Cold Steel Cinquedea

I love cinquedeas and was so psyched when I heard CS was going to make one, only to be disappointed by the route they chose to go with it. They went with a "regular sword" hilt instead of the stylistically distinct route with the cap-style pommel. Also, I wish it was bigger.

Agreed 100%

 That thing would be like stabbing somebody with a shovel! Looks like a very short, very serious sword to me.

A status symbol, impractical sword, with a blade designed only for large engravings that lacks engraving. No thank you.

They were used mostly as a thrusting weapon on unarmored targets for opening up a massive wound channel. They were a specialized weapon, not an impractical one. Intended for use in a civilian, rather than battlefield, context.

Not sure why this is getting so much h8.

I can't believe people actually like and buy crap like this.

Boy why you gotta be so ignint?? Some people like historical blades, and this is a good opportunity to buy a Chinquedea. It's pretty rude to come in and say something like that. If it doesn't float your boat, who gives a damn? You know my parents taught me that if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all. Some people must have not had good parenting hmmm... maybe why they're so rude. Get out of here problem child!

You can't really expect that every single post made in reply is going match or exceed your own enthusiasm for the item you are discussing do you? Dissenting opinions that are well stated do not equal trolling or hate. Now, if some level of maturity and civility is not maintained regardless is going to have bigger problems to worry about than a random comment.

So you think "I can't believe people actually like and buy crap like this." Is well stated? And what kind of "bigger problems" are you talking about??

Forget you man. I don't need u h8ing up on me.

When the English banned the Irish from carrying their beloved shillelaghs, the 2 foot club became a 3 foot walking stick and was legal to carry out on the town again. When the Italians banned swords above a certain length, you could carry a big dagger or the newly-minted cinqueda. It's less about the wound channel and more about the mass. Even fullered, a cinqueda could take a blow from a sword since even in ye olde days the bad guys had a tendency to, you know, not obey the law. I tried blocking a bokken with an arnis stick and got knocked on my butt, and I would have been served much better by something like a cinqueda. It's a bit silly to assume that the 5-finger width is going to make much of a difference in wound survival when to get that far would mean having 12-16 inches of steel already through the victim. The cinqueda is a legal way to get as much weapon as you could under the rules of the day, much the same way that folks buy AR parts and assemble them themselves. Plus, they rank pretty high on the man-jewelry scale, too....

I think it's pretty dope. I can't drop $200 CAD on a dagger right now, but man do I want one once I've got my career going...

Holy cow. Do you not realize he's a Mod?

He's a total h8r too. If he bans me, he bans me. But he won't defeat my spirit or my soul.

And yes, I'm going to buy the Cold Steel Chinquedea. If I get flack from that, it'll just bounce off. Go ahead Mr. Cool Guy, Mr. Big Balls, ban me. I couldn't care less. It's pretty obvious SOME members of this community are corrupt and mean. Just because he is a power hungry mod, doesn't mean I'll shrink back in fear.

How about some video proof of your wrongness.

Lindy makes a lot of ridiculous assertions, such as "if it was any good, why wasn't it used in battle?" Because it was intended for a totally different context of use. And if you've ever pierced flesh with a sharp blade it's almost stupid how easily the blade will slide through, so it wouldn't take much effort to drive it right to the hilt. Most arms and armor scholars consider it a cut-and-thrust design with the emphasis on thrusting, much like a gladius. It was sort of the Smatchet of its day.

+1

I like Lindybeige, but I think he missed the mark in that video. I'm pretty sure a properly sharpened Chinquedea would be very lethal if used properly, as a thrusting weapon.

Oh boy...

I think you may have overreacted just a bit.

Actually, that's just video proof that "Lindybeige" doesn't know what he's talking about, much like you didn't. But again, 42 already covered that, so there you go.

Rev is about as nice a guy as you would ever want to meet, he is neither power hungry or corrupt. If someone doesn't agree with you it doesn't mean they are trolls or haters and instantly calling them that is immature. Not to mention that insulting a moderator with no reason is a less than bright way to act.

Exactly. People don't use Glock 26's or Ruger LCP/LCR's or other subcompact pistols in battle either, but that doesn't stop them from being effective self defense weapons.

So faced with a sword duel to the death, you would choose this particular weapon? No, of course not. I doubt it would be in any rational persons top 50. Is it a interesting piece of history? Well, to each their own.
