Nice, I've used a small biner with the large locking biner to do the same thing. How's it working for you?

Looking at the Stihl MS 180...

Better option under 300?

Don't need a very big chainsaw... Mostly only need to cut 10-12" wide, or smaller, trees/branches.

if used, and in good shape, go for it... clean it, make sure the oil flows, get a "yellow chain", and use it up.

if new, 181C i think is the slightly better option; most place will double your warrant if you buy the require additive at purchase time.

get a "smart wood holder" too, for fun times (or make one)

I got the 180 C-BE new. I wanted the regular 180 but they were out of stock....The salesman actually tried to tell me the 170 was enough for what i needed. I figured they'd try to sell me a bigger saw rather than a smaller one lol.

I did get the double warranty for Buying the stihl oil. Thought that was a good deal! Gunna need the oil anyway...

I have cut a couple trees down and into sections with it and it cuts wonderfully. But towards the end the kill switch stopped turning the saw off. Now I have to turn the switch down to choke it off. But it still works...

I called the store i got it from and they said they'll fix it no worries... So I'll take it back tomorrow.

Never heard of the smart holders... I'll do some googling!

....yellow chain?

kill switch? what's that?

yellow chain.

so. by law, because 99% of people who buy chainsaws are not pros, they get an "anti kickback chain", by law

it's not awful, so, use it up...

buy a couple backup chains. chains are not spendy hell, depending on your needs, a new chain costs less than a sharpening kit, and your time...

a good shoppe will sharpen your chains for less than it costs you to guy a kit and learn :D

yellow chains are not safety chains. they don't have anti kick back features. they are full chisel fuck you up right now super aggro cut shit chains

good times

i hope you have full face protection and a helmet and at least "chainsaw proof chaps"...

me? i've got logging boots and forearm gauntlets too.

sometimes i have augmented spine protection..

all the gear, all the time...

pro tip: save a good squeeze jar from a food or soap product to more easily fill the oil lube reservoir.

ALWAYS make sure you have oil spraying - if you don't know how, ask.

every 10 hours, take the cover off the chain area, and using an air compressor, blow that shit out :D

every 25 hours, or every new chain/sharpen, flip the bar over.

The more answers i get the more questions i have... What a rabbit hole i have fallen into.

So the silver chain i got is a "safety" chain... The real deal chains come in yellow color... Correct?

My bar is 16" so do i just need to find yellow 16" chains?

Oil spraying? I haven't seen any oil spray anywhere lol. The salesman just said make sure i keep bar oil in it and check it before use to make sure it's not empty..

No chaps yet... But I'll get some soon.

Kill switch... So this is my first chainsaw...so I'm prolly not calling it the right name... And this stihl has the easy start system which might make this different than other saws...

But.... Where the switch is to put it on choke there is a full choke, half choke, on, and off setting for this switch... But the saw stopped turning off when i put the switch up to the off setting. I did some googling and apparently it's not that uncommon of a problem... But an easy fix normally.

I'm not sure if it's related, or a normal feature, or? but even after i do turn the saw off i can hear a hissing sound... Its faint but noticeable. Like air leaking out of somewhere... I'll bring it up tomorrow when i take it to be worked on though.

The air leaking out MAY be coming from the bar oil reservoir. While the saw is running, air is pumped into the bar oil reservoir. This is what pushes the oil out onto the bar during operation.

When you get done cutting, you should completely remove and then replace the bar oil reservoir closure to release the pressure. Don't just crack it open. Remove and replace. Leaving the reservoir pressurized is what causes the oil to leak out while it sits around waiting to be used. Depressurizing the reservoir will prevent MOST of the oil leakage. There will always be a little leakage, but failing to depressurize the reservoir will result in copious amounts of oil running around the chainsaw case.

oil spray - let's say your saw is warm, running, and all that. without touching, point the tip at something fairly light in color, and let it rip for a few seconds.

you should see a line of oil sprayed onto that thing. good to know.

when you run out of gas, if your oil reservoir isn't also lower, you have a clog, issue.

the 180 (i have a 180c?), has one switch. off. on. choke 1. choke 2.

if it doesn't shut off on off? that's a fail mode.

also, anytime you are not cutting, running or not, flick the safety in front of your left hand.

if you REALLY want to study, i have 1000s and 1000s and 1000s of hours of pointers :D

husqvarna has an extensive online course too in how to not die.

one mistake is $250k in medial, easy...

be safe...

can't hurt, but never heard of that.

i hope WW bought an new saw... cuz that sounds completely bizarre...

Ethan has like 200 180s. he loves them.

I'm actually seriously considering one of the 40V chainsaws -- the technology is getting good enough they have the power of a 38CC motor, which is good enough for most limbing/chopping up deadfall into man-portable pieces, and you get a similar (or better) runtime out of a battery as you do out of a tank of gas.
for most of what I do with a saw these days, that's plenty.

cool tip on depressurizing the oil reservoir, though -- thanks!

Well it's been hours since it was running and it still making a very very faint sound.. Maybe air, maybe not air... Maybe a winding sound.... Bizarre.

Regardless it's going back in the morning but first I'll go try opening the oil reservoir.

Bladite this is a 180c and has the switch like you describe and like said doesnt shut off in off mode..

It's obviously defective.

Thanks for all the info and tips fellas!

in my actual extensive research so far, Husqvarna 40 is better due to "several trhings"

google it :D

Will do.... But i do want the same model saw. Its very easy to start, cuts great, plenty of size and power for anything i need. I like it.

I have the Husqy limbing saw - the smallest pro model, XP-something. Lurve it. But also haven't loved it actively in awhile now, and it's going to need all the cleanings.

I need totp do some Xmas shopping.....I haven't even started yet. I pretty much only need to shop for Misti and my parents. Still wish I would have started a month or two ago. I have ideas, so that's a start.

Also, it's been below zero here for days. I get to go fishing soon!! Was gonna try tomorrow, but I was advised by a friend of mine that is a guide, that I should wait a few more days before I venture out on the ice. Maybe Thursday then.

Nice. People have been reporting 9+ inches on the lakes 'round here already. This is day seven of a crazy cold snap; last nights low was -37C with the wind chill. Today's high is supposed to be -21C. Not even my husky wants to spend more than 10 mins outside these days. Supposed to last another week. Fishing starts up whenever the temp reaches a more humane level. Plus I picked up a used power auger for a good price a few weeks ago (no more relying on my buddies) that's been calling my name...
