Case Mini Trapper with Bottle Opener / Screwdriver ("Beer Trap"!!!)

^^^^^^^^^ Yup , although if you have a drill press ezopen notches can be done. Or if a friend does...😎

Just got this today (actually two of them) so I wanted to try and dye one, I have a couple of other brown/red cases so I thought I would try green. The only green I have is RIT Apple Green. I imagined an "apple jack" but after I oiled it, sorta reminded me of a "pickle jack". Green is my favorite color so I will use this alot. Its a great slicer, and not too bad opening beverages also. Its a great little knife!!
One thing though, after I pulled it out of the green dye bath the bolsters and liners both were a deep copper color, which you can sorta still see in the pics,
has this happened to anyone else dying their case knives?

That's a beautiful green on those handles, Jeff. The discoloration is interesting to me. I wonder if it is something in the green dye reacting with the steel. How long did you have to simmer it to achieve that level of green? Are you okay with the bolster color or do you wish it were still polished silver in color?

Edit: Have you tried to remove the coloration on the steel with polish or Flitz? I'm very curious as to the cause and extent of this discoloration.

I've seen new knives that have laid around tarnish and have a similar discoloration, I would guess it just tarnished during the bath. I bet it will buff silver with a little rubbing, possible polishing.

Thanks, its not exactly how I had hoped it would turn out but I like it anyway, it looks a lot like a green pepper color. I let it simmer for about 20 minutes, half h2o and half dye. Its seems to be fading the more I have it in my pocket. When I first pulled it out of the bath it was a deep copper color which I think went with the green, but it has subsided. It will probably fade back to the original finish soon. I'm not sure why that happened though. I have another one but I might dye that cherry red/cocoa brown color.
Yours looks great as well!!

That knife has me in a quandary. I've always carried SAK's and always found the tools so handy, but that little California clip on the Beer Trap is just to sweet to use. So I'm back to the Beer Trap, I don't like changing out knives like most folks here. One knife, day in, day out. keeps life simple. Anyway I'm appreciating everything about that little trapper. It just works.

bt93- you probably have at least two pockets on your trousers right? Problem solved! I really shouldn't advocate that in all good conscience, or you might end up like me , with a fixed on the belt and one in(almost) every pocket. I'm starting to think about suspenders and my belt :D Seriously if you did carry both you might find out which you reach for more often.
Thanks, Neal

Neal, I hear what you're saying, I'm just not that into redundancies. I generally keep as little in my pockets as possible, just keys and pocket knife, rarely any coins. I'll probably go back and forth for awhile.

That green apple mod was pretty cool! Kudos!

Jake- hey I was poking about on everyone's favorite auction site, when I ran across a "vintage Syracuse knife co ezopen jack" with a surprise! cap lifter/flathead screwdriver. It does look a bit used, but I kinda wondered if they really ever produced such a thing? Do you or anyone else have any knowledge about this? I don't want to hijack your thread, but I was very curious. If it's not real it seems like a lot of work to do the mods required.
Thanks, Neal

Neal, I haven't seen the knife so I can't comment on its authenticity but Camillus did make knives branded Syracuse Knife Co that fit that description. Sometimes they were used as promotional giveaways and had advertisements on them. The quality can vary but they were often inexpensive knives. Remington also made similar knives with bone or synthetic covers. Some had advertisments on the shield like this one.

Looked similar, but with a clip,IIRC. Just spent a couple of hours of naptime perusing knives, and am having problems recalling. Hate to think how bad it'll be when I'm OLD;)
Neal
Ps : nope I lied it was spear, with fed shield. Low enough price, but are they worth it? Never mind , retread your post.

No worries, Neal. In traditionals we measure age differently. ;)

One thing that may be surprising about the Remington in that photo is that the blade is not full. I wanted to use the knife so I sharpened the blade past a chip that was present when I purchased it. It doesn't look it though. Those old Remington spears were whoppers. Cattaraugus also had some very full spears. You don't see that so much on new knives. Companies tend to be more conservative and collectors can be more critical of things like rub or rapping blades. But those huge old spears are a joy to use.

The quality varied also on the Remington knives that I've seen. Some were okay but others had issues common on low cost knives. The radio/electrician knives seemed to have more consistent construction than the cap lifter knives. The cap lifters were often promotional items and I suspect that cost was a major consideration. That's one of reason that it's a real treat to see modern cap lifter knives built to the same standards as the rest of the knives from Case (or GEC).

I've been pining for a quality traditional with a single blade and a caplifter, in stainless, for the past year, and every candidate I've looked at fell short somewhere. Until now!

I'm over the moon about the fact that this knife exists! Finding out about it made my Sunday, and I've got a yeller one on the way. This feels like a knife that will look great in yellow Delrin.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to do a happy dance -- a jig of joy! :D :D :D

I've got one of these on my wish list. I don't know what it is about this design, but it just calls to me.

Ordered up the yeller and amber. Was so sweet when they got here , just had to get a kirinite also before they're gone.:p

Amber received today, and I dare say that my beloved Farmer might see some dresser time over the next few weeks. Get one of these while you can. It's a beauty.
