I guess it was technically a mouse but whatever

Hi Kragg! I think Daniel has a custom style Damascus kiridashi going, but that won't help your pocket book. He just sold his batch of 8 steel Kiridashis a week or so ago. The wait will give you time to save!

Too funny! I prefer to use the 1322, quiet and accurate!

Haha I'm from California. Born in the Inland Empire, going to college in Humboldt.

He certainly does! And I want ALL OF THEM. I just have to keep telling myself to start slow for the sake of my poor wallet. It's lost weight this summer, and not in the sexy way.

From the Empire to Humbolt, quite the culture shock there! I'm halway between those places. Pull up a chair and sit back, some cool things go on here.

Daniel, it produces pretty good, but I don't harvest it. Once Zyler is old enough to process them, then maybe I will, lol! I know what you mean about grinding ura, the shallow hollow is hard as hell to keep straight and not to go over the spine. I bet a radius platen makes a huge difference!

Mornin troop!

After doing the Ura a radius platen is on the list! I wanted one last time... I still probably have a half day of sanding left. I dulled it after testing so I can finish it nicely. I made a G10 radiused blockbut need to grind it more too. I have always wanted to do this stuff but it was easier making my first knife!

No kidding on the processing, I forgot about that. They grew all over the VI...

Ceramic Detent Bearings! on the way!

Thanks for the welcomes everyone! And good morning! Though it's probably not morning anymore for most of you haha

Kragg, what have you the idea for a kiridashi? I'd never heard of one til I got on the DFK subforum

I actually got the idea on reddit. Some other people posted about kiridashis, did a search, there's actually a happy DFK dashi owner who posted theirs on reddit, did another search and came here! What really sold me was the dashi testing video where Daniel does horrid horrid things to innocent pennies. Pretty sure it's my new grail knife haha.

Haha yeah I was quite sad to find I discovered this lovely place just a few days late. Damascus is almost too pretty for me. The dashi is gonna be my new best friend in the woodshop, and it's gonna earn its keep! I would looooove one in S7 :D

I’m a big fan of 3v steel super tough stuff, but I heard it's not easy to work with or sharpening. How's price compare it to other steels like M4 or CPM-D2?

Afternoon fellas! I'm dripping sweat, I fired up the 2BF and made an attempt at Mokume gane again. I made a small jig, it worked ok, but needs to be built heavier.

PICS!!!

My little two brick forge running at full heat off a propane bottle, this is what they call dragons breath...

You can see the jig in there, its two mild steel plates with nut/bolts in each corner. I tightened it down as tight as it would go, then a little more.

WOOHOO!!!

This is the best result I have had yet! The failures in this $1.00 chunk are due to bing the side closest the burner and got over heated. I prefer to use MAPP gas but was out. With propane I need to leave it in longer and run this risk. When I see it "sweat" I pull it out and put it into a large clamp and squeeze the hell out of it. When it cools to black heat I quench it and take it out. I will grind out the bad spot, work it down with divots and grooves to give it some pattern. I did a quick etch in FC to bring out the copper for the photo.

I'm pretty stoked with how this one came out and know exactly what needs to be addressed for better results.

Letting the forge cool down right now, having some ice water.

I Love 3V steel super tough and can be ground thin and takes a beating. Much more stain resistant to M4 but eats through belts making it rough on the maker. I just keep a 2"x4" diamond loaded leather square strop and a diafold in my gear just in case to sharpen it. Ive only ever needed to strop it after a metal drum drum or ammo can and then only needed to strop it to razor edge. I double duty it hunting and it goes through bone and all on 5 animals and has never rolled or chipped. For a knife you can sharpen on any porous surface I like A2 or D2 still tough and hold a great edge but super easy to sharpen.

Cool... I had to look up that 'dashi! Thanks on the video, that was funny to make...

Not easy to work at all but can be ground thin so sharpening is no problem.

The price is around that of CPMD2, M4 usually runs a little more but steel varies a lot. M4 is hard to find surface ground. I will charge a fair bit more for 3V because of labor and extra costs such as belts. Materials cost is important but labor has much more to do with pricing as it is the biggest cost in making one of my knives.

Very cool! That is looking great! Nice pics too, that forge is cranking. Nice vortex action, looks like it would work very well.

^Field experience says it best! Thanks for throwing that in, great stuff there.

Busy day! I got some super thin 52100 in, and cut out two Chef Knife blanks. Got one full flat ground today. This thing is so thin! Also tested my scotchbright belt on it; sick! Dan, you able to heat treat D2 / 52100? >.>

Evening Men. I went to Milwaukee for a follow up. The DR said I do not have to come back unless I have problems. That means even though I will walk super slow I will be out with my Fairly knives!!!!

Great news big! Just don't let stubborness set you back by thinking you're better than you are! Been there, done that...

Well my mokume slab was a fail. I errantly worked it too long before annealing again. I got it looking good, but one last hammer blow split all the layers most of the way through.

I'm gonna head back out to the shop once the kid is in bed. Got some cutting and grinding to do.

Water??
Get COFFEE!

lol I had two Rockstars yesterday... might need three today. :D

Nice! I bet you are liking that scotchbrite belt, they rock. HT D2 and 52100, yes I do it all the time. D2 gets sub zero treatment and 52100 is triple normalized...

Great to hear that!!! That is awesome, we're rooting for you!

Ahh... that is rough!

I have always wanted a deeply stamped sterling bracelet (you'd have to see one, I googled them and came up with nothing... local style here on the Res near me) A guy who made them told me they get annealed 40 times for each stamp! stamp, anneal, stamp, anneal... the stamping is so perfect and deep you'd think they were cast but look much cleaner

BTW I did the same thing with my piece, just reminding myself too. :D At least the material is cheap! Keep at it!

Also holy crap, I somehow missed the entire part about getting the 3V in! Wooo!

It is in! I'm getting lots of supplies and gear this week... next week too. I have a list going and have ordered about 100 things I need... wow!

Thanks for hanging in there guys... I don't have much to show but have been grinding like crazy! Lots coming up!

Hey guys I have a metal question. How does titanium stack up against carbon steels as blade material? I'm curious because DFK is the only place I've seen titanium blades and they're always carbidized. Is that because you can't harden titanium like you can steel? Usually I see titanium scales, especially in high-end frame lock folders so I'm sure it's an excellent and strong metal.

Ti blades are good for certain applications and the carbide gives a nice aggressive edge. My Mission knives, no carbide edge, did the job of cutting very well but Mission uses Beta-Ti.

Good morning!

Hey Xander! You've gotta make more mokume...

I'm very excited to see whatcha got buddy!

Thanks! I'm grinding away! Yesterday I wound up getting a lot done, 2 Camp Choppers and a Chef's Knife... hand rubbed the Chef's Knife to 800 so far and all are looking killer!

I really need to do a video to show what they can do. To sum it up - for utility use Carbidized Ti is great, it can even be self sharpening on some materials like cardboard. Carbidized Ti is great on Rope, meat, cloth, veggies, etc. Low maintenance, zero rust, ultra light weight and high strength... The downside is that the edge stability isn't as good as steel, for woodworking, carving or bushcraft steel is better.

The edge stability isn't bad, they do carve well... I know someone here with a very impressive Ti Katana, the test video was incredible!

72 Rockwell Tungsten Carbide is applied (welded essentially with some carbide penetration) to the edge, it is one of the most wear resistant materials known... the Ti is softer so the carbide won't chip like it normally would. The Ti wears slower than the carbide and that is why an edge can be self sharpening.

No heat treat on 6al4v Titanium, it doesn't harden or need hardening.

I use a Ti Backpacker (older version) almost daily, for box breakdown it can't be beat. It is all I need for 95% of what I do.
