"Castaway" blade?

basic 11or basic 9 or 1311 I would think. they seem like t hgt e most do anything kinds of knifes. never have to worry about hand discomfort either

1311 would be great choice...it can process a lot of the stuff you'd gather...it makes a serviceable machete...gives you a lot of reach to keep critters at bay...plus the sr101 would likely sharpen up on a dense volcanic rock and some spit, in a pinch.

I, too, am glad you brought this thread back up. My Busse stable has changed significantly since my original replies, although my choice has only changed slightly.

I also like the slight divergence in topic, away from JUST "Castaway," to Castaway/N&A or Alone.

For C/N&A, I would pick the SYKCO AR 9.5, due to the size, the INFI, and the Res-C. Res-C proved itself to me in the CGBB13 vs. John Deere incident, and I have used the crap out of my AR 9.5 around the yard/homestead, and it has never failed to impress me. With the size, the shape of the blade, everything, I think it would be the knife I would most want with me if I got stranded.

For Alone, I actually wouldn't go much smaller, but I would go lighter. Since I now have a TGULB, it would be one of my 9 items.
Oh man, the AR9.5!! Can't believe I forgot about him! Damn fine blade.

I've sharpened SR101 on 60 grit sandpaper and spit before

Yeah, and IF, the blade broke, you'd very likely still have enough salvageable length left to use, for multiple edges.

I think salt water is overrated if you use the knife all day, every day. Most machetes are high, high carbon and last a very long time. And I've found sr101 is about as corrosion resistant as almost any HC steel.

I would be concerned about salt water intrusion under the Res-C handle, however. 🤔

I live in Montana. My scenario would involve getting stuck out in the woods and could happen driving or backpacking.

My current Busse/Kin arsenal that I would consider, consists of:

1311 (sr101)
Battlesaw (infi)
Sawmandu (sr77)
AR9.5 (infi)
HOGB8 (infi)

I have others in the mail amd around but those are what I would pick from today.

The 1311 sits under the back seat of my truck. The AR9.5 is in my bug out bag. I can and have straped either to my pack and gone off in the woods and am confident either would help me survive.

Out of the two saw backed blades, the battlesaw is heavy and makes a great chopper. The sawmandu(new, havent used) is much lighter, has more teeth and would be better for slicey things. I need to use it but I can already see it making it's way to the top of my collection.

The HogB8 would be another great all around knife. I wouldnt hesitate to grab it.

I guess I am getting at, ALL my Busse/Kin knives would help me survive an environment I would get stranded in. If I had to choose one and going on the theme of all around user, the AR9.5 would probably win out. Followed closely by the 1311 and battlesaw. I may change all of this after I put in some time with the sawmandu, only time will tell.

TGULB for me, used it for 8 hours straight one day and my hand wasn’t that sore. The ASH 2 I had is a great knife but didn’t fit my hand right. The Ratweiler fits my hand really well also, but I haven’t used it that much. The nuclear meltdown treatment really makes a difference and so does the lighter weight. Never got fatigued with the TGULB.

That's the thing about the TGULB. It is so light, yet so STRONG! And has phenomenal cutting ability. The only thing it MIGHT lack a little is chopping, because it is just so wickedly light.
The only reason the AR9.5 gets the nod in a Castaway/N&A is because I could see needing more chopping ability than the TGULB provides. I COULD consider the TG-P for the C/N&A scenario, I suppose. But the edge on the AR9.5 has shown itself to be better. Dunno.

Gifted a friend a TGULB, and his only criticism is that there is no safe way to strike a ferro rod on it.
