Chinese quality and offerings better than North American?

So China can produce some good stuff when they put their mind to it. They aren't the only ones to borrow good ideas.

It's ironic how a country has innovated for 3,500 years contributing to the human race and immensely and now are just known for stealing a 200 year old country's ideas.

It would be interesting to see a better percentage of the knives in the hands of regular users and not collectors. If there are issues with the knives they would be apparent in action outside the safe.

I think there is a good mix of both. Enough anyway that any serious issues would be brought to light. That said both the collectors and users keep this wonderful world of knives going. With the prices of knives now a days I don't blame folks for keeping them in their safe or only lightly using them. I know that I have a couple cheapies that are my go to knives if anything more than opening an envelope needs done. My $100+ knives get carried regularly but they don't ever see hard use.

A CNC machine has no idea what country it's making knives for.

+1000

Lol, China doesn't have a Chris Reeve or Sal Glesser, or Rick Hinderer . All Americans. :D:thumbup:

FWIW, Chris Reeve is from South Africa and started designing and making knives in South Africa.

No one is making a made in the USA slip joint pocket knife at the quality and price point of Rough Rider or Rite Edge.

And exactly what "quality" is that?

If an American company wanted to make a ten dollar slip joint they'd have to lower minimum wage.

We love their food, not their exports!
Truth be told, MUCH Chinese food in North America ain't really Chinese food.

Personally I won't knowingly buy any food (for humans or dogs) imported from China. Can't trust it. Their record is much too faulty to trust. Too many other options available to rely on something you can't trust.

Won't but their knives either. Again, too many other options available.

The irony here is that the people that preach that they "only buy US made" are sitting there typing that statement on a computer that came from overseas, sitting in a house that's filled with electronics and appliances and other products that all came from overseas. You can't make a stand for something you believe in and still use the very products that you put down. If you want to truly support only the US then go build a log cabin off the grid and live on the land. Even some of the companies that people think are made in the US are sourcing some of their parts from over seas. It's just like the watch community where everything says "Swiss made" when to print that on the watch they only had to assemble something like 20% of that watch in Swittzerland while the rest of the parts and pieces came from elsewhere.
Consider practicing what you preach and filling your grocery cart with as much Chinese sourced food and consumables as possible next time you shop for food, toothpaste, etc.

Also, let's at least be honest here and not pull arguments/points out of our rear ends. You are way off the mark regarding the labeling of "Swiss" on watches. Current Swiss law states a watch can only be considered Swiss and labeled "Swiss" if its movement is Swiss and encased in Switzerland with final inspection in Switzerland. To be a "Swiss" movement the movement's components alone (no assembly labor or other costs) must account for not less than at least 60 percent of the movement's value. Even at that there are still Swiss watch manufacturers still making in-house movements (movements not made even by other Swiss companies).

Those innovations stopped long ago. Take the plow for example. They invented the plow LONG ago, but they then never improved it.

I've had great American knives, great Chinese branded knives, great American Chinese-made knives and bad knives of the three categories. Some examples:

Can't complain at all, I love Chinese knives as much as my US, Swiss, Spanish, Taiwanese or Japanese ones.

^^ Benchmade Bedlam knockoff, CRK knockoff. Illegal theft of Axis lock design. "Ethics apart" indeed.

I'd say some Chinese products trumps some USA made knives. For example: REATE and EMERSON!

Are you saying Reate makes better knives than Emerson? Or that Reate and Emerson are two Chinese products that are better than some USA made knives?

I can not afford certain American or European made knives, so I buy some of Chinese offerings.Quality is not the same but Chinese make good beater knives.I also think most western made knives are overpriced for what youre getting. Will be selling most of my knives, and get couple of customs and few Chinese beaters. And yes, some Chinese knives are as good or almost as good as some knives of major popular knife companies that are priced 3-4 x more.

This devolved rather quickly...

Legitimate Chinese manufacturers (Reate, WeKnife, Kizer, Rike) are hardly "monsters" or where this thread veered off to

And the "monsters" (or where the thread is now) are hardly exemplary or reason to be categorically dismissive IMO.

*sigh*

I could go find plenty of examples of American made schlock being sold - that doesn't mean that ZT and Benchmade and Spyderco are making schlock. Ah, well...
