Cold Steel= flat out liars

Although Lynn makes appearances in the vid the I have, he isn't the guy who does most of the cutting. The big dude has a name, and I knew it at one time, but now it escapes me.

Can anyone post a picture of Lynn Thompson?

Lynn Thompson is the tubby gentleman on the cover of your DVD. He can be seen in the video cutting up water jugs in a parking lot (among other things).

Here's a picture of Mr. Thompson after dispatching a leopard in the African wilderness. He's on the left. Why didn't he just use one of his swords, or better yet, his deadly BROOKLYN SMASHER® to kill the beast?

Not to be confused with another Mr. Thompson...

the knife community would be so much better off if the general public didn't know that knives can cut through meat.

I only made it through the first twenty minutes of this DVD. It is far less entertaining than the previous one. Probably because there's not really anything new. I noticed a little bit of real, practical use of the folders, but it was mostly just new ways to cut meat. I really hope they had a bbq after they filmed that...

I used to be much more naïve about this sort of thing. I used to think, "Sure, it's ridiculous, but no one will take this seriously." Well, I was wrong. The WSJ article proved that. All this marketing, whether it sells knives or not, reinforces the image of knife users as insane vigilantes looking for heads to lop off. We can laugh at the sheeple all we want, but they are in the House and the Senate too. When CS marketing becomes an excuse for removing our rights, it all stops being funny. LT's attitude toward knives is obviously nothing like mine. Do I really want to buy from a man who destroys crates full of knives for a DVD? Do I really want to encourage this man to keep portraying the average knife user as a blood-thirsty lunatic? What kind of person am I really dealing with? I have come to this conclusion:

Lynn Thompson is the world's biggest mall ninja.

That was very well put. I agree 100%

This really hurts the knife community in general. This is becoming a serious issue.

"Keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you're ready to fire!"

"Now THAT'S funny!"

Indeed - I about wet my pants when I read that :D

I've got to steal that one too

I bought a bunch of stuff from CS in the past. I started to shy away in recent years - have gone with some different brands & different steels. However, with the introduction of the Trailmaster, SRK & Tanto knives, CS was the first to have a really good rubber handle. And to show the results of torture tests. These were both very good things IMO...

It has gone too far now & I tend to agree with Martini to a large degree though. Especially in light of the whole booger finger thing (love that dude :D ). OTOH, is it really Lynn's fault that some sensationalist, agenda driven POS alleged "journalist" none of us would piss on if he were on fire starts targeting knives? Nay. It is not. It is the POS's fault. And that of his employers at the happy faced fun enforcer machine.

We, as a community, should keep things like 'meat wrapped in denim cutting tests' as low key as possible so as not to frighten the sheep. However, we very much have a right to discuss these things. And to carry our damn pocket knives. And *gasp* to defend ourselves with said pocket knives, or whatever comes to hand, if we have to.

The larger issue, IMO, is why this drivel that passes for reporting is allowed to go on unchecked. What will it be next? Martial Arts & Combatives training?

Punish the knife company? Perhaps I'll take my business to a more low key brand. However, I fear this reaction might be like cutting off my nose to spite my face. So I might just be better served to write LT a letter about his marketing practices.

So who owns the WSJ? What else do they own? ;)

I love Cold Steel knives, although they are a bit pricey. I am not really sure how the video will affect political views of knives, but they can't do too much more to keep us from being able to carry knives. I own three CS's myself and am waiting for the Tru-flight thrower to come back in-stock at SMKW. There video's are repetitive but they are on the rite path.

Um...Have you seen the knife regulations in the UK, Australia, and some of the less-than-tollerant knife places here in the US?!? Your statement seems a bit more than ill-considered.

I guess you didn't see or hear about the recent Wall Street Journal article.

I just ordered one of thier free DVDs. I saw a preview of it and it looks good.
They could have done some better "tests" but form what I saw it looked good.

while reading through this thread, there were many references to the messed up sheeple journalists...aren't there any proper joirnalists out there that are writing counter articles of some sort? it seems as though 'real' journalists are hard to come by...is there no knife lover that will get himself into journalism in such a way that he can take away some of the power of the sheeple journalists.

i don't think that there are any people that are able to do this though...so i guess it will just have to wait.

The dvd kinda sucked to me and was nothing more than a physics class about energy and motion and what they can do. If they want to show off they need comparable samples of sog, ka-bar, busse, becker, spyderco, benchmade and other brands and go head to head with there products all with honest results. That being said I am addicted to trail master bowies and cant get enough of them.

Does anyone remember R.Davies from "Second Chance Body Armor" (Central Lake MI.)? He made a video some 25 years ago where him and some associates shot at their Bullet Proof Vest while they were wearing them, as well as stabbed & slashed BP Vest with Beef & Pork Ribs inside them. This is not a new thing, just a different crazy kinda selling tactic. Heck they even discharged pistols into their BP Holsters on video.... LMAO!!!!

The more you guys bring up your opinions about LT the more free publicity you give him. It's like yelling "Don't look at the train wreck!" to people who did not even know that the wreck occurred. If I based my purchasing habits on ads and not quality and price I would not buy much of anything. If you are really convinced that CS marketing techniques are detrimental to knife ownership then perhaps you should contact LT and let him know. Or at least send him the link here to take a look. He is out to make money like any other enterprise. He will continue to use any marketing ploy that achieves those goals until sales drop. If he has numerous complaints about the video and does nothing then he will show what a true :jerkit: he may be.

Well, looking at the picture of him pointing a gun at the man next to him with his finger on the trigger and a stupid smile on his face, I can't say id expect anything else out of him....Hes even kneeling next to a leopard, which he probably shot for the same kind of enjoyment he gets from cutting denim-clothed meat....makes him feel like hes something more than an insecure, overweight, jackoff....People have a bad enough view of knives. I mean, I took out one of mine to open up a kids christmas present and one of my family members had a stroke. They actually took the present from me and then told the kid that knives are bad and hurt people. Granted, the tigerstriped sog may have looked excessive for the time, but it does the same thing as ANY OTHER KNIFE I OWN. I thought it was funny watching them struggling to break into everything with their hands the rest of the night.....These videos are not going to make that kind of thing better, and for me personally, they're bad enough allready. People in general are generally relatively easily swayed in one direction or another. On the grand scale, id also say that most dont know much about knives. With these videos all over the place, some peoples only "knowledge" of knives will be that they're weapons...which, needless to say, isnt good....its all really ridiculous. Knives (or guns for that matter) dont hurt anyone...people, however, do. I guess its easier to push mankinds faults off on inanimate objects.

I am of the mind that people are afraid of things they dont understand completely, and so, I think that if people had a better education on knives and/or guns things might be better. The problem is that a lot of people arent ever exposed to them in the right way. Other than on this forum, I havent ever read anything supportive of our views on things. Just about all the stuff I have read (meaning in the news, magazines, etc) either gives the wrong idea or completely bashes knives....these videos arent doing any good. There needs to be some more wide-spread positive media. Yeah, its advertisement, and it apparently works (though thats half the scary part) but that doesnt mean its right or that we should all like it. They make decent knives (some of them at least) but to me, it doesnt make up for their sketchy ethics and the fact that their stupid advertisement is contributing to the allready rather negative outlook on things I use every day (as tools, mind you) and enjoy very much. Unfortunately theres not much of anything that can be done about it..

Yeah God forbid that some guy will do something diffrent in an add then the same old "This is a utility blade, that will cut apples string and other boring stuff"
GET BACK IN THE FOLD AND DON'T DO DIFFREND STUFF, DO WHAT EVERY BODY ELSE DOES!!!
