Cold Steel Chaos has arrived

Gentlemen, keep in mind that although this is General Knife Discussion, which is exactly the right place to discuss our enthusiasm for our new knives, we do have members whose great joy in life seems to be to rain on someone else's parade. Technically, they are TROLLS. Really, really clever trolls who push just hard enough to be obnoxious and disruptive, but not so the mods decide this is the day we have had enough of them.

Read through the thread and you may see who is most responsible for the negativity.

This guy, OP, got a new knife. He likes the knife, its something he was looking for. Its something he connects with. What's wrong with that? Isn't that what we're here for?

Not really. The best part of this forum to me these days is the huge archive. Information, ideas, hands on experience and great explanations and pictures abound. Really, really, good stuff.

Now the herd/pile on mentality is strong. Not too much independent thinking going on, and once the collective has made a decision, others fall in right away on a subject. It can be on any aspect of a knife, and they will make sure you know their opinion even if you didn't ask for it.

Example of this:

Q: "I have had problems with my Rat 1 locking up tight, and now the scales are a bit slick. Can anyone help me figure out how to fix it?"

A: "Sure, buy a Sebbie and forget about it". Then folks start to post about how much they like their Sebenzas.

Certainly, it would be goo to have the kind of scratch to replace a $30 knife with an $800 knife but not all of us can do that.

And at the subforum I hang out at the most here, there is all kinds of snobbery about where a knife is made, who makes it, and what kind of steel the knife uses. These guys are collectors, not users, and their 20 year old knives look as good as new. But when you bring up a certain material for blade or scale, the alarm bells go off and they all tell you that you need to purchase their favorite steel.

If you post a knife that isn't on the accepted list but still you purchased and are pretty happy with it, undoubtedly you will get a quick "I had that knife and traded it off", or "gave it to my brother in law." But if it lines up with the group mentality, a knife purchased from a certain manufacturer could bring pages of posts, even though it is simply the same knife that has been posted dozens of times before. It's all about the herd... what do they like?

Yeah, cold steel isn't a premium cool knowledgeable knife guy brand. But they make knives that work. Does a knife enthusiast have to be put down because his knife is worth a tenth of what you paid for yours?

I was goofing on YouTube about a month ago and ran into a knife maker that posts regularly here that had reviewed the Cold Steel. The review was great, even handed, and seemed like there was some time invested in it. Oddly enough, he said there was no announcement here and no attempt by him to show the video. His major concern? He didn't want to listen to all the complaining about Cold Steel. How sad is that? He knew that his review would get so much negative play that he just left out of Bladeforums completely. And this guy is a well respected maker here on this forum!

I bought the American Lawman after watching his and other videos, and I have to say he was spot on. The knife is not only extremely well built, it is solid as a brick, lightweight, and all the stuff they do to the steel does indeed make a difference. It is an excellent buy. But I would have never known about that knife if I hadn't left this forum to look around. Years of reading this forum, and there are only handful or two of favorable reviews on Cold Steel. Regardless of the knife model, CS is a lightening rod for derogatory commentary. To me, that is kind of sad, but what the heck. There are plenty of alternatives for just about every thing these days, including this forum!

midnight flyer, wait and see. We have a Cold Steel forum now, with a responsive moderator. CS fans have a place to talk without the trolls taking over.

It is never going to be easy with so many personality types, but we don't have to accept stupid as the standard.

get on my level

Wow. This is the kind of thread that is making be not want to come onto bladeforums anymore. I'm so sick of ridiculous fan boys and bashing of anything that's not cool/trendy. Yeah, collecting is cool. I love pics of huge collections. And yeah, ridiculous expensive knives can be cool for lots of reasons. But it gets to a point of pure obsession.

Does a knife enthusiast have to be put down because his knife is worth a tenth of what you paid for yours? Would the extra 500 ish dollars be worth the increase in quality to a soldier who this knife was designed for (I am not sure, I'm not a soldier)?

To the OP: congratulations man! Its not my style of knife, but I get how you feel and am glad you're liking it.

Finally, I'm not putting any knife, brand, maker, community, or forum user. Like what you like and let others like what they like.

Conglatulation to OP:thumbup: just too much haters around here. I'm purchased Busse's AALB and to be honest I don't think it look any less mall ninja than this one.... In fact, 66$ fantasy blade should be much more practical than the 600$:barf:

That thing is just as much a wall hanger as the Busse. Both cool for what they are even if it is impractical. What ever happened to courtesy and good will guys?

I got the same kind of reply when posting about the extra large polished espada.

There are trolls everywhere but from my experience, this forum doesn't put up with them as much as others. I've met more good people here than I ever could have dreamed of.

And let me make sure I'm getting this right; if Busse makes this knife it is an homage but if CS makes one it's mall ninjery at its best. Oh the humanity!

i have my own reason for not buying CS knives, but hey, if the op is happy with his new knife then more power to him.
that's what collecting is all about right?...buying the stuff that floats your boat?

Looks cool to me. An affordable toy that let's you get the feel of the real deal.
Practical? No. Neither is a Katana, but tons of people collect them bothe cheap repro's and antiques. I doibt those guys will ever have to battle the neighboring Shogun's boys, but they get no grief from trolls.

I think it looks ugly and have no use for it whatsoever, but good job CS on putting out an inexpensive knife in this style that isn't a total piece of garbage. Just REALLY not for me.

The blade shape I like, but the handle with that guard is so ugly. But I've never been of fan of hand guards that seem like they are meant to be some take on brass knuckles. Like the sheath but i've always liked cold steel sheath, they just are functional and durable.

. But I've never been of fan of hand guards that seem like they are meant to be some take on brass knuckles. .

It doesn't just "seem" like it's meant to be a take on brass knuckles, it IS meant to be a take on brass knuckles. The original trench knives this is based on had a knuckle guard that was intended to be used offensively:

I actually wish the CS design looked more like the Mark 1, but oh well.

I love this knife design just because of all the buttfrustration it is causing CS-haters and other knife snobs!

Cool trench knife. I do not like cold steel but its a free country and you can like who you chose.

There is no way I would buy a Bussee. This knife is for messing with while watching TV and has no real world meaning so why pay a lot of money for a fun nick nack. Fact is Bussee is to expensive in most all areas. I like Bussee and at a knife show I hung out at their table for a little while and messed with a bunch of their knives but most all of their knives I can find an equal to at a much better price. They produce a custom knife in a production setting yet charge custom prices.

I once had a set of brass nuckles, I walked up to a telephone pole and punched it hard. It cut then palm of my hand bad. Try it once and you will see what I mean.

Cool knife, have fun.

I own a lot of knucks and I can tell you a well designed knuck that fits your mitten well will not hurt your hands (much) even if punching against a hard unyielding surface with great force. I sometimes paracord wrap my knucks to enable harder punches as well.

Nice fixed blade, I'd so like one for my collection. Would love to know if the blade tang goes all the way to the back of the handle or not.
