CG BB13 Awesomeness!!!

Super comparison--thanks, SP!!!

In your first photo, the sage blade looks noticeably wider than the tanker. Is that just an illusion? For example, if you measure from the spine at the top of the clip across the blade to the deepest point on the belly, are they really that different or about the same?

Thanks again!

Will, pretty sure it is just an optical illusion, but I'll check when I have them out next to measure them. Maybe tomorrow.

Awsome Pics, i got Sage coming, but Ur pics almost make me wish I got Muddy. You ofcourse got the right idea and got 1 of each lol

That would be great--thank you! Noticed the muddy looks broader across the nose than the tanker, also. Maybe just a color thing.

So, it's mainly an optical illusion. ;) I laid these four spine-down, and the edges are pretty darn close to the same. Laying a straight edge (one of the cardboard sheaths) across them all at the belly you can see some very slight variations, likely from the hand sharpening process. Being extra-critical, it turns out that the widest is the Muddy one, and the narrowest is the Tanker. There is perhaps a 0.050" difference in width between the two, so not much at all.

As you move along the edges, they all vary slightly. The Tanker is actually the widest towards the heel, but again, we're talking on the order of less than the width of the sharpened edge in difference, so only minor.

Sorry, no pics, as I couldn't get any to turn out that really showed much of these very minor differences.

I also measured the thicknesses of these four. The are as follows:

  • 0.222" Black
  • 0.229" Gray
  • 0.226" Muddy
  • 0.224" Sage

(I'll edit these into the first post.)

HTH!

Now THAT's some in-depth analysis. Thanks, man. You're one of probably very few "civilians" who could perform those metrics. Great stuff!!!

Thanks Will! :) I am an engineer...

I tried to measure the knives' bellies with my calipers, but to do so I need to lay the blades down. In doing so, it's difficult to measure the two at the exact same location along the lengthwise axis. With them laying on their spines, I tried to mark the edges in the same place with a pencil to keep the same reference spot, but I couldn't get consistent readings.

So suffice it to say, they're pretty close. ;) In the neighborhood of 1mm / 1/16". Again, about 0.050".

Five hundredths of an inch is pretty close--as you say, less than the width of an edge bevel. Actually less significant than the (also small) variations in weight. And MUCH less variation than we saw in the "good old days". :D

Thanks again!

Sweet Hesus !!!! This thing is wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was actually a bit like a kid unwrapping it ... ;)

Indeed. I was giddy! :D

However, after this, I don't know if I'll be able to handle the awesomeness of the 16" long, 1/4" thick Hognose War Sword... (Please, please Jerry, don't thin that one down!!!)

Oh, and were there any grinder gremlin squiggles on yours? Mine should be showing up today and I can't decide whether or not I want to strip it.
