Challenge: Carry only one for a month

My wife would have called me an idiot and left the room.

It's only fair turnaround.
Generations of men have had to be asked what they thought of this shirt, those pants, etc.

Plus, if she thought that was weird, she would have gone bonko years ago dealing with the rest of my quirks. ;)

I see you changed the title. Now it's one month and not 18 months. I do the one knife thing all the time for a month or three without buying or rotating to another. I find it fun to just buy a new knife on a whim which is why the 18 months wouldn't work for me.

Easy challenge as, generally speaking, I carry the same knife everyday anyway. For the last 12 months or so, it's been a Kershaw Leek (I can't afford to spend big $$ on knives). Just big enough to do most task (other than serious duty ones), but small enough and discrete enough not to draw attention when I pull it out.

Though, to be honest, I'm saving up to replace it with something beefier, like a ZT, but for now, this is it.

No need to make excuses. The Leek is one of the best knives out there at any budget. I carried the Elmax version for almost a year myself, but gave it to my dad. He's never shown much interest in knives, but really liked the Leek.

It's funny how so many of our knives are made well enough to last a lifetime of use (and then some), and the challenge is to carry one around for a month. :D

Saved just enough for a bottle of Blue Label I suspect!
Lol when I started drinking, I figured if liquor is an acquired taste, I'm going to acquire a taste for the cheap stuff. But one day I'll have to try that

Worth every dollar.

Exactly. At just about any time in history, people have used and needed knives more, and made do with less. And now we have knives that would blow their freaking mind, and we use them comparatively little, and own several.

The leek is a classic for a reason. It's really a great design and does just about everything well. If you're looking to upgrade to a ZT, I highly recommend the 0450, similar design idea but upgraded across the board. But honestly, I have several friends who swear by the leek and use the hell out of it, and it just works

I sometimes fondly look back on the multiple years I made do with a single carry knife, a Colt folder that I pad WAY too much for at the gun store.
Used it for everything from opening boxes, cutting tape, to using it as a barbeque tool and eating implement.
It had so many scratches from carry and keys, and still had decades of life left in the blade.

I still prefer the current situation where I have so many quality knives that it takes conscious effort to figure which ones to carry (multiple at a time :) ), but having only one was pretty cool too.

Not really making excuses. I quite like my Leek, but was used to carrying a Kershaw Blackout before that, which served my purposes just a bit better, as it was a little stouter of a knife. I didn't worry about using it for tougher tasks like I do with the Leek.

The Leek is a wonderful knife, and has served me well. And 5 days a week, it's perfect. But on the weekends, when I'm toughest on a knife, I just tend to want a bit more.

No need to spend a bunch of money. A Leek new costs $40-50. You can pick up a barely used Mini Grip or full size Grip for $50-60. I got my Benchmade Auto Presidio 5000SBK for $70 used in good shape. Not sure how much used ZTs are going for, but I'd recommend you scour the sale threads on forums to get a good deal on a barely used one. For the record, my first true EDC knife was a Kershaw Blackout as well. Good knife that served me well for about six years or so as my only knife.

I did a similar challenge in 2014 in the Traditionals sub-forum - the rule was to carry one knife only for everything, plus a SAK for the extra tools if needed. I think the original target was for 3 months. I did just that - Case Small Texas Jack and a Victorinox Alox Cadet were my only two knives, but at the end of the 3 months I was so used to it that I kept going with those two for about 6 months. It was a cure for the impulse to buy new knives, which is a good thing. My knife spending dropped off significantly after that to the point where here in 2016 I haven't bought any knives yet. So if you are trying to cut back, it can be a good step.

Pretty much what I do all the time except I usually have a larger SAK and often a modern. But the modern is optional for the most part as the SAK gets used for most cutting tasks. As to buying knives in 2016, well... I think I have purchased 10 blades so far this year with the last being the GEC #14 Lick Creek Boys knife.

Day 3

Arguably the most important task the Ritter mini grip performs: opening and breaking down the shipping box to my dog's food. And by "arguably" I mean my pup says it is and I say it isn't ;)

Well, I thought long and hard about it, and I finally decided. Came in way under budget, but I should be ok still [emoji2]

[emoji115][emoji115][emoji115] This is my choice. Been faithful for two weeks and one day now.
It is a custom 551 with cpm-20cv and benchmade new g-10 horizontal scales. I ordered it to replace the Crooked river I was carrying because the S-30v was not holding an edge very long. This 20cv took a whole week to lose an edge and that was actively trying to dull it. I whittled blokes of oak cut strapping and anything else to try and dull it. Once dull I put back a great working edge again and have not had a problem yet.
I see this knife making the grade and lasting a long time.

Mine is by far my leek(that I got off the pay it forward thread) carried it almost exclusively for probably two months. Recently I stayed caring a sharp brand 0450, because I have been doing a LOT of cardboard and plastic band cutting, so I need either a second knife for when the leek gets dull or a loaner
