Case Tony Bose Collabs pic and discussion thread.

Honestly, the subject of art itself in the eye of the beholder. Whomever thinks Tony's knives are art are exactly correct! Whomever thinks his knives are not art are also correct! :)

Seriously though - I do think there is art in sublimely created functional objects and tools. Tony's work certainly applies in the eyes of this beholder.
I was trying to come up with the words to explain my feelings on this subject. I agree totally. Well said!

Bump ! :)

Congratulations TheFactor TheFactor ! Your locking Lanny has to be the Mother of All Bone Stags! What a pile side! My Tribal Lock is not a collaboration knife, but it was designed by Tony. This knife has made me appreciate Bone Stag for the first time. It makes for a great handle and looks much better in real life. Tony’s customs are nice and round rather than flat, with all the edges being smooth. Bone Stag has a similar feel.

Now this Wharncliff Trapper is a collaboration knife, and one of the best knives in my collection. Ebony was Tony’s favorite wood for knife handles.

Thank you My friend !
That’s a beautiful Trapper and Tribal you have there too 👍🏻

I am really digging thee knives. Can someone shed some light on these Case/ Tony Bose collabs. Were they made by Case or by Tony Bose? After a little research I see some sell for around $150, some even as low as $100. Then there are others that sell for $550+. What is the difference between the two?

I'm far from an expert, but...
Some knives were designed by Tony Bose and built by Case in their normal production line.
Examples of these are the Sway Back, the Sowbelly, and the Saddlehorn. They carry the TB stamp but are their regular production quality.
Others were designed by Tony Bose and he supplied a copy to take apart and copy. These are made in Case's "custom" shop/line and include better steels and finishes.
Apparently, Tony would oversee production of these higher end knives. They include the Case and Bose name on the stamp and cost quite a bit more.
Examples of these are the Norfolk, Cattle Knife, HT Trapper, Dogleg Jack, etc. If you see $100 price, it's probably regular production. $400 or more and it's the colab line.

Here are a couple of posts Tony made on the subject of the collabs construction.

The regular production knives like the trapper and BackPocket they are doing now only the blade is EDM wire cut. On the yearly collab I do with them all the parts are wire cut including the shield and bolsters, liners, blades and springs. I take no offence to this. I know that most people don't understand what goes in to these yearly knives. The cost of producing them is much higher than a regular production knife. It gives somebody a chance to get a piece of me at a fraction of what one from me would cost. These are very good knives, the best Case ever made I think.

I don't do anything in the production of these knives besides advise them if I see something that needs corrected. The knives I send them are posted earlier in this thread, they are tuned and right on the money. The pull apart is what they make the program with that EDM wire cuts the parts. That's a very expensive cut and is what makes these things more expensive but you either got to run with the big dogs or stay on the porch. A big hats off to Scott Freer at Case, he's the one that sets all this up. Some here have complained, always the same ones, but I think they are a hell of a knife for the money. Nuff said.

I don't have much to add that JohnDF JohnDF and redoxmusic redoxmusic haven't already covered and I most certainly am far from an expert on the matter. That said, there are definitely distinctions to be made between the general production knives that simply have T.B. stamped on the tang and the actual annual collaboration knives. The former are knives that you can find in the $75-$125 range and largely exhibit similar materials and construction methods that you would find on a GEC (i.e. brass liners, nickel-silver hardware, and common steels like CV (1095ish) and Tru-Sharp (SS)). The latter are knives that are a considerable step up in terms of materials used and actual construction methods (i.e. stainless steel liners and hardware, more premium steels like ATS-34 and 154-CM, milled liners and pivot washers) - these seem to run in the $350 (if you're lucky) to $600+ range.

It's my understanding that they are all Bose designs and that the general production patterns are regularly available where the annual collabs are one and done - never to be produced again.

Thank you gentlemen. Makes sense now. Generally speaking, quality wise, these are the step between GEC and custom?

Thanks for quoting these posts. Good references from one who knew the process.
Always loved this one from Tony; "but you either got to run with the big dogs or stay on the porch".

Absolutely. I had started to add some the specifics but thought better of it. No one can say it better than Tony. I feel like someone needs to make a compilation of all of his BF comments. I've read through a bunch over time and enjoy every comment.

I would say Case/Bose are a step up from GEC, but you're paying 3-5x the price, so they should be. I would also say they rival some customs, but to be honest I am not sure who you could find these days to build a multi-blade knife in this price range.

Some annual patterns have come out as special runs, but not the exact materials,e.g. damascus blade or red bone covers.
