If I recall SK-5 is a "proprietary" Cold Steel steel name, correct. Does that not mean it can be anything at any time?
No. SK-5 is a known and fairly common grade of simple, high carbon steel. Essentially a Japanese version of 1080.
ETA: you may have been thinking of "Carbon-V". Which was almost certainly 0170-6 the whole time, but about which arguments and controversy rage unabated to this day... despite and/or regardless of any evidence.
