Cold Steel Cinquedea

Sorry if I came off as a dick. I was just caught off guard at how RUDE Tantrik was being.

I didn't mean to be an asshole. Just wanted some opinions on this.

So faced with a sword duel to the death, you would choose this particular weapon? No, of course not. I doubt it would be in any rational persons top 50. Is it a interesting piece of history? Well, to each their own.

Not in a duel, no, because it's not a dueling weapon. Would I pick it if the environment I lived or worked in (in a historical setting) had a high rate of violent crime? Yes. It's more convenient to carry than a full sword, but "outguns" daggers, and remains maneuverable in tight spaces such as indoors or in narrow urban streets. Context dictates appropriate weapon choice.

Tobias Capwell the curator of the Wallace collection called it the predecessor of the rapier, of course it's a dueling weapon.

The rapier was not a dueling weapon. Any weapon may be used for dueling, but weapons optimized for use in the context of a duel are dueling weapons. There were such thing as military rapiers, and they were also a civilian defensive weapon.

The rapier was not a dueling weapon? What? That's ridiculous. It is the dueling weapon.

It would be neat to see what one of these could do to a fresh pig carcass. Seems like it would leave a nasty wide wound, even with a relatively shallow thrust.

Simply because a weapon may be used in a duel does not make it expressly a dueling weapon. There may have been duels fought with rapiers, and even rapiers made specifically for dueling purposes, but the sword class in general was not specifically intended for dueling purposes.

There was once a duel fought in hot air balloons with blunderbusses (it occurred in 1808--have a look) but that does not make the blunderbuss a dueling weapon nor the hot air balloon a dueling vehicle. They are articles being employed outside their intended context for the purposes of a duel.

Regarding your above-linked Matt Easton video, here's a more thorough video that runs counter to your argument.

Holy cow. Do you not realize he's a Mod?
I agree with Cooldill to an extent. The post he was responding to was trolling plain and simple. No matter what anyone likes, someone could always call it crap. But it detracts, rather than contributes to a thread. A mod should see this...

I'm posting this just for the halibut. Bill Moran made some Chinquedeas. IIRC, his was patterned after one in a museum

From what I have learned the Cinquedea was intended mostly as a weapon to be carried in town. It was smaller than a full size sword but still much more than a dagger. I would imagine whomever designed the first one, either was in a fight or saw one where someone had to use only a dagger against a sword. Also many pieces of such social weaponry was carried more for fashion than intended use. A full size sword can be cumbersome and downright rude when carried in a crowd. Also it runs into limitations of being possibly too big to be useful in a narrow hall or amongst a crowd. The few I have handled were very capable weapons with weight closely matching longer bladed weapons. While I think I would have prefered a more traditional style handle, I look forward to seeing the Cold Steel version if one crosses my path.

Kind of neat I suppose, as perhaps a wall-hanger. But if I were to buy a wall-hanger, it wouldn't say Cold Steel on it, it'd be something that looks the period. With that being said, your M1911 should be your backup to your shotgun or rifle. Knives + self defense shouldn't really be a consideration, IMO. Way, way down the priority list at the very least.

Don't get me wrong. I don't disagree that Tantrik's post was rude. I was responding to the original version of Cooldill's post, which included some rather strong language directed at RevDevil following his post. Cooldill edited that part a while later.

I missed all that.

How about some video proof of your wrongness.

The video basically says this was an older version of the Sebenza, "very practical" but also mainly used to show off. :D

Yeah sorry for flipping out guys, I just felt slighted by an earlier insult so felt quite snappy. It won't happen again.

Does anyone know of any cutting tests done with a cinquedea? It would be very interesting to know how a blade such as this performs.
