Can't believe I've never seen this thread. I haven't read more than a page yet....

I drink my coffee black. My favorite comes from Greenwell farms, on Big Island, HI. I prefer their Private Reserve and Peaberry types.

Yeah! I haven't met a Peaberry yet that I didn't love.

Yerba Mate does have a grassy taste.... I grew to like it after a few months though. Especially if you put some honey in with the water when you are moisten the tea.

Now that you guys mention.. it does! I really like grassy/hay flavors and smells, also if this stuff has all of the purported health properties then I think it's worth drinking. I found this:

Aqueous extracts of the leaves of Ardisia compressa (AC) have been used in folk medicine to treat various liver disorders including liver cancer. The objective of this study was to partially characterize and determine the total polyphenol content, antioxidant capacity, and quinone reductase activity of A. compressa tea in comparison to mate (Ilex paraguariensis, MT) and green (Camellia sinensis,GT) teas. Total polyphenol content, antioxidant capacity, and phase II enzyme induction capacity were measured by the modified Folin-Ciocalteu, ORAC, and quinone reductase (QR) assays, respectively. The major polyphenols in AC were not catechins. HPLC retention times and standard spikes of AC indicated the presence of gallic acid, epicatechin gallate, ardisin and kaempferol. Using catechin as standard, the total polyphenol value of AC (36.8 +/- 1.1 mg/mg DL) was significantly lower than GT (137.2 +/- 5.8 mg equivalent of (+)-catechin/mg dried leaves, DL) and MT (82.1 +/- 3.8 mg/mg DL) (P < 0.001). Antioxidant capacity (AC, 333; GT, 1346; MT, 1239 mmol Trolox equivalents/g DL) correlated with total polyphenol values (r(2) = 0.86, P < 0.01). AC (4.5-12.5 microg/mL) induced QR enzyme, in Hepa1c1c7 cells, up to 15%. MT and GT showed no induction at the concentrations tested (0.5-10.5 and 0.5-12.5 mg/mL, respectively). These results suggest that AC has a different mechanism of protection against cytotoxicity that is not related to its antioxidant capacity. Further studies are needed to determine such mechanisms and to explore its potential as a chemopreventive or therapeutic agent."

Seems to be quite accurate as far as not being far greater than Green Tea, I'm now interested in this "Ardisia compressa".

I can eat anything.....well, almost!

Surprisingly not bad! Just had to adjust the amount of grind used. No typical burnt flavors or harshness that you find when you buy a cup at the store.

I usually never buy a cup as Gregory's is near my job as well as Blue Bottle and Counter Culture. Gregory's is local so I usually prefer that though. .
 
I was gifted a bag of Starbucks Kenya. It is a medium roast. Not bad at all! My favorite from them is Pike's Place.
 
The Yukon has a straight peanut and caramel flavor across the board ironically if it had a touch more char notes to cut the sweet overtones it would be pretty stellar. Not bad though.

That's really interesting, Starbucks isn't usually big on the light roast profile. Weird question, would you mind posting a picture of the unground and then ground beans sometime? I'd love to check out the color and patterning.

Will do! My realtor is showing my house right now so I got kicked out for an hour.

I'm doing a straight 12 cup drip with 7 tablespoons of coffee. I would try a pour over but a lot of my stuff is packed away right now as we are trying to move.

Whenever I do a medium roast Starbucks bc I'm too lazy to get Gregory's or whatever is the case that the proportion I use. But I'll take some photos. They definitely roasted it a bit too dark but strangely that burnt flavor only comes out if you abide by their 1 tblsp to 1 cup of brew proportion.
Have you tried their coffee? I was thinking of checking them out since they offer a free sample if you sign up for their subscription.
Yes it's not my favorite though. It's an extremely bright, fruity, and slightly watery. I do enjoy a bit of darkness in my coffees which Blue Bottle is devoid of. You can shoot down their espresso with ease (really good espresso)!

Gregory's house blend in NYC is my favorite bar none at about $13 a pound. I like it over any roaster in NYC and over any single origin. I quite often cheat and will blend in one coffee with another even though it might be verboten to some if I'm not in the mood for a lighter roast.

I sent Wayne and John some Gregory's Dark Vision Espresso roast a few years ago and I just sent Codger64 on the forum last week some of the house blend.

Their proportions are way off the beans are not drinkable at the potency they suggest and ends up tasting like the burnt cups of coffee you get at the stores.
 
It's certainly light for Starbucks, the amount of oil on the outside of the bean is strange though, I'm not sure what would cause that, unless it's been sitting for a while.

Haha I'll again ask for a picture of the beans. It may be what's considered a"Cinnamon" roast. If that's the case it's lighter than a light roast, and will not have anything close to a normal coffee flavor. It'll almost be like floral peanut butter.

Not quite, it's fruity, almost sour, the acid is very upfront, very close to a regular can of chock full o nuts or cafe Bustelo if you left out a scoop or two in your perk.
