Cold Steel= flat out liars

Generally, the steels are fairly standard industry wise, usually. There are some models in 420 stainless which are a bit on the soft side, but the Carbon V and AUS and VG steels would compare well to most blades. They have a lot of well respected designs like the Bush Ranger, Master Hunter, etc. .

I think some of the CS knives are great. There are many I don't like at all. If I could get past my dislike for Lynn Thompson I might think of purchasing one.

I realize there is a search function, but it's not working on my end, I've tried for the past 3 days.
Read this, from the Bladeforums.com Service & Support forum:

Sticky: Search Engine FAQs & Tips
Quiet Storm

Some items are harder to search for, because the terms needed to search on are too common. Here's a few I found using "Lynn Thompson" instead of "Cold Steel":

So what's the beef with Cold Steel?
New cold steel stuff
No Flames here, just real CS love
Some hearsay about coldsteel
Why does everyone hate coldsteel?

Ok, I read those. Let's see if my reading comprehension is any good.

1. people don't like cold steel because Lynn stole the wave feature.
2. people don't like the marketing hype
3. people feel there materials are substandard

I have a feeling then that the cold steel video I just watched is misleading and that any quality knife can do the same things that are done to cold steel knives in the video.

Many Cold Steel knives use perfectly good materials. Many of us like their knives and have bought them for years. The videos are advertising, not scientific tests. Would you buy a used car off a TV ad? :D

Cold Steel is a design and marketing company and does not manufacture anything. Carbon V knives are made in USA, probably by Camillus, and are pretty good. AUS-8 knives are made in Japan and are also generally pretty good. The rest are off my radar screen. :)

Some people get so deeply into the knife companies and the personalities involved that they make decisions based on these other factors, not the knives themselves.

Few companies offer the range of impact weapons, and bladed weapons other than knives, that you can find at Cold Steel.

I may be mistaken, but if I interpreted what Sal from Spyderco said about their lock strength correctly (if I am mistaken I apologize), their MBC rated locking mechs ie manix, and chinook, are rated for 200lbs per inch of handle or blade length ( I can't remember which). That would make the manix lock able to hold up to 700 inch pounds which is at least equal to anything hung off any of those cold steel locks. (700 lbs at one inch from lock, 350lbs at two inches from lock, 175lbs at four inches from lock, etc) I could be completely wrong in this, and if I am than I apologize (although if I am mistaken, I believe that my error would be towards portraying them as weaker than they actually are). That being said, Lynn Thompson is funny to watch, but I do have several cold steel blades that I love, and I will purchase more in the future.

I just watched the latest, greatest CS DVD infomercial, Solid Proof. Is it misleading? They don't state that only Cold Steel will do all that they demonstrate. I think you can duplicate anything there with any quality knife. My work beater can cut leather, rubber boots, sandals, rubber hose, zip ties, chicken wire, etc. I'll bet yours can too. I don't dislike Cold Steel, just not my style. I think the DVD is entertaining and fun to watch, I wish other knife companies would do the same.

They've got a new DVD? I've got to get it! The one I have is hilarious.
I have a Voyager 3 inch clip point that I like. Got a really good deal on it.

Although I was semi disappointed when I found out that my Recon Scout wasn't the strongest and sharpest knife in the universe, I'm still very happy with it. I'm also rather impressed with Thompson's aim with the throwing weapons and blowgun. But then again, I really have no other reference to compare it to:confused:

Thompson may be an idiot as some claim, but I wouldn't want to tangle with him in a knife fight. Come to think of it, I wouldn't want to tangle with anybody in a knife fight, especially him.

It all depends on your needs. I find few knives I like better than my Benchmade Ascent with 4-inch blade; however, while that blade is a real cutter, the frame isn't going to be as strong as a heavier knife. The Night Force and Pro-Lites are good knives; I love their Voyagers and Vaqueros. I also love CRKT's Desert Cruiser knife as a heavy duty.

I think I've said this several times already. But I'll say it again because I'm hoping that someone at Spyderco or Benchmade is listening. I like five inch and six inch blades. They're legal here in Washington. Cold Steel makes folders in those sizes, so I usually can be found carrying a Cold Steel knife. I would love to be able to buy a Manix, or a Chinook, or an Endura with that blade length. Is anybody listening at Spyderco listening? Hello? *sigh*

Your used car analogy is flawed in that if I see an add wherein the car maker says look buy this car and you can jump a 40ft chasm and run over industrial medians with ease then that is what I should expect. However if one does the things that the ad guys in the CS video do then CS turns around and accuses you of abusing your blade and voids your warranty. I think there knives are better than say Smith and Wesson but imho no where near BM or Spyderco.

Now hold on a minute. You realize that if you race your sports car, it voids your warranty in most cases. Isn't that what a car that can do 180 mph is for? I mean you can't do 180 mph anywhere in the U.S. on a public road. So you take your car to the track and it's no warranty. That means you can't get your car above 75 mph and still have a warranty. How is that any different than Cold Steel?

I will plead "guilty" to watching the "More Proof" video and finding it entertaining. The new DVD however is simply terrible.

CS makes some pretty good designs, I own several and enjoy using them. There are also some of the CS blade designs that no other manufacterers make, the Desperado line and the Vaquero line are worthwhile. The walking stick selection is good as well.

CS has had numerous spectacular failures that litter this forum. There is a reason for that, some of there products are poorly designed.

Try looking at the "My Cold Steel Trailmaster broke" thread from 2005 to see what happened. A google search for "Bladeforums Trailmaster Failed" will give you the thread in question.
