Armory Minuteman Titanium. It's spendy but I like the titanium build and it meets all of my other requirements, plus it's in stock at one of my preferred dealers.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I’m not familiar with that suppressor but you may want to check into how titanium reacts to the “ dip “ method of cleaning, if I remember correctly titanium doesn’t react well with the solvent/acid. If you plan to just wire brush, scratch, Brillo pad, sonic clean, etc then I think titanium will be fine.

I have the Dead Air Mask and it’s my favorite can. It is user serviceable, the sound suppression is absolutely top tier, the tone is very nice, it’s easy to take apart, it comes with the disassembly tool, and it feels bomb proof. It’s also rated for all rimfire cartridges and FN 5.7.
Unfortunately all of that comes at the cost of being heavier than the lightweight titanium and aluminum cans so if that’s one of the criteria that’s higher on the list of important features then it may not be what you’re looking for.
I shoot it a lot on a Ruger MkIII. 22/45 lite along with several other 22’s and it doesn’t feel heavy to me, but, that’s something that may not be the same for you.
They usually retail around $400.

I hope that info helps, no matter which 22 can you pick I know you’ll be hooked. They’re a lot of fun and are the best thing I’ve bought for help in training new shooters, including my kids.
