Cold Steel GI Tanto Video Destruction Test Completed

yerscattergun : I don't know about a internet legend....Maybe though :D in a strange Twilight Zone kind of way.

He does look ridiculous doesn't he ?

The Becker was the worst of all the knives so far it is just to brittle to take a lot
of punishment. It chipped out immediately on the concrete and broke in half with a few more swings. Once they chip sudden death is near.

noss4 -thanks for the detailed review!

To those with the short CM sheath - will the GI Tanto fit this sheath without taking out the retention screw, or does the screw hit the blade?

Just 550'd the handle. Looks much better, did it ala strider. Just pay attention to what way the loops go and pull them tight, oh yah , use alot of cord, I needed alot , about 10' then trimmed the extra. Better to have more than not enough.
I was thinking about making a kydex sheath from a kit. The knifekits.com kits are cheap and it looks like fun.
noss4 is a legend to me. Looking forward to more torture tests. I'm shocked that by now cold steel hasn't contacted knifetests for permission to use footage for thier "proof" or at least a link. Anyone email cold steel?

Yep, noss4 shure doesn't &$%# around with those tests. They convinced me to buy a G.I. Tanto (and a War Head...I just couldn't resist ;) ). Somehow, I don't see much chance of Cold Steel using "outside" footage in their DVD's, regardless of how complimentary it may be. You never know, though.;)

I didn't know they had brought back the War Head. I have one the last versions they sold years ago. Glad to see it back. Great test noss. Really helpful. Your providing a great service for us all.
Terry

wingchun74: Thanks for the address to knifekits.com I have never seen it before
It does look like fun. Very cool. I recommend to everyone re warping the handle since Cold Steel could have done it better but didn't.

G. Scott H.: I agree Cold Steel isn't going to use outside footage for their DVDs
wingchun74: Thanks for the thought though.

tsf: Your welcome :) I have more coming up soon.

Sounds great, got any pics? :D

Yep, I wanna see pics, too. Mine just came in yesterday, and it's pretty damn cool (the coolest knife I've seen at this price). I don't really like the factory wrap style either, but at least it's very tight (at least on mine).

Just waiting on the War Head, now...;)

G. Scott H. Great.. I'm glade you like it. The Cord wrap was tight on mine also
but it just isn't secured very well to the tang. Do you plan on re wrapping it ?
Thanks for sharing your photos. :)

Hey, noss! Yep, I'm thinking of rewrapping in the "Strider" style as soon as this one loosens up enough to warrant a change. Until then, I just wanna see how long it'll hold up under normal use.

I was thinking of doing one with black linen micarta scales, too. I have a big sheet of it left over from an abandoned previous project. Which reminds me, I've been looking at the tang area under the wrap, and there are those "humps" on either side, like a ridge running down the center of each side. What can you tell me about those, since you've seen the knife without its wrap? It looks like I could file those down as flush as possible, then use some epoxy to fill in any left over uneven areas before I put on the scales. Any thoughts?

G. Scott H.: The ridges you are seeing is just the para cord. It runs down the length of the tang on both sides and is covered with a piece of leather.
The tang is flat on both sides. There is no need to file anything down. You should be able to put any type of handle material on it with no problems.

D'oh!:D Thanks, man. The way it's finished, it looks metallic (the leather, that is), so it had me scratchin' my head. Sort of a :jerkit: moment on my part. :p Thanks again.

What's the purpose of the recess between the blade and the handle? A really un-ergonomic choil?

noss4, love videos! Cant wait for the GLOCK field knife test! Do you think you will do one on the airforce survival knife??

G. Scott H.: No problem.. Post some photos if you redo the handle.

boing: Basically you got it. The GI Tanto nor the Strider BT is ergonomic to say the least on this issue but they are both capable of performing extreme tasks when called upon.

fdd19: Are you referring to the new AFSK the Ontario ASEK ? or the old one ?

Sorry guys, I can't post pics. The only computer I have access to is at work.

It's fairly simple to wrap the handle. First go to striders page and get the directions. The strider has holes in different spots than the cold steel so you'll have to figure out a way to secure the paracord.

I started by taking off the paracord and black material, I think it was leather. I left the double sided tape on to help hold the base paracord.

I then took abot 5' of paracord and took the inside strands out. I wrapped the handle to form a base layer. With the inside of the cord out it lays nice and flat against the tang.

Next step works best as mentioned earlier with a vice. It's a pain in the butt to hold on to and wrap it tight. Just follow the directions from strider, I put about ten turns on each side. The cool thing about paracord is that you can melt your knots so they won't come undone. I used about 6' more paracord, with the guts left intact.

Mine looks more or less like the strider handle, a couple knote off center. Feels much better, very tight.

sorry should have been clear on that - The classic Ontario Knife Co. model 499 Airforce Survival Knife

edit: if its not too much to ask noss4, take a look at this topic http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=480675

fdd19: Yes I will test this knife I can get it fairly cheap. I need to get caught up
on my current tests first.

I looked at your thread. Yes I want to test a Dark ops everyone around here hates these knives because of the advertising thing and extreme ratio thing.
I'm not going to condemn any knife I have not tried myself. I would love to see what one can do. They aren't cheap. I have to wait a while on it.

Looks like some crazy ammo. I have never seen it before. I wounder.

oh i only put the ammo on because of how similiar its images and writing and overal style was to the dork ops stuff, but yeah they make frangible ammo which is legitimate (turns to dust on anything that is flesh). Take all the time you need to pay for one of those knives (at 200 bux i dont blame you) ill search around and see if i can find em for nice and cheap(er)

edit - best , so far

http://www.knifesite.com/Dark-Ops-Knives-s/50.htm

i believe the interceptor is the most ridiculous knife by far they make

interesting, aramid composite handle.... (aramids are used in bullet proof vests)
