Cayanne Pepper?

tin-foil hats and moon cycles notwithstanding, capsaicin is a pretty powerful pain reliever IIRC.

I know it sounds crazy, my first reaction on reading this was "OW!!" But it bears looking into.

CAYENNE PEPPER - EMERGENCY USES
Compiled And Edited By Tom Harrelson

THERAPEUTIC ACTION
CAYENNE is a POWERFUL and PURE Stimulant, having NO Narcotic Effect, increasing the POWER of the Pulse and carrying the Blood to ALL parts of the Body, plus EQUALIZING and RESTORING the BALANCE of Circulation throughout the Body! Cayenne is a Hemostat, ARRESTING the flow of Blood from a Cut or Wound in SECONDS and a Cardiac Tonic, HELPING to REBUILD the Heart. It is an Antiseptic, KILLING Pathogens and a Counter-Irritant, helping to RELIEVE Pain. And Cayenne is a Stomachic, HELPING to DIGEST Foods and a Carminative, HELPING to EXPEL Gas. CAYENNE PEPPER IS DR. SCHULZE'S NO. 1 EMERGENCY HERB!

FORMULA
The BEST Cayenne Pepper Tincture is made by the following Dr. Schulze Method:
1. Start to make this and ANY Tincture, if possible, on a NEW Moon.
2. Take a Quart Canning Jar and fill it 1/4 FULL with DRIED Cayenne Peppers, getting the HOTTEST ones (i.e. - Habanero, African Bird, Serrano, Jalapeno - 90,000+ Heat Units), that you can obtain.
3. Add enough 50% Grain Alcohol (100 Proof Vodka) to the Cayenne Peppers (powdered, using a Blender or Grinder) to just COVER them.
4. Use enough FRESH Cayenne Peppers, that you can blend with 50% Grain Alcohol (100 Proof Vodka) to turn the Mixture into an Apple Sauce-Like Consistency.
5. Add this Mixture to the 1st Mixture, filling up the Canning Jar 3/4 FULL.
6. Fill up the rest of the Canning Jar with MORE 50% Grain Alcohol (100 Proof Vodka).
7. Shake it as MANY times as possible, during the Day.
8. Let this Mixture sit, until the following FULL Moon (15-16 Days), but OPTIMALLY until the following NEW Moon (28-29 Days)!
9. Strain this Mixture through an UNBLEACHED Coffee Filter.
10. Bottle the RESULTING Tincture.

NOTE: Part EQUALS Volume, NOT Weight in this Tincture Method. Modify this procedure by using DRIED Herbs ONLY, if FRESH Herbs are NOT AVAILABLE, and when making other Herbal Tinctures also. Also if you want to make a SUPER-POTENT Tincture (i.e. - Cayenne Pepper & Lobelia Seed Pod - see below), then allow the Mixture to sit for a FULL 3 Months!

APPLICATIONS & DOSAGES
NOTE: In the following Steps of this Section, "Dropperfuls" or "tsp." are referring to Cayenne Pepper Tincture, unless otherwise noted. SUBSTITUTE Cayenne Pepper Powder (250,000 Heat Units or above - Habanero, African Bird, Serrano, Jalapeno), if Cayenne Pepper Tincture is NOT AVAILABLE. 1 HEAPING Tablespoon added to an 8 oz. Glass of PURE Water is EQUAL to 5 Dropperfuls of Tincture. 1 Dropperful EQUALS 30 Drops.

If you're working with an UNCONSCIOUS Person, you must be CAREFUL, when putting the Dropperfuls into the Mouth, so that you do NOT CHOKE or DROWN this Person, but then even if he/she GAGS a little, you are SAVING his/her LIFE!! First off I've been sprayed with OC in training; twice. It isn't fun. But, we used it on a deployment to season some really nasty food. On your face, it hurts like hell, but I've had a cut finger and such and it's gotten into it and it really doesn't hurt on your hands. If the cut were, say, on your inner thigh, well you may have some problems then. But it really only hurts on sensitive parts of your body. Also, OC is concentrated and chrystallised; not just natural pepper juice. Thus, I'd say a little cayenne wouldn't hurt if it was on your finger or arm or places like that. Just my .02.

It may have some medicinal value but dose is always the question with any medicine. This is how it is being used right? As a medicine. You can almost always replace the word medicine with the word poison if the dose is incorrect or if the dose is too little you can replace the word medicine with the word ineffective. I am always leery of anything that claims to cure everything from hemorrhoids to heart attacks and strokes. 200 years ago they had a name for people selling these types of cures. They were called snake oil salesmen.

Just my $.02,
KR

"If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper.
It is more powerful than any other."
---Dr. Schulze

I don't want to divert from Cayenne, but I searched for Turmeric in this forum and found nothing. Speaking of makeshift-spice-rack-antiseptics, I remember my grandmother covering washed cuts with ground Turmeric. Stained the fingers yellow, but damned if it didn't work like a charm.

She never kept "wussy" Band-Aids around, only turmeric or iodine. Needless to say, we rugrats never ran with scissors in her house. ;)

I don't know about instructions to give something to an unconscious person by mouth...

I also will pass on guinea pigging the blood clotting affects.

I'm partial to elevating wounds and applying direct pressure.

I guess that the cayenne pepper thing could work. An old-timer once told me that they applied flour to the wounds when they castrated bulls. I can't easily envision a situation in which either would be my best option.

I've also heard that putting cayenne pepper in your socks will keep your toes warm in the winter. I've never tried it, but the purported circulation-improving properties of cayenne pepper suggests that it might work.

I also saw RAMBO cauterize a wound with gunpowder in a movie, so that might work too:D

I've been using cayenne pepper on cuts for the past couple of years. It dose sting, but very little. Bleeding stops much quicker and the cut heals faster.

Tips:

1) Fresh cayenne works much better than the stale stuff from the kitchen. I place new jars of cayenne in my first aid kit and rotate to kitchen use after opened.

2) For me, cayenne will usually stop the blood flow within a couple of minutes. If, the bleeding continues, I go to plan B, which is super glue. Super glue stings like hell, but works.

3) Deep cuts, puncture wounds and cuts to sensitive areas require proper medical treatment.

While the majority of this guy's statements may have value, I'd question a lot of it due to certain errors, such as equating angina pectoris to a heart attack, etc. He also seems to think that cayenne is a category rather than a specific pepper - he basically uses cayenne where he should say chili - so he seems to be referring to anything with significant amounts of capsaicin.

As others have stated, fresh cayenne is considerably more potent than the ground stuff in your spice rack. Luckily, the most convenient source of cayennes is also the freshest: grow your own. They can be grown in most climates (though they prefer warm and moist) and can be picked green or left until deep red (they are full of capsaicin at any stage). Information on growing cayennes is plentiful, if you're interested.

I've used super glue before. You are only suppose to glue the skin close, not the stuff under neather, in my case was bones.Make sure you leave a small gap on either end of the cut so it will drain.

I've heard it, don't want to try it. As for superglue I imagine it's like covering cuts with duct tape, closes it but really not a good choice health wise if you have another option.

Next time I get a really good cut, I'll try the cayenne pepper. As for the super glue, it is identical in every way to medical grade products used to close up minor cuts and really does heal up nicely. Even the applicator is similar. We used to use these products, Vet-Bond being one, in veterinary medicine. The use of cyanoacrylate adhesives for wound closure was pioneered by Army surgeons during Viet Nam. I keep a tube in my wound closure kit.

You want to ensure that all bleeding has stopped, put a drop in the cut and give it a three to five second squeeze from either side of the wound.

Agreed! I keep a tube in all of my first aid kits. Totally superior to bandaids for small cuts.

Thanks for the personal experience. It does work and it is great to have someone here say it. Thanks again.

Boy, this screams out "load of crap."

So I decided to check out Mr. Harrelson's claims about cayenne, and after a brief review of what I found...

...he's the *only* guy making these claims. All other sites referencing the healing properties of cayenne link back to this list.

Does anyone think that's a smart plan? Wouldn't you want to see some supporting evidence from the New England Journal of Medicine. the FDA, or even a vetted alternative medicine website?

Or just "some guy" you don't know on the web? Run, if you still can, for the hills.... just my reaction.

I don't think you will ever see the any government sanctioned group, IE the FDA, New England Journal of Medicine or whomever say that old home remedies work.

Never have, never will.

I have used it and it works great for stopping bleeding I have used it twice for cuts that I have had. It does not hurt putting it on your wound. I carry it in my pack in a orange match safe.
Take care all.
Bryan

I should have said how I have used it. I sprinkle it on the wound and pack it in the wound. If you are bleeding bad enough it will wash out the C Pepper
just put some more on until the bleeding stops. That simple and that fast.
Like I said I have used it twice and had great results. My mom has used it for years for this besides for cooking that is how I learned to use it.
Bryan

I found this interesting:

Historical or traditional use:

The potent, hot fruit of cayenne has been used as medicine for centuries. It was considered helpful for various conditions:

* Gastrointestinal tract: including stomachaches, cramping pains, and gas.
* Diseases of the circulatory system. It is still traditionally used in herbal medicine as a circulatory tonic (a substance believed to improve circulation).
* Rheumatic and arthritic pains: Rubbed on the skin it causes, what is termed as, a counterirritant effect. A counterirritant is something which causes irritation to the area to which it is applied. This makes it distract the nerves from the original irritation (such as joint pain in the case of arthritis).
* Sore throat If gargled with water it can work as an effective treatment for sore throats.

[edit] Active components:

Cayenne contains a resin-like pungent substance known as capsaicin. This chemical relieves pain and itching by affecting sensory nerves. Capsaicin temporarily causes various neurotransmitters to release from these nerves, leading to their depletion. Without the neurotransmitters, pain signals can no longer be sent. The effect is temporary. Capsaicin and other constituents in cayenne have been shown to have several other actions, including reducing platelet stickiness and acting as antioxidants.
