Case Mini Trapper with Bottle Opener / Screwdriver ("Beer Trap"!!!)

I wasn't sure I would like this clip blade shape, but it's thick enough and sturdy. It works for me. The caplifter works well too. I haven't screwed anything yet, except myself by spending more money. Good quality as expected. It's silly, it's fun, go get you one. :D

So how's everyone getting along with their beer trap. I'm getting used to not having the heavy SAK in the pocket. The blade on the trapper is proving to be more versatile (or seems to be) than the spear point. I scraped some gunk off some earbuds that was missing the past week behind a chair. A bit dusty there. Anyway they're Amazons version of Apples ear pods. Maybe the spear blade on the SAK would've done it. I initially wanted to use the tooth pick, but gave that skinny little blade a try and it worked. I like using that California Clip, it just feels like it can do a lot more delicate work than my SAK. Emphasis on feels like, I've done a lot with the SAK, but the trapper blade just feels more comfortable doing delicate stuff. Anyway let's hear some more feedback.

Just pulled mine out of the pot, rinsed it down, and applied a little mineral oil to the bone. Before:

Both pictures are unedited and directly under a halogen spot light in my kitchen. It's a little bit lighter in color than I want, but I'm thinking that the oil from my hands will darken it up over time. About 50 minutes of simmering with approx. 50/50 mix of Rit Cherry Red and Dark Brown.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

Blackdogfinn1, It's supposed to be permanent. I read a bunch on here about Rit Dye for bone, and my understanding is that it is permanent. No bleeding so far. I guess I'll have to update after it spends a day in my sweaty pocket.

Thanks, Barrett! Couple more pics.

Thank to jhoffman74 for the tips!

Wow, Shawn, that is a fantastic dye job!! These pics make it look very much like Case's chestnut jigged bone, one of my favorites!:cool::thumbup:

I used the screwdriver today to change the flint in my Zippo lighter. Worked perfect.

Wow, that dye job looks great. I agree, it does look like chestnut jigged bone now. Very nice.

Yes, a really good dye job that.

The knife looks like a very good candidate as alternative to GEC's Beerknives. Being stainless and available and moderate cost is another huge draw. However, I won't be up for one. Once I've got one knife/bottle opener I can't find the need for more actually. Wish I were this sober with most knife patterns though:D:D

Love the dye job on that bone, it's come up really nice. Thanks for the pics
Seriously thinking of the case beer trapper as a substitute while waiting to get a Gec

Wurrwulf really nice! I wonder if I can send you a coupon blah-er ones I have?;) Really tho', it makes me want to give that process a shot. I'm a little color blind(red/green), so I'm a little nervous, but my wife would be quite willing to tell me if it looked bad.:D Do you have a dedicated pot for this? I'm thinking one of our kitchen pots would lead to my untimely demise, so I'll have to hit yard/garage sales or goodwill. Back to the knives, I'm thinking of calling a distributor and asking if they know of any other types of covers coming out on these. I'm sure it'll be the standard "depends on sales", but you never know. What if they came out with one in 154cm? Would that change the equation for anyone? 😎
Thanks, Neal

Thanks, again, everyone for the comments.

Neal, when I bought the dyes, I picked up a $5 1 qt pot from Wally World as I knew using my wife's pots would result in my blood leaving my body. :D

The process is very simple: a little water, salt, dish soap, and I used about half a bottle of each Cherry Red and Dark Brown. Simmered on the stove while I washed the knife with soap and water. Tossed it in the pot and pulled it out/rinsed it off every 15 minutes to check the progress. Once I was happy with the color, I gave it a final rinse and dry before rubbing it down with mineral oil. Voila. Think I spent $12 including the pot.

Over the weekend I started missing my SAK, specifically the leather punch, the phillips screwdriver, the scissors and the magnifying glass, not to mention the cutting which the beer trap did. Anyway my week with the beer trap was cut short. I'm still keeping it, it's just to cool to give up.

If the Beertrap was offered with the wharncliffe blade and easy open notch I'd most defiantly get at least one.
